Johnny Neel Late Night Breakfast CD (2000)
Frankly Basie: Count Basie Plays The Hits Of Frank Sinatra buy CD music Break out the napkins, or you'll get real messy. Here comes Johnny Neel with Late Night Breakfast! And, bring those napkins on down to the Grand Emporium on April 28th to hear this phenomenon live, presented by Dark Horse Productions and with special MC guest Tom "Trashmouth" Baker!
As I was writing this review on New Year's Day, I wondered if it was too early to start my "Top 10 of 2001" CD list. Regardless of Father Time, what is true is true, and what is hip is hip. Not only is Johnny Neel and any recording he puts out first rate, he is one of the most talented musicians to walk the planet. He joins the ranks of multi-talented blind pianists/composers such as Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder - and he's every bit as creative and soulful.
Although not a household name, Johnny Neel is a Grammy award nominee recognized in the music world for his work with the Allman Brothers, Lonnie Mack and Gov't Mule, among others. In addition to his soulful vocals, harp, piano and B-3 proficiency, Johnny is an accomplished songwriter whose tunes have been recorded by the likes of the Allman Brothers, Joe Louis Walker, John Mayall, Irma Thomas, Ann Peebles, Marie Osmond, the Oak Ridge Boys and Travis Tritt.
Johnny Neel's proficiency is readily apparent on Late Night Breakfast. This CD has no missing ingredients from appetizer to dessert. "Full Tank of Love" comes boiling out at you like a runaway freight train. Added to Johnny Neel's freakishly good vocals, the female back-up singers add the spice and garnishment that make this opening entree sizzle. "Caught Me on My Blind Side" is another savory little number reminiscent of the songwriting in Storyville. "Murdered By Love" has got to be one of the best slow Blues songs to have been recorded in many a year. Former KC musicians Larry van Loon and Mike O'Neill were almost in tears after hearing the playback in the studio in Nashville.
They both had to go right out and order large helpings of biscuits and gravy just to make them calm down. And, "Late Night Breakfast" frequenters they are. This title cut adds the icing on the cake to an already scrumptious recipe of 12 tasty renditions.
Johnny Neel is the kind of talent who could literally sing the phone book and make it work. This guy can't go wrong. Those not familiar with Johnny Neel may remember his "White Christmas"-meets-Dixie-Chicken tune on KC's 1999 Heatin' Up the Holidays Hope House CD.
Not only is Late Night Breakfast a marvelous sonic experience, but with Tom Gieseke's masterful cover artwork and graphics throughout, it is a feast of the eyes. Too bad Johnny Neel can't see it, but the descriptions fed to him make it apparent this stands out from other Blues projects, early or late night.

Samir Joubran Tamaas CD (2003)
Frankly Basie: Count Basie Plays The Hits Of Frank Sinatra CD music Samir Joubran is the son of an oud maker and he has grown up to be a master of the instrument, as has his brother, who is a major part of this album. The fraternal communication they share is quite astonishing, making for some remarkable duet playing -- and they share the same spirit for inhabiting moods on this disc. As Palestinians living in Italy, much of the disc seems infused with the somber sorrow of their people. There is plenty of room for improvisation, as can be found on the epic "Ramallah August 10." This isn't classical Arab music, by any means, with its traditional structures. Instead, despite the frequently solemn mood, there is a richly elegant beauty to Joubran's compositions that often catches fire in emotions, as on the title cut, and takes flight making it especially accessible to Western listeners for whom the strictures of the Arab classical form seem impenetrable. The music has plenty of room to breathe and flow here, and Joubran makes sure it does -- just listen to "Khalaas," for an example. The playing is as exquisite as the compositions, offering something truly gorgeous and the kind of thing to draw you in and capture you. ~ Chris Nickson

