Arranger: Lalo Schifrin. Compared to his earlier Blue Note recordings, organist Jimmy Smith's outings for Verve are not as strong from a jazz standpoint. Certainly his renditions of the "Theme from Joy House," "The Cat" and the "Main Title from The Carpetbaggers" are not all that significant. However, this CD has some tasteful arrangements for the big band by Lalo Schifrin and some good playing by the great organist on a variety of other blues-oriented material. Also the combination of organ with a big band is sometimes quite appealing, making this CD worth picking up despite its commercial tracks. ~ Scott YanowCD Review - Performance 10 / Sound 8 Cat Music | List Price | $14.98 (You save $3.69) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Jazz CDs, Jazz Instrument, Soul Jazz, Organ | | Label | Verve | | Orig Year | 1964 | | All Time Sales Rank | 23649 | | CD Universe Part number | 1177581 | | Catalog number | 539756 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Mar 24, 1998 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | Creed Taylor | | Engineer | Rudy Van Gelder | | Recording Time | 32 minutes | | Personnel | Jimmy Smith - organ Ernie Royal George Duvivier - bass Bernie Glow Tony Studd - bass trombone Ray Alonge Phil Kraus - percussion Don Butterfield - tuba Earl Chapin Jimmy Maxwell Jimmy Buffington - French horn Marky Markowitz Bill Correa

Cat Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) Great music from '64 Jimmy Smith plays the Hammond like nobody. This album has horns accompanying him, which gives the album more of a Jazz feel, than the blues. My only criticism is the length of the CD. Master of Organ with big band backup Organist Jimmy Smith in his very best period. Hungry for challenge, creativity and inspiration shows his mastering interchanging with a full brass orchestra of trumpets, french horns, englis horns, trombones, tuba and bass trombone.
Solid arrangements by Lalo Schifrin. Submitted by a reviewer (miami, fl.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Organ & big band at the peak! This LP change my life to organ jazz at the age of 15...Jimmy at his best with Lalo Schifrin's big band charts and a hard swinging band with notable musicians. Is there more to say after hearing "The Cat", "Basin Street Blues" et al? Jimmy indeed plays the B3 clever to balance with the big band. This big band CD stands out to be No.1 from JOS! Essential Jimmy Smith One of the very best from Smith's Verve productions with a fine balance between the searing B3 solos and big arrangements. But there are other Verve albums from this time that should be reissued (Are you listening, Verve?) How about the original "Who's Afraid of Virgina Woolf" ?? $16.55 " Long awaited album by Australian trio internationally recognised as one of today's few true jazz pioneers. As TRIOSK, Laurence Pike (drums), Adrian Klumpes (piano / keyboard) & Ben Waples (double / electric bass) have searched for something beyond the conventions of the jazz trio combining electronic elements soundscapes and manipulations of traditional jazz instrumentation. In the course of their two albums '1+3+1' and 'Moment Returns' and tours around Australia and Europe they have developed a large and loyal following of listeners who both do and don't consider themselves "jazz fans".
Triosk: Adrian Klumpes (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, synthesizer, sampler); Ben "Donny" Waples (acoustic bass, electric bass); Laurence Pike (drums, percussion). Forging ahead from their inaugural collaboration with minimalist electronica master Jan Jelinek and the loop-based experimentation of their "solo" debut Moment Returns, the Australian group Triosk continue to wander and explore in a hazy territory that's probably best described as post-jazz. At times, they flirt with the semblance of a relatively straight-ahead modern piano jazz outfit -- opener "Visions IV" in particular evokes the muscularity of the Bad Plus, with only a couple of minor electronic flourishes. More often they sacrifice nearly all of the fundamentals of jazz (and, for that matter, most music) -- melody, all but the most basic chordal harmony, in some cases all but the vague suggestion of rhythm -- in the single-minded pursuit of texture. It's this conceptual minimalism, the absence of jazz-like forms and structures, more than the actual sound of the album, that nudges The Headlight Serenade from jazz toward the ambient/electronic category. After all, it is still predicated on improvisation, and the bulk of it consists simply of piano, bass, and drums, readily recognizable as such even when ...
