Anita O'Day recorded many rewarding albums in the 1950s when her voice was at its strongest, and this collaboration with the Oscar Peterson Quartet (comprised of pianist Peterson, guitarist Herb Ellis, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer John Poole) may very well be her best. Not only is the backup swinging, giving a Jazz at the Philharmonic feel to some of the songs, but O'Day proves that she could keep up with Peterson. "Them There Eyes" is taken successfully at a ridiculously fast tempo, yet the singer displays a great deal of warmth on such ballads as "We'll Be Together Again" and "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered." While Peterson and Ellis have some solos, O'Day is never overshadowed (which is saying a lot) and is clearly inspired by their presence. The very brief playing time (just 33 minutes) is unfortunate on this straight CD reissue of the original LP, but the high quality definitely makes up for the lack of quantity. A gem. ~ Scott Yanow
Digitally remastered by Dennis Drake (Polygram Studios).
Recorded at Universal Studios, Chicago, Illinois on January 31, 1957.
Personnel: Anita O'Day (vocals); Oscar Peterson (piano); Herb Ellis (guitar); Ray Brown (bass); John Poole (drums).

For more than a half-century, Anita O'Day has been the most adventurous jazz singer of them all. Though Betty Carter may have bent more notes or stretched more vowels, it is O'Day who has always gone out on a musical limb no matter what the context. ...

Anita Sings The Most songs
$17.39 Australian country-folk singer Audrey Auld Mezera is known for her witty and melodic approach to Americana, and Nina Gerber is a session guitarist and secret weapon for artists like Nanci Griffith, John Gorka, and Tom Paxton. This album archives a particularly stellar live show that the two artists played in California in 2005, replete with between-song banter. It's a humorous, deeply human, and unapologetically old-school folk album that captures the imperfect glory of a great live performance.
Audrey Auld Mezera is an Australian singer/songwriter in the âAmeric-kindaâ style. âShe writes and sings songs with a worldly truth... She not only sounds like she grew up on Music Row in Nashville, but she writes the kinds of songs that built Music Row in the first place.â ~ Gabe Meline, North Bay BohemianAfter marrying and relocating to California it was only a matter of time before Audrey crossed paths with one of the greatest accompanists in the world, Nina Gerber. The magic created by the two was evident from the start and after hearing the recording of their second show together they realized they had something special. âIn The Houseâ a live double CD is the result.âWhen presented with the opportunity to host Audrey Auld Mezera and Nina Gerber in concert, I couldnât say âYesâ fast enough. I became a fan of Audreyâs about two years ago and have hosted her and seen her numerous times, always totally enthralled with her shows. Audreyâs songwriting, singing and performances are quite captivating - with the songs touching on a variety of subjects, making us laugh and feel sorrow, inspiration, pain and love â all delivered with her beautiful voice. She always creates a good concert and lights up the room with her gorgeous smile and stories. It's no wonder there's a growing group of âAudrey-Heads.â Iâve seen Nina Gerber countless times since the 1970's when she first played with Kate Wolf. I know Iâm not alone when I say she is absolutely incredible ...
