This 1991 record ended a decade-plus silence from the man who helped create bossa nova. Though JOAO features full orchestral backing, the arrangements by Clare Fischer dart in and around Gilberto's understated singing and rhythmically ingenious guitar work, never overpowering the artist or obscuring his unique vision. The effect is not unlike that achieved by Nelson Riddle in his orchestrations for Frank Sinatra. Though Gilberto tackles a tune in French ("Que Reste-T-Il de Nos Amours") and a Cole Porter classic in English ("You Do Something to Me"), even these are presented in the bossa nova style to which he has remained true throughout his career. The delicate beauty of Gilberto's voice, the soft-but-insistent pulse of his guitar, and the otherworldy grace of his artistic conception are as much in evidence on JOAO as they are on his legendary recordings from 30 years prior. As ever, the man proves to be simply incapable of making a wrong move.

Joao album
$9.05 Recorded live at the Palace Theatre, Sao Paulo, Brazil on April 13, 1994.
We've been spoiled by Steve Diggle releases, but the too-average Some Reality is a letdown in comparison to Flag of Convenience's Northwest Skyline, Exiles, and Diggle's solo Heated and Rising EP. It's a tad too simple in conception; the mix is uneventful, as the guitars don't jump at you. More telling, there's little material of his usual caliber, and his rhythm section, including old FOC chum Gary Rostock on drums, needs some more pizzazz. Worse, the second selection, "Playing With Fire," is uncharacteristically bad, stalling any crucial early momentum. This is not what anyone hoped for, if the affable guitarist was to restart a stalled vehicle for the mess of songs he writes that Pete Shelley and company don't record. All that said, though, with lowered expectations, Some Reality does have its share of modest pleasures. "Where You're From" and "What Else Can You Do" are two acoustic lovely ditties that strongly suggest Heated and Rising's direction was worth pursuing, and a few trademark monster hooks pop up. The one that twice forms the bridge on the second best track, "Three Sheets to the Wind" ("Some reality takes you home/It's hard to swallow/Some reality keeps you stoned/Hard to swallow"), is a perfect example of what he's capable of. Besides, Diggle's familiar rough-and-tumble, sincere voice is always welcome. So though he might want to work harder on the writing, and invest in a more involved, or at least better-mixed production (and get his ho-hum mates to bust out more, like on "Three Sheets" and the rocking "All Around Your Face," instead of sometimes sounding like a journeyman bar band), here's hoping the well-liked Diggle keeps at this. When he's good, he's good. ~ Jack Rabid

| | Antonio Carlos Jobim Wave CD (1967)
Joao CD music
$8.35 Perhaps Antonio Carlos Jobim's best-known album, 1967's WAVE was Jobim's first release for his longtime producer Creed Taylor's special CTI imprint at A&M Records. In fact, it was only the label's second release--after Wes Montgomery's A DAY IN THE LIFE--and WAVE went a long way towards establishing both the sound and even the look of the fledging label. Playing guitar, piano and harpsichord on these 10 original instrumentals, Jobim is backed by a small combo and Claus Ogerman's usually tasteful but occasionally overbearing strings. The tracks are brief--over half are under three minutes--introducing a theme, coloring it with a few brief solos and a lot of solid ensemble playing, and then fading. The overall mood is mellow without being sleepy, and as a whole, WAVE is a soothing, almost intoxicating delight. While it's probably not Jobim's best album, it's certainly one of his most offhandedly entertaining.
Composer: Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Personnel: Antonio Carlos Jobim (guitar, piano, celesta, harpsichord); Lewis Eley, Julius Held, Leo Kruczek, Joseph Malignaggi, Louis Stone, Louis Haber, Bernard Eichen, Raoul Poliakin, Gene Orloff, Irving Spice, Paul Gershman, Emanuel Green, Harry Lookofsky (violin); Abe Kessler, Charles McCracken, Harvey Shapiro, George Ricci (cello); Raymond Beckenstein, Jerome Richardson, ...
| | Joao Gilberto Live In Montreux CD (1991)
Joao music CDs
$16.05 Anyone who has heard the landmark GETZ/GILBERTO sessions knows that bossa nova icon Joao Gilberto works wonderfully with a full band. This concert album, however, recorded live at the 1985 Montreux Jazz Festival, reveals how amazing the Brazilian singer/guitarist can sound without any accompaniment. Employing only his nearly whispered vocals and delicate six-string acoustic playing, Gilberto mesmerizes an initially rowdy crowd with this set of 13 bright, breezy tunes.
While he performs a few classics, namely the genre-defining songs "Garota De Ipanema" (AKA "The Girl from Ipanema") and "Aquarela Do Brasil" (AKA "Brazil"), Gilberto also offers up less-renowned material such as Caetano Veloso's gentle "Menino Do Rio" and the easy-going "Estate," which features the artist singing in Italian rather than his native Portuguese. Essential for any devoted ...
| | Joao Gilberto Amoroso/Brasil CD (1993)
Joao songs
$11.99 Joao Gilberto is perhaps forever destined to be lesser known to casual jazz fans than his occasional collaborator Stan Getz (whose GETZ/GILBERTO albums introduced the United States to bossa nova) and his ex-wife Astrud Gilberto (whose shy, delicate voice made her one of the most distinctive and beloved jazz vocalists of the '60s). However, true fans of Brazilian music recognize that Gilberto is second only to Antonio Carlos Jobim as a writer and interpreter of traditional Brazilian music and Brazilian-influenced jazz.
These two albums, collected in full on one CD, are among Gilberto's best solo albums. Alternating between standards like "'S Wonderful" or "Besame Mucho" and Brazilian tunes like Jobim's "Wave" and the original "Triste," AMOROSO is a fine, romantic jazz album. BRASIL, as the title suggests, consists of six traditional-style sambas, sung in Portuguese to acoustic guitars and hypnotic percussion. Both are essential to Gilberto fans and neophytes.
AMOROSO was released in 1977.
BRASIL was released in 1981.
BRASIL personnel: Joao Gilberto (vocals, guitar); Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethania (vocals); Clare Fisher (keyboards); Milcho Leviev, Michael Boddicker (synthesizer); Jim Hughart (bass); Joe Correro (drums); Paulhinho Da Costa (percussion).

