On this 1955 album, instead of performing a drum battle as they'd previously done on Jazz At The Philharmonic tours, the two virtuosos complement each other's playing, combining their efforts in a very musical album featuring trumpet greats Roy Eldridge and Dizzy Gillespie, tenor giants Flip Phillips and Illinois Jacquet, and a rhythm section consisting of Ray Brown and Herb Ellis. Rich shows off his facile abilities on "Buddy's Blues," and Krupa displays his fine stick work on "Gene's Blues."
Overall, KRUPA & RICH is a truly enjoyable listen, whose interest extends beyond the purely percussive. Rich's obituaries claim that this album was one of his three favorite records, and Krupa extols it as well, in Leonard Feather's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF JAZZ.
Recorded in New York on May 16 and November 1, 1955. Includes liner notes by Sid Gribetz.
This is part of Verve's Jazz At The Philharmonic series.
Personnel: Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich (drums); Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Eldridge, Thad Jones, Joe Newman (trumpet); Illinois Jacquet, Flip Phillips, Ben Webster, Frank Wess (tenor saxophone); Oscar Peterson (piano); Freddie Green, Herb Ellis (guitar); Ray Brown (bass).
Down Beat (3/95, p.46) - 4 Stars - Very Good - "...Rich plays brilliantly behind an all-star JATP combo in a lopsided 1955 battle with fellow-trappist Gene Krupa..." Gene Krupa Buddy Rich album
$12.35 Willie Dennis (trombone), John Bunch (piano) and Phil Leshin (bass).
Digitally remastered from the original stereo tapes by Kiyoshi Tokiwa (Nippon Phonogram). Includes liner notes by Jack Tracy.
This "battle of the bands" gives us the Buddy Rich Quintet in the left channel "versus" the Max Roach Quintet in the right channel.
Definitive battle of the drummers from 1959. CD has four bonus cuts. ~ Ron Wynn
The idea probably looked good on paper. Why not combine Buddy Rich's Quintet of 1959 (which consisted of altoist Phil Woods, trombonist Willie Dennis, pianist John Bunch and bassist Phil Leshin) with Max Roach's band of the time (consisting of trumpeter Tommy Turrentine, tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, trombonist Julian Priester and bassist ...
| | Gene Krupa Drum Battle CD (1985)
Gene Krupa Buddy Rich CD music
$7.79 This set was initially issued as the 15th instalment in Norman Grantz's Jazz at the Philharmonic series of LPs, EPs, and 45s. As that highly collectible compilation of performances has been out of print since the 1960s, many of the volumes were later issued under the respective artists' name. As the title would imply, Drum Battle: Jazz at the Philharmonic features the artistry of the Gene Krupa Trio with Buddy Rich (drums) sitting in on a few numbers as well as the inimitable jazz scat vocalizations of Ella Fitzgerald on a hot steppin' and definitive "Perdido." Opening the disc is Krupa's trio with Willie Smith (alto sax) and Hank Jones (piano) providing a solid and singularly swinging rhythm section. While Smith drives the band, Krupa is front and center with his antagonistic percussive prodding. "Idaho" is marked with Jones' rollicking post-bop mastery as he trades solos with Smith and can be heard quoting lines from Monk before yielding to Smith. The cover of Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady" sparkles from beginning to end. Jones' opening flourish sets the tenure as Smith settles into a smoky lead, containing some nice syncopation and regal augmentation from Jones. Krupa primarily provides ample rhythm work on the emotive ballad. Smith's diversion into "Stormy Weather" is notable for exemplifying the lyrically improvisational nature of this combo. The tempo is significantly stepped up on a cover of Benny Goodman's "Flying Home," which is full of high-spirited playing and garners a sizable reaction from the audience. The lengthy "Drum ...
| | Pee Wee Russell Jazz Reunion CD (1961)
Gene Krupa Buddy Rich music CDs
$9.65 This LP (whose contents have been reissued on CD) features a reunion between tenor-saxophonist Coleman Hawkins and clarinetist Pee Wee Russell; they revisit "If I Could Be with You," a song they had recorded together in a classic version back in 1929. Russell was beginning to perform much more modern material than the Dixieland music associated with the Eddie Condon players and on this set (which also features trumpeter Emmett Berry, valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, pianist Nat Pierce, bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Jo Jones), he plays a couple of Duke Ellington tunes, two originals and "Tin Tin Deo." Hawkins is also in fine form and this somewhat surprising program is quite successful. ~ Scott Yanow
Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff.
Recorded at Nola Penthouse Sound Studios, New York City February 23rd 1961. The reunion was over, and the musicians were packing up. Pee Wee Russell was listening to the playback and arguing with himself as to how many different wys he might have formed e

| | Gerry Mulligan Meets Johnny Hodges CD (1960) Remastered; Digipak
Gene Krupa Buddy Rich album
$8.69 Gerry Mulligan's 1959 studio date with Johnny Hodges is one of the most satisfying sessions of his various meetings with different saxophonists for Verve, yet it was inexplicably the last to be made available on CD. With a hand-picked rhythm section consisting of pianist Claude Williamson, bassist Buddy Clark, and drummer Mel Lewis, and three originals contributed by each of the two leaders, everything gels nicely, though several tracks took more than three takes (in spite of liner note writer Nat Hentoff's assertions) to reach their final form. Mulligan contributed the gorgeous ballad "What's the Rush" (where he sat back to enjoy Hodges' solo and never plays his own horn), the easygoing swinger "Bunny," and the brisk cooker "18 Carrots (For Rabbit)," the latter which its composer would revisit with his Concert Jazz Band. The veteran alto saxophonist contributed the low-key ballad "Shady Side," the sassy blues "Back Beat" (later re-recorded by Hodges during a still unreleased 1960 studio meeting with Ben Webster), ...

| | K T Tunstall Eye To The Telescope CD (2006)
Gene Krupa Buddy Rich songs
$9.75 A runaway success in the UK, EYE TO THE TELESCOPE, KT Tunstall's debut, finally hit the States in early 2006, a year after its initial release. On this assured 12-song set, the Scottish singer/songwriter mines a charmingly sensitive and intelligent vein of pop/rock that positions her somewhere in between Beth Orton and Sheryl Crow. The key to Tunstall's sound is her resonant and soulful voice, and the album's bold, but never over-the-top production only serves to further enhance her songs. Though the highlights of the disc include the jangly "Another Place to Fall," the eminently catchy "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree," and the shuffling "Suddenly I See," the entire record is surprisingly solid, easily ensuring a bright future for Tunstall.

KT Tunstall is a sparkling new songwriter with Chinese blood, a Scottish heart, great legwarmers and a cool name - "well, it's got a bit more attitude than Kate which just says farmer's daughter to me," she laughs. KT ...

$20.39 Robert Elliot ''Jonah'' Jones was an A-class trumpet player, a dynamic and surefooted soloist who expressed himself through Mainstream Jazz.
