Floating over bar lines using a light, airy tone, Lester Young redefined (and refined) the tenor saxophone. A nonconformist, Young's sound soon overshadowed Coleman Hawkins' thicker, more abrasive style. Indeed, Young's approach influenced most of the new wave of saxophonists to come out of the 1950s. On PRES AND TEDDY, we hear Young (nicknamed Pres) teamed up with the great pianist Teddy Wilson, who himself, is one of three definitive swing era pianists (the other two being Earl Hines and Art Tatum).
PRES AND TEDDY is a small group outing that also highlights the talents of bassist Gene Ramey and drummer Jo Jones. This is straight-ahead, no bull jazz that doesn't cross too many stylistic boundaries. Recorded in 1956, tinges of cool jazz color the playing and feel of the record. Still, the band's swing roots shine through, making this release more closely aligned with earlier genres of jazz. Highlights include the medium bounce "Louise" and the bluesy "Pres Returns."

Root Damage is a two-disc, 49-track look at Sympathy for the Record Industry's blues output between 1989 and 2003. The label has long been a proud bastion of loud, raucous sounds from the garage and anywhere else music is played with abandon. Their approach to the blues over the years has been similar, and the fruits of their efforts make for a filthy listening experience. The artists they have recorded range from the authentic Southern sounds of R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, and CeDell Davis to the classic punk-blues of the Gun Club, '68 Comeback, and Panther Burns to the Childish British blues of Holly Golightly, Dan Melchior, and the man himself, Billy Childish, to the country blues of the Reigning Sound, Mark Spitz Freestyle, and Monsieur Jeffrey Evans to the modern supercharged punk-blues of the Soledad Brothers, Mr. Airplane Man, and Pearlene. The highlights of the set are quite plentiful, but the best of them are former Flamin' Groovie Chris Wilson's drunken acoustic "Dark Haired Girl," the Kirby Grips' country blues at the junior prom-sounding "Needless," the Deadly Snakes' yowling "Love Undone," Wreckless Eric's boozy "Harry's Flat," the Gibson Brothers' manic "Memphis Chicken," and an early lo-fi track from Beck, "Leave Me on the Moon." Saxophonist Candy Dulfer's RIGHT IN MY SOUL is her seventh solo release.
Smooth jazz superwoman Candy Dulfer is the total package -- she's pretty, dresses well, plays a mean sax, and sings a bit. At a time when the Dutch smooth jazz star's idol and mentor saxophonist, David Sanborn, released one of the most organic, stripped-down, and funky albums of his career, Dulfer seems intent on "gussying-up" songs with what somebody must have perceived as "hip" electronic production. Many jazz musicians have attempted such electro-jazz productions in the name of Miles Davis-styled boundary-pushing, only to end up with weak and boring albums that are neither avant-garde enough for jazz fans nor hip enough for electronic music fans -- Herbie Hancock's Future 2 Future and Tim Hagans' Animation-Imagination come to mind. Right in My Soul is an R&B album of smooth jazz wrapped in pseudo-electronica beats and loops. Having added singing to her act a few albums back, Dulfer mainly focuses on vocal pop tunes, utilizing her saxophone for lite-funky asides. Some of the tracks are pleasant enough, featuring catchy, melodic hooks and passable improvisation. The production here can be a problem, as it utilizes elements of electronic music styles such as jungle, drum'n'bass, and hip-hop jazz. ~ Matt Collar
