Milton Nascimento's formidable discography is packed with fine music, but his releases from the late 1960s and early '70s are especially wonderful. 1970's MILTON is a Nascimento classic. Like much of the exciting music coming out of Brazil during that time (Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Jorge Ben, and others, were rivaling the U.S. and U.K. for pop inventiveness), Nascimento's music was a delectable synthesis of psychedelic rock, Beatles-inspired melody, folk, and traditional Brazilian forms.

MILTON benefits both from fine songwriting (which is credited to Nascimento, Lo Borges, and several others) and intriguing instrumentation and arrangements. Flutes, organ, and squirrely electric guitar licks create fascinating textures, and Nascimento's voice, as usual, is lilting and precise. Nascimento is rightfully known for his ballad performances, and the presence of lovely songs like "Canto Latino" show why.

This is part of the Verve By Request series.

5 stars Milton Nascimento - Milton (1976, A&M/Verve)
One of my five favorite Milton Nascimento albums, this album was only released in the U.S. Every song is a remake/cover of older songs sung by Milton that are mainly unknown to American/English audiences. Songs like "Francisco", "Chamada (The Call)" & "Tostao (One Coin)" reveal the versatality/flexibility of Milton's voice, which I appreciate and was also rare to find in many of his older albums. Strongly reccommended!

Dirty Three In The Fishtank CD  (2004) Extended Play

Milton album
CD $9.65  Audio Samples
In late 1999, the Dutch label KonKurrent invited Minneapolis band Low into an in-house studio to record one of the label's near-legendary In the Fishtank sessions; bands have two days to record between 20-30 minutes of all new material of their choosing. Also touring at the time were Low's pals, the Australian instrumental dynamos the Dirty Three. Low invited them in, and in the same collaborative spirit as another In the Fishtank session involving Tortoise and the Ex, this half-hour session is the document. What is truly amazing about this hookup is how natural these two bands sound playing with one another. Low has been striking out lately, playing different kinds of material while keeping its signature slower-than-slow approach to songwriting. The Dirty Three has taken a more melodic and dynamically restrained tack since their landmark Ocean Songs recording of a few years back. Of the six songs recorded here, none is more successful that the nearly ten-minute cover of Neil Young's "Down By the ...

Doors Live At The Aquarius Theater-The Second Performance CDs  (2001)

Milton CD music
CD $28.15  4.2 stars Top 500
As the title suggests, this set contains the second of two complete shows from the Doors at the Aquarius Theater in Hollywood, July 21, 1969. Both were professionally documented, anticipating enough material for a stopgap concert album as the band simultaneously composed and arranged new sides for their subsequent Morrison Hotel and LA Woman studio releases. With over three decades under the bridge and the blessings of the surviving bandmembers, Live at the Aquarius Theater: The Second Performance provides a real-time recreation of the entire two-and-a-quarter-hour performance from the sonically superior multi-track tapes. Initially the interaction between the band and audience borders on ennui, while a seemingly unfazed John Densmore (drums), Robbie Krieger (guitar), Ray Manzerek (keyboards/bass pedals/vocals), and Jim Morrison (vocals) musically ascend to their outlandish pre-Miami selves. ...

On A Few Miles from Memphis, recorded by pianist Harold Mabern in 1968, he's joined by tenors George Coleman and Buddy Terry, bassist Bill Lee, and drummer Walter Perkins for a bluesy, rhythm-filled set featuring familiar fare like "A Treat for Bea" and fun originals like "Walkin' Back." There's also the odd inclusion of "There's a Kind of Hush," a pop song that comes out sounding like an old standard here. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr. When record labels like Prestige release two albums on one CD, it's a great bargain for music fans. A Few Miles from Memphis combines the album of the same name and Rakin' and Scrapin', both recorded by pianist Harold Mabern in 1968. On the first set he's joined by tenors George Coleman and Buddy Terry, bassist Bill Lee, and drummer Walter Perkins for a bluesy, rhythm-filled set featuring familiar fare like "A Treat for Bea" and fun originals like "Walkin' Back." Solomon Burke That's Heavy Baby 1971-1973 CD  (2005) (Import) Australia

Raven presents the very best of Solomon Burke's recordings for MGM in the 1970s, many on CD for the first time. A pioneering soul singer, Burke's powerful voice and fervent emotionality were much-admired through the 1960s. At MGM, with arranger Gene Page, Solomon deftly crafted a commercial and contemporary sound - both urban pop ballads and rhythmic hymns to black empowerment, all framed around his impassioned voice. Using fractured, multi-layered background vocals (a la Marvin Gaye), and deep vocals not unlike Barry White, Burke created, over three albums, some of his most powerful, distinctive and important work. This 22-track compilation culls the essence of Burke's MGM albums and includes three rare non-LP tracks. Raven's That's Heavy Baby gathers 22 Solomon Burke rarities he recorded for MGM between 1971 and 1973, following his career-defining soul hits for ...

