Beneath the Surface finds original lead singer Maysa Leak returning to the Incognito fold. Coincidentally or not, the record finds the group moving deeply into smooth, laidback, jazzy soul. It's a seductive sound and the group executes it well, even though there ironically isn't that much substance beneath the surface. ~ Leo Stanley

Q (12/96, p.134) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - "...The songs are consistently stronger and more melodic, and there's far less instrumental self-indulgence....this is Incognito thriving on the virtues of simplicity and melody to create their best album yet." Beneath The Surface Music Incognito Beneath The Surface Songs Beneath The Surface Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews A Incognito's Masterpiece This album is a masterpiece of acid jazz and R&B. Bluey & company show us the quality of his amazing music. The Maysa's voice delights us again in tracks as 'beneath the surface', 'out of the storm', the cool 'hold on to me' and the wonderful ballad 'a shade of blue'. In this realase, also stands out an excelent male vocalist: Christopher Ballin, who makes very good performances in tracks as 'labour of love', 'without you' and 'living against the river'. Alternative Jazz and R&B Incognito is probably one of the best bands that ever came out in the last decade. Imani's vocals is absolutely enchanting. I recently bought two of their CD's, its "Eleven" and "Adventures in Black Sunshine" both cd's are great. You get yourself into a jazzy, romantic mood listening to them. Im still trying to get hold of the live Tokyo, cd its one of their best ever, and its quite hard to find here in Manila. A lot of people here also listen to them. Their Best! Of all the albums by this group I find this one to be their best. With Maysa doing her great vocals as usual you can't go wrong with this one. Songs like "A Shade Of Blue" and "Misunderstood" are the standouts among a truly well-written group of songs. I find this group to be literally a breath of fresh air on the music scene today. Real instruments and timeless vocals are not the norm today. Incognito is able to this caliber of work time and time again....most impressive! This Is Bluey's Best Album To Date I was fortunate enough to land the European version of this outstanding album in the used cd section of an independent music store, recently (the one MINUS the two ho-hum bonus tracks tacked on at the end as an afterthought, lol). I could go on and on about how much Maysa Leak turns it out on the cuts she performs on (e.g. title track, 'A Shade Of Blue'), or how committed Bluey was in making the entire project shine with nothing but live musicianship and arrangements that would make the '70s seem not so "retro" (don't you just HATE that word!?!?!?) in retrospect. To put it bluntly, 'Beneath The Surface' is the Incognito concept at its finest and therefore should be added to your collection whether you're a fan of this music or not. After all these years, I still can't believe this has gone under the radar. What has happened to good music today... Submitted by Manuel (California) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Beneath The Surface
$18.59 Beat Avenue is 60-year-old Eric Andersen's most ambitious album, a 90-minute tour de force that encapsulates his musical and lyrical concerns over a lifetime. The music is often-dense rock dominated by a rhythm section led by guitarist Eric Bazilian of the Hooters. Equally dense is Andersen's highly poetic versifying, which he sings in his gruff baritone. Andersen is world-weary in these songs, roaming the globe haunted by the past and fearful of the future. He confesses to a reckless youth, but acknowledges that he can no longer afford such license. "What once was Charles Bukowski," he sings in "Before Everything Changed," referring to the free-living beat poet, "is now Emily Dickinson." The ballads and love songs "Song of You and Me," "Shape of a Broken Heart," "Under the Shadows," and "Still Looking for You" are rendered tenderly, but they are also full of regret and loss, past-tense reflections that recount memories of love long gone. The first disc of Beat Avenue is complete and formidable unto itself, but there is a second CD consisting of two lengthy songs. The title track, ...
