OSCAR PETERSON TRIO AT THE CONCERTGEBOUW is actually a live recording of a concert at The Civic Opera House and bonus tracks from an LP titled THE MODERN JAZZ QUARTET AND THE OSCAR PETERSON TRIO AT THE OPERA HOUSE which were originally recorded at the Shrine Auditorium. Although Oscar Peterson and his trio did perform a midnight concert on April 12-13, 1958, no recording of this concert has been found.
This album--the title has been a misnomer since its initial release in 1957--was not recorded at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam but at the Civic Opera House in Chicago. That bit of trivia aside, this is an exceptional snapshot of the magic produced by Oscar Peterson's mid-'50s trio. When guitarist Herb Ellis and bassist Ray Brown locked in with Peterson's piano, the three unfurled a tornado of musical ideas that wrapped bop, swing, popular balladry, and chamber music in highly complex, beautiful arrangements.
Brown and Ellis keep pace with Peterson's trademark velocity on hyper-accelerated takes on standards ("The Lady is a Tramp") and mid-tempo blues ("Bluesology"), moving between mainstream jazz ("I've Got the World On a String") and music that is quite advanced ("Budo"). Though Peterson would work in a trio format for much of his career, he seldom attained the heights reached by this ensemble, and AT THE CONCERTGEBOUW is one of the trio's finest offerings.
Principally recorded at The Civic Opera House, Chicago, Illinois and the Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles, California on September 29, 1957 and October 9, 1957. Includes an interview with Herb Ellis and liner notes by Reuel V. Lubag.

Down Beat (12/94, p.49) - 3.5 Stars - Good Plus - "...it's clear that Peterson, guitarist Herb Ellis, and bassist Ray Brown...were in great, supple form. Ellis...and Peterson are like an old married couple who can finish each other's sentances without even trying. Outrageously impressive..." At The Concertgebouw songs
$10.29 With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. Altman's audacious film reflected the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s, resulting in one of the biggest box office smashes of its time. Introducing the techniques he ...
| | Dizzy Gillespie Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945 CD (2005)
At The Concertgebouw album
$16.65 The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. What Gitler's essential writing also reveals is that these dates were approximate by only weeks to the original studio recordings of these classics, and there was no small amount of controversy surrounding this revolutionary bebop. Clearly bop was a vehicle for intricate melodic invention followed by lengthy soloing, aspects of which Parker with Gillespie were perfectly suited for. Fact is, the situation surrounding the sonic capture and extended neglected shelf life of this performance was far from optimal. Symphony Sid Torin is the M.C., rambling as always, making repeated references to Dizzy "Jillespie" and misidentifying ...
| | Robert Gass Songs Of Healing CD (1992)
At The Concertgebouw CD music
$13.75 Psychologist Robert Gass and his choral group On Wings of Song occupy a unique place in the widening field of recorded chant. Where many popular Kirtan leaders and chant aficionados lean toward tribal rhythms, exotic instrumentation, and charismatic vocal improvisation, Robert Gass favors steady, soothing tempos and simple acoustic accompaniment. Although Gass and others take the occasional solo vocal turn, the sweetly blended voices of the choir remain in the foreground. Their cohesiveness models a universal harmony appropriate for this collection of healing songs. "Universal" also describes the song choices. Gass puts his own gentle spin ...
