Personnel includes: Antonio Carlos Jobim (vocals, whistle, piano, guitar); Claus Ogerman (arranger, conductor); Urbie Green (trombone); Ray Beckenstein, Phil Bodner, Jerry Dodgion, Don Hammond, Romeo Penque (woodwinds); Harry Lookofsky (violin); Ron Carter, Richard Davis (bass); Airto Moreira, Joao Palma (drums, percussion); George Devens (percussion). Producer: Claus Ogerman. Reissue producer: Richard Seidel. Recorded at Columbia Recording Studios, New York, New York from December 11-14, 1972. Digitally remastered by Maragaret Goldfarb (Universal Music Studios-East). This is part of the Verve Records By Request series. Though this is one of the more obscure Jobim albums, it did introduce what some believe is Jobim's masterpiece, the hypnotically revolving song "Aguas de Marco" (heard here in Portuguese and English versions). Mostly, however, the record lets listeners in on another side of Jobim, the Debussy/Villa-Lobos-inspired creator of moody instrumental tone poems for films and whatnot, with the instrumental colors filled in by Jobim's old cohort, Claus Ogerman. This was supposed to be a breakthrough for Jobim, bursting out of the bossa nova idiom into uncharted territory, yet a lot of this often undeniably beautiful music merely treads over ground that Villa-Lobos explored long before ("Train to Cordisburgo" especially). In any case, Jobim would explore his serious muse with greater success later on. ~ Richard S. GinellQ (9/00, p.132) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...As kitsch as can be imagined...but on JOBIM [he] manages to suffuse his music with noticable gravitas..." Author: Elis Regina. Arrangers: Antonio Carlos Jobim; César Camargo Mariano. In 1974, bossa nova innovator Antonio Carlos Jobim teamed up with Elis Regina, one of Brazil's finest and most beloved singers, for a recording that ranks among the best Brazilian pop albums ever. Jobim's compositions are renowned for their melodicism and intricacy, and they are beautifully showcased here. This is largely due to Regina's masterfully subtle and breathy performances (listen to her slow reading of "Corcovado" for a case study in perfection), but everything about this disc, from the clear, tasteful arrangements to the way the voice of Jobim and Regina interact, is a delight. Alongside select albums by Joao Gilberto and Caetano Veloso, ELIS & TOM is a must-have for even the most casual Brazilian fan. This beautiful -- and now legendary -- recording date between iconic Brazilian vocalist Elis Regina and composer, conductor, and arranger To

Personnel: Antonio Carlos Jobim (guitar, piano, celesta, harpsichord); Lewis Eley, Julius Held, Leo Kruczek, Joseph Malignaggi, Louis Stone, Louis Haber, Bernard Eichen, Raoul Poliakin, Gene Orloff, Irving Spice, Paul Gershman, Emanuel Green, Harry Lookofsky (violin); Abe Kessler, Charles McCracken, Harvey Shapiro, George Ricci (cello); Raymond Beckenstein, Jerome Richardson, Romeo Penque (flute, piccolo); Joseph Singer (French horn); Jimmy Cleveland, Urbie Green (trombone); Domun Roma, Claudio Gion, Bobby Rosengarden (drums, percussion); Claudio Slon, Dom Um Romao, Claudio Sion (drums). Liner Note Authors: Norman Gimbel; George Frazier. Recording information: Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, NJ (05/22/1967-06/15/1967). Photographer: Pete Turner. Arranger: Claus Ogerman. When Creed Taylor left Verve/MGM for his own label under the auspices of A&M, he quickly signed Antonio Carlos Jobim and they picked up right where they left off with this stunningly seductive record, possibly Jobim's best. Jobim contributes his sparely rhythmic acoustic guitar, simple melodic piano style, a guest turn at the harpsichord, and even a vocal on "Lamento," while Claus Ogerman lends a romantically brooding hand with the charts. A pair of instant standards are introduced ("Wave," "Triste"), but this album is to be cherished for its absolutely first-rate tunes -- actually miniature tone poems -- that escaped overexposure and thus sound fresh today. The most beautiful sleeper is "Batidinha," where the intuitive Jobim/Ogerman collaboration reaches its peak. One only wishes that this album were longer; 31:45 is not enough. ~ Richard S. Ginell Perhaps Antonio Carlos Jobim's best-known album, 1967's WAVE was Jobim's first release for his longtime producer Creed Taylor's special CTI imprint at A&M Records. In fact, it was only the label's second release--after Wes Montgomery's A DAY IN THE LIFE--and WAVE went a long way towards establishi
| | Antonio Carlos Jobim Composer Of Desafinado, Plays CD (1963)
Jobim
$15.29 Personnel includes: Antonio Carlos Jobim (piano, guitar); Claus Ogerman (arranger); Jimmy Cleveland (trombone); Leo Wright (flute); George Duvivier (bass). Producer: Creed Taylor. Reissue producer: Michael Lang. Recorded at A&R Studios, New York, New York, on May 9 and 10, 1962. Includes liner notes by Dom Cerulli, Johnny Mandel and Bob Belden. Digitally remastered by Chris Herles (Polygram). This is part of the Verve Master Editions series. In his first American album, Antonio Carlos Jobim presents a dozen of his songs, each one destined to become a standard -- an astounding batting average. Jobim, who claimed to have been out of practice at the time of the session, merely plays single notes on the piano with one hand, punctuated by chords now and then, sticking to his long, undulating melodies with a few passages of jazz improvisation now and then. Yet it is a lovely idea, not a gesture is wasted. Arranger Claus Ogerman unveils many of the trademarks that would define his Creed Taylor-produced albums with Jobim -- the soaring, dying solo flute and spare, brooding unison string lines widening into lush harmony; flutes doubling on top of Jobim's piano chords -- again with an exquisitely spare touch. The songs include "Desafinado," "Corcovado," "Chega de Saudade" (No More Blues), "The Girl From Ipanema," "Meditation," "One Note Samba," and half-a-dozen others (every one of which is included on The Man From Ipanema set). ~ Richard S. Ginell This disc offers instrumental interpretations of some of Jobim's most famous compositions from the salad days of the early '60s Bossa Nova craze. It's also one of the earliest examples of Jobim's long-standing and fruitful collaboration with arranger Claus Ogerman. Trademarks like Jobim's single-note piano style, the accompanying flute melodies and Ogerman's arranging techniques (unison string parts, the bass clarinet underpinnings in "How Insensitive") would decorate Jobim's music for the next two decades. On Jobim's second A&M album, Eumir Deodato takes over the chart-making tasks, and the difference between him and Claus Ogerman is quite apparent in the remake of "The Girl From Ipanema": the charts are heavier, more dramatic, and structured. Sometimes the arrangements roll back so one can hear, say, the dancing multi-phonic flute of wildman Hermeto Pascoal on "Tema Jazz," and the rhythms often veer away from the familiar ticking o

