Ella & Duke at the Cote D'Azur buy CD music Digitally remastered using 20-bit K2 Super Coding System technology.
Digitally remastered by JVC using XRCD (Extended Resolution Compact Disc) technology.
Sarah Vaughan is accompanied by her regular rhythm section of the early '80s (with pianist George Gaffney, bassist Andy Simpkins, and drummer Harold Jones), guitarist Freddie Green, and the Count Basie horn sections on this enjoyable date. The arrangements by Sammy Nestico and Allyn Ferguson unfortunately do not leave much room for any of the Basie sidemen to solo, but Sassy is in superb form. She is at her best on "I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues," a remake of "If You Could See Me Now," and a rapid "When Your Lover Has Gone," although some listeners may enjoy her overly dramatic rendition of "Send in the Clowns." ~ Scott Yanow

Ella Fitzgerald In Budapest CD (1999)
Ella & Duke at the Cote D'Azur songs Recorded live in Budapest, Hungary on May 20, 1970. Includes liner notes by Joe Goldberg.
Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1999, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Not many jazz singers played Eastern Europe during the time of the Iron Curtain, but jazz records were nevertheless a treasured underground commodity in Communist countries. This concert from May 20, 1970 is atypical only in its location, however. Fitzgerald is backed by her usual road trio of the era--pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Frank de la Rosa, and drummer Ed Thigpen--and performs a fairly standard repertoire. Highlights include a fairly breathtaking scat solo in the opening "Crazy Rhythm," a smoky "As Time Goes By," and fine versions of several pop hits of the era, including a slinky take on Bacharach and David's "This Girl's in Love With You." The sound is clear and warm, and the audience certainly sounds properly appreciative! A fine concert document.
Recording information: Budapest, Hungary (05/20/1970).
Personnel: Ella Fitzgerald (vocals); Tommy Flanagan (piano); Frank De La Rosa (bass); Ed Thigpen (drums).

Dakota Staton More Than the Most! CD (1959)
Ella & Duke at the Cote D'Azur CD music Another of Dakota Staton's fine outings from the latter half of the '50s, More Than the Most finds the singer working her magic on a varied selection of standards and relatively obscure sides. While maybe not as well-regarded as her famous debut, The Late, Late Show, this Staton release stands as one of the singer's better early efforts. Enveloped in Sid Feller's urbane mix of romantic ballad backdrops and West Coast-style swingers, Staton wraps her coyly seductive pipes around standouts like "East of the Sun," "September in the Rain," and "Some Days It's Monday." Mixing in some of Dinah Washington's muscle and Sarah Vaughan's airy sophistication, Staton ably navigates this fine program of classic pop-jazz. ~ Stephen Cook
Personnel: Dakota Staton (vocals).

Ella Fitzgerald Fine and Mellow CD (1974)
Ella & Duke at the Cote D'Azur buy CD music Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1987, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley California).
"Fine and Mellow" is one of those jazz standards that's so oft-recorded that it can't be claimed by any particular singer. However, it fits one of Ella Fitzgerald's most distinctive performing styles so well, and even acts as a description of it, that its use as the title of this collection is only natural.
This 1974 date, with Fitzgerald backed by a smallish combo led by her usual pianist Tommy Flanagan and featuring exquisite guitarist Joe Pass, is a fine and mellow delight. Fitzgerald is in slow-burn mode here; although the performances are never particularly intense, there's a confident mastery exhibited throughout. Featuring standards written by her recently-deceased friend and collaborator Duke Ellington, like "I'm Just a Lucky So and So" and "Rockin' in Rhythm," alongside a spine-tingling version of Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight," FINE & MELLOW is a graceful, almost elegiac, session.
Recorded at MGM Studios, Los Angeles, January 8, 1974. Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather.
Personnel: Ella Fitzgerald (vocals); Tommy Flanagan, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Zoot Sims (saxophone); Harry "Sweets" Edison (trumpet); Clark Terry (flugelhorn); Joe Pass (guitar); Ray Brown (bass); Louis Bellson (drums).

Sarah Vaughan Linger Awhile: Live at Newport and More CD (2000)
Ella & Duke at the Cote D'Azur songs This collection contains various alternate takes from 1957 to 1982, as well as live tracks recorded at The Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, Rhode Island on July 7, 1957.
Recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, Rhode Island on July 7, 1957; Group IV Studios, Hollywood, California between April 25, 1978 and March 1, 1982; RCA Studios, New York, New York on September 13, 1979. Includes liner notes by Richard S. Ginell.
Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1999, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
In an ideal world, Sarah Vaughan's performance at the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival wouldn't have gone unreleased for 42 years. But because of various circumstances, that performance remained in Norman Granz's private collection until the release of this CD in late 1999. Here's what happened: At the 1957 Newport Festival, Granz taped sets by the Count Basie Orchestra and the Oscar Peterson Trio for release on his Verve label, and ended up taping Vaughan's set as well. But Vaughan was signed to an exclusive contract with Mercury at the time, and Mercury was close to doing some live taping of its own. (In fact, the singer's excellent live album At Mister Kelly's was recorded in Chicago only a month after her Newport appearance.) The same trio that backed a 33-year-old Sassy at that Chicago club (pianist Jimmy Jones, bassist Richard Davis, and drummer Roy Haynes) backs her at Newport, where she is in fine form on performances of familiar standards such as "Black Coffee," "All of Me," "The Masquerade Is Over," and "Sometimes I'm Happy." Because Vaughan's Newport set wasn't nearly long enough to fill up a CD, roughly half of this disc is devoted to eight alternate studio takes she recorded for Granz's Pablo label from 1978 to 1982. It's interesting to hear the older Vaughan on the same CD as the younger Vaughan: Alternates of "Just Friends," "That's All," and other standards show us just how much her voice had deepened since 1957. But she still had one of the most enviable and impressive ranges in jazz, and Vaughan in her 50s was every bit as expressive and charismatic as Vaughan at 33. As a rule, the alternates are only slightly inferior to the master takes that Pablo ended up choosing -- and they will undoubtedly be of interest to collectors. Although not essential and not recommended to casual listeners, Linger Awhile is a CD that seasoned Vaughan fans will be happy to add to their collections. ~ Alex Henderson
