Polygram Records' budget imprint Rebound has released many compilations, and they often resemble mix tapes one might make; they aren't always tightly formatted into genres. The songs on 1997's No. 1 Hits of the 80's are all over the style map. The CD features 12 songs, two of which are bonus cuts. Classics of the era include Irene Cara's "Flashdance...What a Feeling" and Michael Sembello's "Maniac." Did Polygram realize that collecting these two songs on an inexpensive CD means that consumers now don't really have to buy the more expensive Flashdance soundtrack on its Casablanca label? The same principle applies for Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes' great ballad duet, "Up Where We Belong," from the An Officer and a Gentleman soundtrack, an Island release. Two other featured ballads are Chris DeBurgh's cloying "The Lady in Red" and Benny Mardones' soaring "Into the Night." Mardones' song is superb musically, but the lyrics are rather disturbing since the adult protagonist is warned about his obsessive love for a 16-year-old girl. New wave is represented by ABC's "The Look of Love" and Bananarama's poppier "Cruel Summer," while R&B tracks include Kool & the Gang's "Ladies Night" and -- brace yourself -- actor/"singer" Bruce Willis' cover of the Staple Singers' "Respect Yourself." Andy Gibb's final Top Ten hit, "Desire," appears here. The most "modern" song is "C'Mon and Get My Love" by Cathy Dennis with D-Mob. The real find on No. 1 Hits of the 80's is Charlie Dore's country-pop tune "Pilot of the Airwaves." This song just missed the Top Ten, and Dore -- a woman, by the way -- became another one-hit-wonder from the decade. The ABC and Dore songs are the CD-only bonus tracks. ~ Bret Adams

Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) 4 stars

4 stars For overs of 80's music
This is a great CD as it contains tracks hard to find on other compliation albums. I specifically bought this album for the song "Into the night" which I haven't been able to find anywhere. A few of the songs, ie Andy Gibb are a bit average, but overall its a good buy.

Poppa Steve Mutimer began his musical career at age 8 with his first set of drums. He took lessons from Benny Goodman’s noted big band drummer, Ray Mann, until age 12.At 15 he formed his first band, The Rhythm Kings, in hometown, Rockford, IL in 1958. The group was the first rock ‘n roll band in the city and became a huge local success for the next 3 years during high school. The Kings cut two records, both of which were regionally successful, with one tune, Maj, reaching the local Top 10 and earning a “bullet” in Billboard Magazine. After a stint in the US Navy, Steve formed his second band, The Daze & Knights, which became a back up road band for the William Morris Agency, Chicago office, working with their hit vocalists and vocal groups of the time such as The Four Tops, Bobby Goldsboro, The Chiffons, The Crystals, Jimmy Clanton, The Vogues, Brian Highland, Dee Dee Sharp, Len Barry, Dick & Dee Dee
to name a few. This group lasted from 1965 to 1968.Leaving the road after 3 years and newly married, Steve went to work in local radio in Rockford and played drums in an immensely popular club band, The Exceptions, in South Beloit, Wisconsin until the mid 70s when he finally hung up his sticks. For the next 30 years, Steve owned his own advertising agency in Rockford and later San Diego where he wrote and produced hundreds of musical scores for client jingles, AV shows and television programs. One of his scores won a TV EMMY for best music composition. Finally Steve retired from the ad biz and moved to Arizona. With the advent of new musical digital technology over the past several years he furthered his musical skills even more by doing his own composing, programming and editing for personal pleasure. This “hobby” led to thirteen CDs so far, produced over the past 4 years. Still getting better (after all these years) combining computer generated tracks, pre-recorded loops, and live musicians (particularly stepson, DG Mattingley, on guitars), Steve hopes to continue producing “feel good” music for new found fans, friends, and his own enjoyment. What Radio Says
I have just received your wonderful CD, "The Good Stuff and glad I did as we had a great groove happening in our office ...
