| | Sarah Vaughan Golden Hits CD Sarah Vaughan Discography of CDs
Includes original liner notes by Lou Sidran & new liner notes by Will Friedwald.
An overview of the legendary singer's golden years with Mercury Records, GOLDEN HITS comprises mostly pop material. Backed by a string orchestra, some of these selections, such as "Broken Hearted Melody," even contain a tincture of early Motown. Pundits have argued that Vaughan's pop hits somehow degraded her; however, she infused artistry into any song or setting, and the highly arranged accompaniments and unique tunes she performed suited her attitude and technique, if not her potential.
Vaughan's jazzier side, as evidenced on her 1954 self-titled release with Clifford Brown, is understated on GOLDEN HITS (although her version of "Lullaby of Birdland" from that album is included here). Nonetheless, GOLDEN HITS highlights the singer's ability to coax deep meaning from a lyric. On "Tenderly" and "Misty," she croons with her characteristic supple and rounded tone, savoring every note along the way. GOLDEN HITS showcases Sarah Vaughan's wide range, perfectly controlled vibrato, and intuitive gift for lyrical irony.

Golden Hits songs
$15.15 The third installment of this series has 28 more big and small chart hits from 1957-1964, exemplifying the most clean-cut aspects of early rock & roll. The adjective "clean-cut" is not a pejorative presumption; it's taken right from the banner on the back sleeve. There are a few teen idols here (Fabian, Johnny Crawford), but actually the sounds take in much more than teen idol rock, covering string-drenched early soul (Little Willie John's "Talk to Me, Talk to Me" and Dee Clark's "Raindrops"), Elvis Presley impersonations (Terry Stafford's "Suspicion" and Ral Donner's "Girl of My Best Friend"), a Buddy Holly impersonation (Tommy ...
| | 25 All-Time Novelty Hits CD (2002)
Golden Hits album
$14.45 These 25 tracks were all hits between 1955 and 1977, so it might not be quite accurate to dub them "all-time novelty hits." Still, that's the time span that most people who buy such compilations are going to want to zero in on, so what's the harm in the chronological limits? It can be taken for granted that a novelty compilation is going to have a lot of frivolous material and might be too much of a good thing all at once if you're not in a certain mood. But this is a pretty good assortment of cuts, usually with a strong or at least tenuous rock base, ranging from familiar classic smashes to some items that are seldom anthologized or played on oldies radio. Among the best familiar tunes are the Olympics' Coasters-like "Western Movies," Bill Parsons' Elvis Presley satire "The All-American Boy" (actually sung by future country star Bobby Bare), Jan & Dean's "Baby Talk," Johnny Bond's ...

| | Tierney Sutton I'm With The Band CD (2005)
Golden Hits songs
$11.19 Since popping into our collective jazz consciousness as a semifinalist in the Thelonious Monk Jazz Vocal Competition in 1998 and signing with Telarc Jazz a few years later, the versatile stylist Sutton Tierney has carved a unique career around theme-centered recordings -- most notably with Unsung Heroes (featuring sung renditions of songs normally done as instrumentals) and Blue in Green (a tribute record to Bill Evans). Her creativity with tempo, song selection, and witty modulations is at full-throttle on her fifth disc for the label, I'm with the Band, an ...

$10.49 | | Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown Gate's On The Heat CD (1975)
Golden Hits album
$11.69 Principally recorded at Michel Magne Studio, Herouville, France. Includes liner notes by Mike Leadbitter.
GATE'S ON THE HEAT is the Verve reissue of the original French release of Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's 1973 performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival. The album has the distinction of featuring more of Brown's impressive violin work than is often heard in his extensive discography; the opener showcases a fierce fiddle solo that condenses blues, country, and traces of classical music in one extended soulful jam. The rest of the album provides an excellent taste of Brown's ever-surprising stylistic variability. He leaps from deep blues ("The Drifter") to straight-up Nashville country ("Never Ending Love For You") to inventive treatments of standards (Handy's "St. Louis Blues").
The band's close knit chemistry gives each number a powerful energy and the blend, even with the addition of brassy, rhythmic punctuation from The Memphis Horns (overdubbed in the studio after the concert), is smooth and airtight. More than usual, Brown's music is informed by contemporary soul ...
