Stan Getz / Joao Gilberto Getz/Gilberto CD (1963) Top Seller
Composer of Desafinado, Plays album for sale One of the biggest-selling jazz albums of all time, not to mention bossa nova's finest moment, Getz/Gilberto trumped Jazz Samba by bringing two of bossa nova's greatest innovators -- guitarist/singer Joao Gilberto and composer/pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim -- to New York to record with Stan Getz. The results were magic. Ever since Jazz Samba, the jazz marketplace had been flooded with bossa nova albums, and the overexposure was beginning to make the music seem like a fad. Getz/Gilberto made bossa nova a permanent part of the jazz landscape not just with its unassailable beauty, but with one of the biggest smash hit singles in jazz history -- "The Girl from Ipanema," a Jobim classic sung by Joao's wife, Astrud Gilberto, who had never performed outside of her own home prior to the recording session. Beyond that, most of the Jobim songs recorded here also became standards of the genre -- "Corcovado" (which featured another vocal by Astrud), "So Danço Samba," "O Grande Amor," a new version of "Desafinado." With such uniformly brilliant material, it's no wonder the album was such a success but, even apart from that, the musicians all play with an effortless grace that's arguably the fullest expression of bossa nova's dreamy romanticism ever brought to American listeners. Getz himself has never been more lyrical, and Gilberto and Jobim pull off the harmonic and rhythmic sophistication of the songs with a warm, relaxed charm. This music has nearly universal appeal; it's one of those rare jazz records about which the purist elite and the buying public are in total agreement. Beyond essential. [The CD was also released with bonus tracks.] ~ Steve Huey

Wave CD (1967)
Composer of Desafinado, Plays buy CD music Perhaps Antonio Carlos Jobim's best-known album, 1967's WAVE was Jobim's first release for his longtime producer Creed Taylor's special CTI imprint at A&M Records. In fact, it was only the label's second release--after Wes Montgomery's A DAY IN THE LIFE--and WAVE went a long way towards establishing both the sound and even the look of the fledging label. Playing guitar, piano and harpsichord on these 10 original instrumentals, Jobim is backed by a small combo and Claus Ogerman's usually tasteful but occasionally overbearing strings. The tracks are brief--over half are under three minutes--introducing a theme, coloring it with a few brief solos and a lot of solid ensemble playing, and then fading. The overall mood is mellow without being sleepy, and as a whole, WAVE is a soothing, almost intoxicating delight. While it's probably not Jobim's best album, it's certainly one of his most offhandedly entertaining.

Charlie Byrd / Stan Getz Jazz Samba CD (1962) Top Seller
Composer of Desafinado, Plays songs Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Suha Gur (Polygram Studios).
The album that launched Jobim's now classic "Desafinado" Jazz Samba was released in 1962, in the early days of America's bossa nova craze and before the music lost its charm to cliche. Joined by fellow Latin jazz pioneer Charlie Byrd on classical guitar, and a discreet bass and drums team, tenor saxophonist Getz makes light and elegant music out of a collection of catchy bossas and sambas. His virtuosity, bluesy drive and smooth, soft tone make the music cook like bossa jazz rarely has since. There are still enough surprises to make this record more than just a period piece, and it stands as a fine example of Getz's lyrical genius.

Antonio Carlos Jobim / Elis Regina Elis & Tom CD (1974) Top Seller
Composer of Desafinado, Plays CD music In 1974, bossa nova innovator Antonio Carlos Jobim teamed up with Elis Regina, one of Brazil's finest and most beloved singers, for a recording that ranks among the best Brazilian pop albums ever. Jobim's compositions are renowned for their melodicism and intricacy, and they are beautifully showcased here. This is largely due to Regina's masterfully subtle and breathy performances (listen to her slow reading of "Corcovado" for a case study in perfection), but everything about this disc, from the clear, tasteful arrangements to the way the voice of Jobim and Regina interact, is a delight. Alongside select albums by Joao Gilberto and Caetano Veloso, ELIS & TOM is a must-have for even the most casual Brazilian fan.

Tide CD (1970)
Composer of Desafinado, Plays buy CD music Digitally remastered by Jellied Loaf (Universal Mastering Studios-East).
One of Antonio Carlos Jobim's best-known albums, 1970's TIDE is a companion piece to 1967's WAVE, a similarly lush and smooth collection for producer Creed Taylor's CTI Records. In fact, this album's lengthy title track is a theme-and-variations exploration of the main melodic line from WAVE's title track. For most of the album, Eumir Deodato, soon to become famous for his own contributions to lite-jazz fusion, handles the arrangements. Comparing his contributions to those of longtime Taylor arranger of choice Claus Ogerman, TIDE is a sprightlier album with a somewhat looser, less orchestrated feel. Of the new tracks, "Tema Jazz" is the highlight, although the sparkling "Carinhoso" is nearly its equal. This reissue features remastered sound and four bonus tracks, including three alternate takes of "Tema Jazz."
This is part of the Verve By Request series.

Terra Brasilis CD (1980)
Composer of Desafinado, Plays songs Antonio Carlos Jobim fans are very much split on the topic of arranger Claus Ogerman. They tend to either love the albums Ogerman did with Jobim--TIDE and WAVE are the best-known--or dismiss them outright as over-orchestrated near-easy-listening tripe. Released in 1980, the double album-length TERRA BRASILIS is the last of the Jobim-Ogerman collaborations, but it's just as controversial as the earlier ones. The 20 tracks, taken from all eras of Jobim's career going right back to the BLACK ORPHEUS days, are given Ogerman's usual heavy orchestral style, with Jobim playing piano and singing in front of Ogerman's swooping, lush arrangements. None of these are the definitive versions of these songs--even tracks Ogerman had previously arranged, like 1967's "Wave," sound a bit denser now--but fans of Ogerman's sometimes over the top arranging style will find much to enjoy here.
