JOAO VOZ E VIOLAO won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album.
A US release of new material by bossa nova master Joao Gilberto is like the appearance of a comet. It doesn't happen often, and when it does you'd be wise to pay close attention. Nearly a decade separates JOAO VOZ E VIOLAO from its predecessor, and thankfully little seems to have changed. Gilberto's voice and guitar possess the same purity that made his early-'60s recordings so unforgettable. Caetano Veloso, one of many Brazilian artists strongly influenced by Gilberto, achieves a production masterstroke here by the simple act of putting the man in the studio with only his own guitar for company.
The result is the most directly affecting Joao Gilberto recording to reach American ears since bossa nova's heyday four decades prior. Unhampered by an intrusive string section or superflous studio players, Gilberto is free to pursue his quiet but forceful vision with undiluted focus. Nodding to his roots, he performs a couple of Jobim tunes, including the famed "Desafinado," and embraces the present by performing a number of Caetano Veloso compositions, even though these are clearly written with the classic bossa nova style in mind. JOAO VOZ E VIOLAO is the stuff of a Gilberto fan's dreams.
Recorded at Studio AR, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
Solo performer: Joao Gilberto (vocals, guitar).Rolling Stone (8/3/00, pp.56-8) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "...A series of whispered meditations on Brazilian popular music that lasts only 30 minutes yet feels like a full meal..." CMJ (6/12/00, p.3) - "...Proves that the essence of bossa nova is Joao Gilberto." Down Beat (11/00, pp.67-8) - 4.5 stars out of 5 - "...Sparse arrangements emphasize [his] new found edge while heightening the quiet majesty of his singing. [His] own syncopated guitar lines and complex chords are the ideal force to push his voice in different directions..." Joao Gilberto Joao Voz E Violao Songs Joao Voz E Violao Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Not bad. As the title adressed it, all songs are voice and guitar. It's enjoyable. Masterpiece Music doesn't get much purer than this: just Gilberto and his guitar, and a collection of captivating bossa meditations that soothe, beguile and seduce. This album is so beautiful: it takes you to a place beyond your troubles, where only the music matters. Submitted by Mr G (London) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Joao Voz E Violao songs
$10.09 Regrettably, male vocalists have become a minority in the jazz world. For every talented male jazz singer who emerged in the 1980s or 1990s (Kurt Elling, Kevin Mahogany, Lou Lanza, Giacomo Gates, Allan Harris, among others), there were countless female singers. So whenever a male jazz vocalist records a CD, one tends to sit up and take notice. Jim Ferguson's Deep Summer Music should please those who complain that jazz doesn't have enough male singers anymore. Much to his credit, the Nashville resident is a clone of no one. Ferguson is no innovator, but he is a recognizable singer who can be sweetly introspective one minute and bluesy the next. On funky, bluesy selections like "What's a Guy Supposed to Do?" and "Walkin' the Dog" (both ...

$26.49 For those who became acquainted with Nicola Conte via his Bossa Per Due and Jet Sounds Revisited, Other Directions will come as a real surprise. Along with being a producer and DJ, Conte is a classically trained musician who is a multi-instrumentalist and a very accomplished arranger. His previous work in the acid jazz and electronic bossa movements could not have prepared listeners for this solid jazz and bossa nova set. Working with a tough, top-notch group of Italian jazz players -- the country's jazz ...

Joao Voz E Violao CD music
$16.45 Finally, Stockholms best kept secret release their long awaited album and return with a vengeance! "Ace In The Hole" is "Demons" third studio album after 2002s "Stockholm Slump", and the first release since 2004s retrospective collections "Demonology", the double cd R!ot In Japan and the EP (Her Name Was) Tragedy from 2006."Ace In The Hole" will be a bit of a comeback for "Demons" after five years between proper fullength studio albums. It will also be the debut for the band as a trio. Here they have, with confidence, refined their passionate mix of punk rock, garage and power pop into something very personal.Working as a trio has allowed "Demons" to evolve and experiment without losing the edge. The songs have a more important role and the band has their patented energy intact. Influences that range from rhythm & blues, soul and country has been incorporated their own way."Demons" has often been in the shadow of, and undeservedly so, been compared to other contemporary rock bands in similar genres. More truthfully they been the inspirators rather than themselves been inspired by these. The members musical ...