| | Joao Gilberto Joao Voz E Violao CD (2000)
Joao album
$11.65 JOAO VOZ E VIOLAO won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album.
A US release of new material by bossa nova master Joao Gilberto is like the appearance of a comet. It doesn't happen often, and when it does you'd be wise to pay close attention. Nearly a decade separates JOAO VOZ E VIOLAO from its predecessor, and thankfully little seems to have changed. Gilberto's voice and guitar possess the same purity that made his early-'60s recordings so unforgettable. Caetano Veloso, one of many Brazilian artists strongly influenced by Gilberto, achieves a production masterstroke here by the simple act of putting the man in the studio with only his own guitar for company.
The result is the most directly affecting Joao Gilberto recording to reach American ears since bossa nova's heyday four decades prior. Unhampered by an intrusive string section or superflous studio players, Gilberto is free to pursue his quiet but forceful vision with undiluted focus. Nodding to his roots, he performs a couple of Jobim tunes, including the famed "Desafinado," and embraces the present by performing a number of Caetano Veloso compositions, ...

| | Don Patterson Just Friends CD (1996)
Joao music CDs
$9.89 Among all the practitioners of soul-jazz during the genre heyday of the late 1960s into the 1970s, Hammond B-3 organ groovemeister Don Patterson and modern Texas tenor Booker Ervin (also a veteran of jazz ensembles led by Randy Weston and Charles Mingus) are among those usually overlooked. Yet the pair teamed up to release several albums during that time that were, if not standards of the genre precisely, full of vitality and fervor -- Ervin's playing, especially, often sounded so emotional and combustible that it seemed like he was suffering a nervous breakdown through his horn, perhaps a residue of his time with Mingus. Legends of Acid Jazz: Don Patterson / Booker Ervin surfs the cream of three mid-'60s recording sessions: in a trio setting with drummer Billy James, all five selections from The Exciting New Organ of Don Patterson, including one of Miles Davis' early signature tunes, "Oleo" (actually a Sonny Rollins composition); the title track from Hip Cake Walk, a 17-minute monument to the soulful power of organ that endured as Patterson's most-beloved hip-swiveler (featuring Leonard Houston on alto sax); and "Love Me With All Your Heart" from Patterson's People. Legends of Acid Jazz: Don Patterson / Booker Ervin suffers only slightly from a program that leans heavily toward the mainstream -- "Love Me With..." goes more than six minutes, and "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" nearly eleven. ~ Chris Slawecki
This is part of Prestige's Legends Of Acid Jazz series.
Recorded in May 1964.

| | Charlie Byrd Thank You For Funking Up My Life CD (1978) (Import) Netherlands
Joao songs
$11.79 Charlie Byrd's THANK YOU FOR FUNKING UP MY LIFE includes the songs "Sunning in Your Loveshine" and "Cristo Redentor," among others.
The remastered reissue comes in a digipak with new liner notes.
This album was Byrd's debut for Elektra/Asylum and a return to the charts after the demise of Blue Note Records. After taking a brief hiatus from recording, Byrd got right back in the business of commercial jazz/R&B while the purists again recoiled in horror. During the '70s, he was one of the leaders at making intelligent, R&B-based jazz with high selling albums, Black Byrd and Places And Spaces, both produced by Larry Mizell and Fonce Mizell. Thank You...For F.U.M.L. (Funking Up My Life) has Byrd producing himself, taking disco much too seriously and straying too far from his jazz roots. Although this does feature his 125th Street Orchestra, which included Wah Wah Watson, Ed Watkins, and Gregory Phillinganes, they paled in comparison to his 1972-1975 bands. The disco-fied "In Love With Love" isn't even suited for Byrd's trumpet blaring in the background. The other dance tracks, "Have You Heard the News?" and the title track, almost take a scientific approach to disco, and to that end there's little spontaneity. Byrd did much better with the melodically challenging songs on the album. Tracks like the assured "Your Love Is My Ecstasy" and the sharp, mid-tempo "Loving You" has him animated and playing recondite and rewarding notes. By the album's last song, "Close Your Eyes and Look Within," it's clear that the relative lightweight nature of Thank You...For F.U.M.L. (Funking Up My Life) wasn't going to bring out the best in him or the listener. ~ Jason Elias

$12.69 A new CD from the band formerly known as Faith! The CD contains fourteen new songs ranging in style from Elliot's sparse "Waltz #3," to Gary's power pop rockers "Zero" and "Mary Jane." There's Elliot's "Love Games" which features English Beat rhythmical verses before erupting into a three-guitar tradeoff ala The Beatles on Abbey Road. Three very electric openers give way to Gary's bittersweet "Fade," highlighted by Emily Gorlin's haunting French horn. You can definitely hear Elliott Smith, Jeff Buckley, and Badly Drawn Boy influences in what they did this time around. However, there are little ...