Jobim
$31.25 This documentary of the Rolling Stones' 1969 US tour has become a legendary, harrowing symbol of the tragic demise of the "Peace and Love" era. After a successful tour across the United States, the Rolling Stones gave a free December concert at Altamont Speedway in California with the Grateful Dead (not seen performing), Ike and Tina Turner, Jefferson Airplane, and the Flying Burrito Brothers (all seen performing one song each). The poorly planned show was fraught with problems from its inception. The band unwisely selected the Hells Angels motorcycle club to provide security, and after the pre-existing chaos was fueled by very visible alcohol and drug abuse, the bikers resorted to violence to keep the stoned, restless, and often naked crowd in line. The result: dozens of injuries and the on-screen stabbing of a young African-American man (during "Sympathy for the Devil," no less) by one of the concert's "staff security."
In a manipulative but effective move, the Maysles brothers and Charlotte Zwerin filmed Mick Jagger in the editing room witnessing the on-camera murder for the first time. But aside from that unexpected drama, the film also works as a rock-and-roll document, capturing the band at their most relaxed, intoxicating, and electrifying.

Recording information: Beacon, NY; Chateau Martin, Los Angeles, CA; Orange Stella Studio, Santa Monica, CA; Sound City Studios, Van Nuys, CA. Photographer: Susan Titelman. With a concept that could have failed on so many levels in lesser hands, Ry Cooder stuns once again in MY NAME IS BUDDY and demonstrates why he is one of America's most adventurous musicians. His chosen material is a loose collection of animal character sketches--the titular Buddy is a cat--based on labor struggles and the lower class in Depression-era America. Think of it as Woody Guthrie meets Beatrix Potter. While an odd construct on page for a man that jammed with Beefheart, the Stones, and the Buena Vista Social Club, MY NAME IS BUDDY flies with every track. The stellar cast of musicians includes the brothers Seeger, Van Dyke Parks, Jim Keltner, Paddy Moloney of the Chieftains, and Flaco Jimenez, and grounds the fairy tale atmosphere with musical blood and guts. The ensembles tear through early-19th-century forms (country blues, bluegrass, and old-time arrangements) with a rollicking flair. During the present era, as the Iraq war grinds on, Americans are trying belly-button gazing, trying to remember a history where America regarded itself as world citizen, and came to the aid of many nations in trouble and nearing despair. It is true that this is part of our national heritage and Ameri

| | Jonathan Goldman Chakra Chants CD (1999) (Import)
Jobim
$14.95 Personnel includes: Jonathan Goldman (vocals, various instruments). Recorded in Boulder, Colorado. Personnel: Jonathan Goldman (vocals, various instruments); Rabbi Shefa Gold (vocals). Jonathan Goldman founded Spirit Music in the 1970s (not to be confused with the band Spirit), and was lead guitarist of the Boston-based group Tennie Komar & the Silencers. He purchased a home owned by Stephen Stills in Boulder, CO, and moved the operation out west. An acclaimed lecturer, this album won two Visionary awards in 1999, Best Album of the Year and Best Meditation Healing Album. The sounds are soothing and spread across 62 minutes-plus on this CD. There is a 20-page booklet which explains how to use Chakra Chants as a "self-healing meditation tool," as a "sonic environment for creating balance and alignment" -- which, in lay terms, probably means as background sound -- as "a tool...to actively create sound with and...resonate your own Chakras," and as listening music. It is an impressive work jam-packed with spiritual information, including the value of the cover art as an "energy balancing tool." If this sounds like emperor's new clothes stuff to the unenlightened, well, those involved in this spiritual quest take their work, and their art, very seriously. The material is put together with love and devotion, and simply reading the information that comes with the disc is as unique an experience as listening to the sounds Goldman and his associates have manifested, to use their term. For the listener who doesn't believe sound can heal, it is still a soothing listening experience and worth a visit. ~ Joe Viglione Sound healing, which aims to promote health and general well-being through exposure to various types of music, has no more prolific exponent than Jonathan Goldman, whose album CHAKRA CHANTS won Visionary Awards for Album of the Year and Best Healing-Meditation Album in 1999. Best experienced in conjunction with one of Goldman's several books on sound healing, CHAKRA CHANTS uses the seven Sacred Vowels of Chinese, Hebrew, and Sanskrit traditions to balance the chakras and focus energy. Pythagorean tunings, along with such sonic elements as Tibetan throat singing and various wind and synthesized instruments, are also used to create a comforting and all-enveloping sense of well-being that is ideal for both yoga practice and calm meditation.
