| | Nina Simone Pastel Blues/Let It All Out CD Nina Simone Discography of CDs
Recorded live in New York, in March and April 1964. Studio tracks recorded in New York in 1965. Includes liner notes by Joel E. Siegel.
This CD combines two recordings that Nina Simone released in the mid-'60s for the Philips label. The first is the 1965 PASTEL BLUES, an ironic title for the raw, bitter tone of this stark exploration. Beginning with the austere percussion-and-vocal chain gang-like chant "Be My Husband," all the scarier for being penned by her then-husband Andy Stroud, it continues with some uptempo blues classics, such as "Trouble in Mind" and "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out," made all the more unsettling by her stinging vocals. It's thrilling to hear her now-classic version of "Sinnerman," a 10-minute rocking emotional rollercoaster sung to a lost soul, in its original context, emerging from a bleak version of "Strange Fruit." Ms. Simone's performances here are powerful and emotionally challenging.
Where PASTEL BLUES is a unified work, LET IT ALL OUT is a melange of tracks from three different sessions in 1964 and 1965. Highlights include a haunting version of Billie Holiday's "Don't Explain," featuring Rudy Stevenson's breathy and mournful flute, and a swinging version of "Love Me or Leave Me," where Ms. Simone's piano solo almost meanders into a Bach invention.

Personnel: Nina Simone (vocals, piano); Rudy Stevenson (flute, guitar); Al Shackman (harmonica, guitar); Lisle Atkinson (bass); Bobby Hamilton (drums). Pastel Blues/Let It All Out Music Nina Simone Pastel Blues/Let It All Out Songs Pastel Blues/Let It All Out Review

$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy ...

| | Bad Wizard Sophisticated Mouth CD (2002)
Pastel Blues/Let It All Out CD music
$9.49 In the short year since their debut release, Brooklyn-by-way-of-Georgia's Bad Wizard have quickly made a name for themselves as one of the Big Apple's hardest working and hardest rocking outfits, which might explain the speedy arrival of their follow-up effort, 2002's Sophisticated Mouth. Unfortunately, such expediency also resulted in an undeniable sophomore slump. Most noticeably, the album lacks the sonic punch in the gut of its predecessor -- not necessarily from a songwriting perspective, mind you, but in the production department, where it falls rather short in terms of tightly wound crunch. Some might see that exchange as a bonus for clearing the air of some excess distortion, and with standout moments such as "Hurricane" and "Whoo!" handily bullying less focused moments like "Soft, Warm and Wet" and "Loosen Up!" for their lunch money, Bad Wizard can hardly be accused of phoning this one in. Gravel-throated wild man Curtis Brown and firebrand guitarist Eddie Lynch are still the band's dual focal points (as well as the only remaining players from the first LP), but not even their spirited performances can carry the load all by themselves -- especially with new slide guitarist Tina Gorin such a non-factor throughout. "Needle 2 Groove" introduces a surprising fuzzed-out organ solo over its thrusting main riff (a bastardized version of Motörhead's "Iron Horse"), and a cover of Uriah Heep's "Love Machine" wraps it with some surprise, ...