Ike & Tina Turner Nutbush City Limits/Feel Good CD  (2006) Bonus Tracks

Milton album
CD $17.75
Raven's 2006 two-fer Nutbush City Limits/Feel Good combines two of Ike & Tina Turner's last albums together and adds five bonus tracks, three of which were taken from other Ike & Tina albums from the early '70s, one taken from a Tina solo record, and one disco mix of "Nutbush City Limits." The album that arrives first on this two-fer was actually the last of these two to be released: Nutbush City Limits appeared in 1973, a year after Feel Good, but its title track is one of Ike & Tina's best-known songs so it's an appropriate choice to kick off this disc. Besides, the two records are so similar in tone and approach, it'd be easy to assume that Feel Good arrived before Nutbush, but that isn't to say they're interchangeable. Both records are hard day-glo funk, overloaded with fuzz guitars, wah wahs, clavinets and horn sections, but of the two, Nutbush City Limits is a bit closer to gritty deep soul thanks to a slow-burning cover of Dobie Gray's country-soul classic "Drift Away," the gospel-fied "That's My Purpose," a churning, funky reworking of "You Are My Sunshine," and, of course, the ...

Many of the legends of acoustic guitar in the 20th century have already passed on -- John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Ali Farka Toure. Due partially to his spare recording career, Peter Walker's own reputation has not always been as well known as those of said giants, but his own influence has been considerable. Simple Complications
Rocky Winslow Simple Complications CD  (2001) (Import)

Milton songs
CD $16.55  Audio Samples
Rocky Winslow is hardly the first improviser to embrace more than one type of jazz on an album. On some albums, musicians have divided their time between straight-ahead and non-straight-ahead jazz -- the listener might hear five bop offerings and five fusion offerings, or perhaps a CD that is half smooth jazz and half post-bop. But Rocky Winslow finds an unusual way to acknowledge electric and acoustic jazz forms on Simple Complications, his first album as a leader. After providing seven post-bop or hard bop performances and keeping things acoustic for about 50 minutes, the big-toned trumpeter/flugelhornist makes a totally unexpected detour into amplified fusion with the 13-minute title track. Winslow leads you to believe that Simple Complications is going to be an entirely straight-ahead album -- then, out of nowhere, he pleasantly surprises you by ending the CD on an aggressive jazz-rock note. Just when listeners have Winslow pegged as a straight-ahead player, his album takes an electric turn. Those first seven selections (which range from Woody Shaw's "Organ Grinder" to four Winslow originals) are, to be sure, very straight-ahead -- and very mindful of the post-bop and hard bop that came out in the '60s. Possessing a big, fat tone, Winslow obviously owes a lot to Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, and Lee Morgan (all of whom were greatly influenced by Clifford Brown). Winslow has also learned a thing or two from Miles Davis, but most ...

Anthony Mazzella is an innovative guitar virtuoso and master musician. BILLBOARD magazine describes him as "the new generation of guitar hero" and GUITAR ONE magazine voted him "one of the top ten guitarists in the country". Anthony released four CD's, he tours internationally, has contributed tracks on compilation CD's, made guest appearances on major artists releases, receives airplay on national radio and satellite television, and has an independent film soundtrack to his credit. He is an established presence in the genre of instrumental world music and has exciting new projects on the horizon. Anthony began his career as a concert guitarist in New York City. He quickly built up a strong following performing in most every live music club in Manhattan. He then landed a headlining spot at the BLUE NOTE NYC just one year after street performing in front of it and has since gone on to perform on stages all over the world. He has opened for headlining artists such as James Brown, Tower of Power, The Commodores, and Spyro Gyra. His original music is composed with a fusion of world influences consisting of jazz, classical, flamenco, rock, medieval, middle-eastern, electric and acoustic fingerstyle. Anthony also plays a one-of-a-kind Ten String Guitar that he designed and was built by his father. On this unique instrument, Anthony displays his abilities in fingering bass lines and chords with his left hand while simultaneously playing melodies on the fret board with his right. Mazzella began studying music on the violin at age five. He then proceeded to learn ...
