Following in the well-trod footsteps of Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Brown, Chet Baker, and Wynton Marsalis, among others, Roy Hargrove has his day with strings, purveying moody, lovelorn ballads at glacial tempos. At first, one's hopes are raised that this could turn out to be one of the best attempts in this field. The leadoff track "You Go to My Head" is gorgeous; Hargrove plays soulfully and inwardly, and pianist Larry Willis's arrangement is emotionally satisfying without being cloying. However, the disc continues on and on in this fashion, one tune seeming to blend into another, one arrangement sounding like the next (besides Willis, who contributes five charts, Gil Goldstein does three others, and Cedar Walton chips in two). Even Hargrove tries his own hand at string arranging on his composition "Natural Wonders"; the results are noticeably less sophisticated and not as richly-harmonized as the others on the disc. Sherman Irby acts as a capable foil on alto sax, and bassist Gerald Cannon and drummer Willie Jones III have little else to do but keep their gently booming and rustling sounds moving. Whether on flugelhorn or trumpet, Hargrove's undoubted sincerity and musicality go only a limited distance over the 68-minute span of the CD before simply repeating themselves out. CDs like this make one wish that the 10" LP was back; that time frame was just long enough for some of jazz's best string albums of the past. ~ Richard S. Ginell As with most great soloists, Roy Hargrove's discography would not be complete without an album of romantic ballads accompanied by a lush string orchestra. MOMENT TO MOMENT is the trumpeter's first foray into this popular format, and he accomplishes his mission with musicality and style. Like Miles Davis before him, Hargrove possesses a restrained melancholy that he reserves for occasions such as this. Sticking mostly to flugelhorn, his blue tone and practiced control mesh with the cushioning strings to create a smoky atmosphere perfectly suited to the heartfelt melodies of familiar works like "You Go to My Head" and "I Fall in Love Too Easily." Some of the most expressive highlights of the disc include the Sinatra classic "I'm a Fool to Want You," Ray Noble's "The Very Thought of You," and Pat Metheny's "Always and Forever."Entertainment Weekly (5/26/00, p.75) - "...A dozen romantic ballads, backed by straightforward strings. Poised, pure-toned, and respectful of composers, he shines on first-rate vintage faves like 'You Go To My Head'..." - Rating: B- Moment To Moment Music | List Price | $18.98 (You save $5.83) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Jazz CDs, Jazz Instrument, Trumpet | | Label | Verve | | Orig Year | 1999 | | All Time Sales Rank | 45500 | | CD Universe Part number | 1177642 | | Catalog number | 543540 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | May 23, 2000 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | Larry Clothier; Roy Hargrove | | Engineer | Phil Edwards; Ray Brown; Gil Goldstein | | Recording Time | 68 minutes | | Personnel | Roy Hargrove - trumpet, flugelhorn Gil Goldstein Cedar Walton - arranger Willie Jones, III - drums Gerald Cannon - bass

Moment To Moment
$16.39 Guitarist Bart Reardon brings forty years of experience as a concert sideman, studio musician and studio engineer to the making of this original work, Once Upon A Guitar. The album starts out with a light, breezy jazz tune and progresses through a variety of styles including light rock, pop, world beat, frisky acoustic finger style, and electric blues. As the CD winds to a close, two impressionistic and contemplative songs bring the listening to a restful conclusion. How will you know if it’s good music, or if it’s for you? The sound samples won’t lie. Samples #2, 5, 6 & 7 should give you a good indication of whether you’d be happy with a purchase. This album has been favored among folks in medical and teaching professions as well as shop workers and even aspiring musicians. Once Upon A Guitar will bring a sense of scenery and mood to your room, car, or headphone system. Check out the sound samples and have a listen. We hope you enjoy it.Program notes and some background information:1. October '97October 1997 completed the construction phase of my recording studio. The song’s underlying chord progression first came to mind to use for testing and tweaking room acoustics and monitoring. Over several more years, arrangement elements were added until the song developed into what you hear on this CD. The mood is light and happy, as was the time when the studio building had made the transitions from a hundred pages of drawings, then to cinderblock in a mud pit, and finally, to a building with heat, electricity, and carpet. I humorously think of it as a song for background music in the shopping mall ... only on this session, the guitar player got to play whatever he wanted.2. Ready To RollIn a bare bones arrangement of just four instruments (drums, bass, rhythm guitar, and melody), Ready To Roll pays a nostalgic visit to the 1970s, a great time to be a guitar player. I would hope here to salute some of the great players of that era. Among this collection of songs, this was the easiest to write and play. But, ain't that the beauty of rock & roll?3.
