The late Ronnie Van Zant screams "ya shore got that right!" on the familiar leadoff track on this compilation. This Southern party anthem, along with "Gimme Three Steps" (a tale of bar room debauchery with a killer guitar lick), are the only two FM staples in this collection. So if you're seeking a single CD compilation from this legendary band but can't listen to "Freebird" one more time, look no further than DOUBLE TROUBLE.
The guitar triumvirate of Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, and Steve Gaines is featured on "One More Time", with its female background harmonies. "All I Can Do Is Write About It", from GIMME BACK MY BULLETS, is a beautiful backroad country-flavored ballad, complete with fiddle. "Am I Losin'," keeping things mellow and somber, features tight harmonies and is about the death of a best friend. The title track is foot-stomping honky-tonk with an impressive guitar arrangement. While the album's title is deceiving -- all but five of the 18 tracks on this double disc originate from the '90s, and 11 of those are from the same show -- this is an adequate, well-recorded document of both the original and re-formed versions of Foghat running through their established repertoire. It also works as a tribute to Lonesome Dave Peverett, the group's lead singer and primary songwriter, who died of cancer in February 2000, about a year after the most recent recording here. Since the band hit their peak in 1977 with their first live recording (a 1977 version of "I Ain't Got You" is this disc's oldest, tightest, and most succinct performance and might even be an outtake from that album), this can't help but be a retread. Still, the group retains most of their original lineup and their sweat-stained boogie-blues remains energetic enough, even though at over two hours, this is a bit much for all but the most dedicated. Mostly recorded live, much of Tourism, a worthy compilation of hits, misses, and new cuts, spotlights how strong an act they are even without the benefit of studio production. From the lead song, "How Do You Do!," a perfectly presented pop ditty, bright and sunny as summer, to a rejuvenated version of one of their biggest hits, "It Must Have Been Love" -- you have to hear 45,000 Chileans singing back-up to truly appreciate what was one of their least affecting ballads -- you come to appreciate what true pop craftsmanship is. A spare "Things Will Never Be the Same," on which the two share lead vocals with only the backing of an acoustic guitar, and the haunting, hopeful "Queen of Rain" are both so accomplished they should have been released as singles. As with their previous album, Joyride, there is very little filler on this disc; though "So Far Away" and "Here Comes the Weekend" are a bit routine, they are still well-crafted and well-presented ballads. Though initially recorded in the late '60s and early '70s, the tracks that make up Victoria's sole release didn't see wide release until nearly 30 years later, seeing a further re-release on Shadoks in 2005. Consisting of a small limited-edition album and a variety of further cuts from tape and acetate, Victoria's appeal lies perhaps most in the sextet's ability to get a lot out of limited resources.
