Personnel includes: Stan Getz (tenor saxophone); Hershey Kay (conductor); Alan Martin, Gerald Tarack, Norman Carr (violin); Jacob Glick (viola); Bruce Rogers (cello); John Neves (bass); Roy Haynes (drums). Producer: Creed Taylor. Reissue producers: Michael Lang, Ben Young. Recorded in July, September and October 1961. Includes liner notes by Dom Cerulli and Joe Goldberg. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Chris Herles (Polygram Studios). This is part of the Verve Master Edition series. A year or two shy of his bossa nova success, Stan Getz set his mind to improvising against a backdrop of darkish yet scintillating string charts. The orchestral muscle was provided by arranger Eddie Sauter; the heady and fluid horn lines, of course, came from Getz. The jazz star might have been all airy samba fog to some, but on this classic date he really showed his expansive horn talents: whether leaping and yelping on such galvanizing sides as "I'm Late, I'm Late" or ingeniously responding to the many shades heard in a grand ballad like "I Remember When," Getz is never short on ideas or panache. Admittedly Getz's most challenging date and arguably his finest moment, Focus roams the vast jazz landscape outside of bop and boogaloo to fabulous and memorable effect. [The 2003 Japanese reissue is identical to the original release. It does have dynamically remastered sound and an exact miniature replica of the original gatefold cover in thick cardboard with a rice paper sleeve.] ~ Stephen CookDown Beat (3/29/62) - 5 Stars - Excellent - "...FOCUS is a pithy, thoughtful and extraordinarily attractive set of seven pieces for string orchestra and tenor saxophone, not quite like anything ever before attempted. It ranks with the best of the Gil Evans-Miles Davis collaborations..." Focus Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) I bought this album on vinyl because Zoot Sims told me to! Like the reviewer from Abilene I've been waiting for years for it to be reissued on CD. Post bop and pre-bossa, I still think this album defined Stan Getz as THE most innovative melodist...ever! This is NOT a Stan Getz with Strings album (although he did do a SGWS at one point). This is a genre of it's own Getz' solos over the Eddie Sauter orchestra are a free-form, flowing, set of tone poems by the formost jazz poet-laureate. If you don't buy this one, it is definitely your loss. Fantastic!!! Submitted by John (Buckeye, AZ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Getz at his best Heard about newage music, Getz did it first and no one has done it better since. Eddie Sauter'a arraingments and Stan's horn, WOW you do not get better music anywhere.
I looked for this for over 20 years. I have worn the grooves of the LP and hoped I would find it on CD.

Iconoclastic Understand that this was Stan Getz's "favorite" album. That is saying something folks. Pick it up and see why. Submitted by basil (Columbia, MD, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
$13.59 The 1957 Brandeis Jazz Festival featured the work of 6 of the finest composers from the jazz and 20th Century Classical avant-garde. George Russell, Charles Mingus and Jimmy Giuffre represented the jazz contingency. These outstanding concerts featured the finest musicians of the day performing some extremely difficult and highly rewarding charts that tested theirs mettle as both improvisers and sight readers. Among the brightest stars of the concerts was pianist Bill Evans, whose considerable talents were tested in a variety of styles to great results. His excellent ...