Muddy Waters Chicago Blues Masters Vol. 1 CD (1995)
Frankly Basie: Count Basie Plays The Hits Of Frank Sinatra CD music Digitally remastered by Larry Walsh (Capitol Recording Studios).
This album chronicles a 1959 Carnegie Hall bill shared between Muddy and Slim. In retrospect, it might be seen as something of a warm-up for Muddy, who would soon wow the world with the 1960 performance captured on his NEWPORT album. Muddy's style was much more primal and sensual than the more urbane, slightly Charles Brown-like sound of Peter Chatman (AKA Memphis Slim), but the two blues giants accompany each other here with sensitivity and taste. Slim dominates the proceedings, with 13 cuts to Muddy's four, and his sophisticated vocal and piano stylings are a joy to the ear. Conversely, Muddy's tunes lack the punch his customary sidemen gave them (he's backed by Al Hall and Shep Sheppard). Nevertheless, the singer was in his prime at this time, and it was seemingly impossible for him to come across as anything less than commanding. This disc is recommended chiefly to Memphis Slim fans, but it also provides an interesting (if brief) glimpse into Muddy's late-'50s live work.
Recorded in 1959 and 1961. Includes liner notes by Mark Humphrey.
This is part of The Capitol Blues Collection series.
Personnel includes: Muddy Waters (vocals, guitar); Memphis Slim (vocals, piano); James Cotton (harmonica); Otis Spann (piano); Al Hall (bass); Shep Sheppard, Francis Clay, Casey Jones (drums).

"O God, you have called us To ventures where we cannot see the end, By paths never yet taken, through perils unknown. Give us good courage, not knowing where we go, To know that your hand is leading us, Wherever we might go. Amen."
Kent Gustavson dedicated the service to Holden Village in 2002:
March 19, 2002
This setting of the Evening Prayer was written during the winter of 2000-2001 at Holden Village. I came to Holden in the fall of 2000 to strengthen my faith in God and in the world, and to process the time I spent in Palestine at the beginning of the 'Aqsa Intifada', listening to machine guns at night, and mourning the death of a close friend.
God certainly dwells among us, here in this beautiful valley; "His justice like a mountain our shadowed valley finds." I was immediately surrounded by love and pulled into the rhythms of life and work when I came to Holden. My fellow community members led me into valleys and to remote rivers and to the tops of mountains.
After a near-fatal car accident in the spring of 2001, when visiting my family on an 'out,' my friends here prayed for me and for my father, who was a prayer away from dying.
This is my home. You are my family. You sent me out with the prayer of good courage then, and you were with us in our time of need. Now, again, as I say goodbye to this valley, you will send me out with good courage.
I dedicate this Mountain Vespers to you, my family here at Holden Village.
I also dedicate this Evening Prayer to my father. God has given us the strength and courage to carry on with our journey.
God bless you all. May we all wake up each day and sing!
"Let us give ourselves and one another, commending our whole lives to love in God."

Joel Penner Church of the Little Black Dog CD (2005)
Frankly Basie: Count Basie Plays The Hits Of Frank Sinatra album for sale Joel Penner is a veteran musician who evidently makes his recording debut as a leader with this 2005 release for Sea Breeze. The trumpeter and flügelhornist leads a tight-knit group through a set mixing standards, jazz, and compositions arranged by Rick Hils. Penner opens with a spirited interpretation of "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To," while "Invitation" incorporates a funky backbeat with a touch of Latin percussion. Penner's mellow trumpet is featured to good effect in "Laura," while guitarist Doug MacDonald scored the lush setting of "My Funny Valentine," showcasing tenor saxophonist Michael Rose and the leader on flügelhorn. Unfortunately, Cengiz Yaltkaya's incongruous electric piano gives most of the session a rather dated feeling, something that could have been remedied by utilizing an acoustic instrument, while the slow to develop "Tombo in 7/4" doesn't fit in very well with the session as a whole. ~ Ken Dryden
Joel Penner: Doug MacDonald (guitar); Michael Rose (saxophone); Joel Penner (trumpet, flugelhorn); Bill Von Ravensberg (bass guitar); Steve Pemberton (drums); Cengiz Yaltkaya.
Personnel: Joel Penner (trumpet, flugelhorn); Michael Lee (saxophone); Cengiz Yaltkaya (piano); Steve Pemberton (drums); M.B. Gordy III (percussion).
