These aren't encounters in the confrontational sense, but a merger of great musical minds. ~ Ron Wynn This 1957 session brings together two of the most important tenor saxophonists in jazz history. Coleman Hawkins is known as the father of the jazz sax, while Webster may be its greatest balladeer. COLEMAN HAWKINS ENCOUNTERS BEN WEBSTER highlights the talents of both tenor men nicely, with Hawkins and Webster consistently complementing each other's playing. In fact, they develop a kind of conversational interplay that is quite beautiful, particularly on the gentle "It Never Entered My Mind" and the slowly swinging "Shine on Harvest Moon." Although the rest of the band consists of stellar musicians (including pianist Oscar Peterson and guitarist Herb Ellis), they concede the spotlight to Hawkins and Webster, whose dual saxophones more than carry the record. Other standout tracks include the sultry ballad "Tangerine" and the Latin-flavored "La Rosita." $10.15 KIT MCCLURE - JUST THE THING – THE SWEETHEARTS PROJECT REVISITEDA STORY SPANNING SEVEN DECADES OF WOMEN IN JAZZ"The International Sweethearts of Rhythm, an important all women band of the 1940’s, have been an inspiration to me since I first heard them on the Rosetta Records release (1984). It has been a great privilege for me and my band to record a two CD tribute to the Sweethearts in homage to their musicianship, their music, their spirit and their story. This has been a labor of love." -- Kit McClure The Kit McClure Band made its debut at the Ritz in New York City in 1982. The band became a popular fixture in the New York nightclub scene, and was soon offered a tour with the great Cab Calloway. This led to recording industry interest from Island Records, and Kit and her band were put on payroll to prepare a show with the rock star Robert Palmer. Palmer featured Kit on saxophone in his band and featured the Kit McClure Band within his show. This show played sold-out houses at Radio City Music Hall, Garden State Arts Center and similar venues across the Northeast. Eight tours of Japan ensued, and in between Kit found time to produce the Kit McClure Band's debut recording, Some Like It Hot, on RedHot Records. The success of Some Like it Hot brought the attention of jazz legend Teo Macero, who produced McClure's second release, Burning, in 1996. McClure and her band toured Europe five times in support of these two recordings and then settled into a steady calendar of US dates. The ...
