Audio Remixer: Philip Kelsey. Editors: Pete Lungo; John Luongo. Photographer: Pete Ashworth. Although it doesn't have any traits that distinguish it from the glut of '90s disco compilations, Pure Disco 2 is an entertaining collection of familiar disco items that makes for a good party album. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine On PURE DISCO 2 every blessed cut is a quintessential disco anthem of great magnitude. In fact, without the hits compiled here, there would be no disco! You get 20-count-em-20 of the glorious genre's most definitive soul-strutting symphonies. You've got your Vicki Sue, your Gloria Gaynor, Sister Sledge, Barry White, Diana Ross...it's Disco heaven with Donna Summer at the pearly gates, twirling under that great mirror ball in the sky. The big bouncy beat, slick soaring strings and happy, hopeful lyrics pull you into the exalted experience that was the Decade of Dance. If you have known the pleasure of the platform, you will squeal with delight as your whole night-life flash-dances before you. If you have, alas, never sported skin-tight Sergio Valentes, only PURE DISCO 2 can reliably serve as your true beacon of Boogie. This 20-karat collection also features a bonus track "Diva Megamix," that covers selections from the stellar spectrum of Solid Gold Goddesses. PURE DISCO 2 will Rock Your Boat, and Ring Your Bell as only divine disco can. Pure Disco 2
$15.35 Garbage: Shirley Manson (vocals); Butch Vig, Duke Erikson, Steve Marker. Additional personnel: Jon J. Vriesacker (violin); Michael Masley (cymbalom); Daniel Shulman (bass); Todd Malcolm Michiles (scratches). Recorded at Smart Studios, Madison, Wisconsin. VERSION 2.0 was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Album Of The Year and Best Rock Album. "Special" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. "Special" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. Neither a flat-out retread nor a full-fledged progression, Version 2.0 is almost too accurate a title for Garbage's second album. Everything that made Garbage a success is here -- Shirley Manson's seductive strength, strong pop sensibility, a production that falls halfway between alternative rock and techno -- presented in a slightly newer form. Version 2.0 may be gilded with fresh drum loops and shiny, computerized ...
| | Van Halen 5150 CD (1986)
Pure Disco 2
$9.39 Van Halen: Sammy Hagar, Eddie Van Halen (vocals, guitar); Michael Anthony (vocals, bass); Alex Van Halen (drums). Recorded at 5150 Studios, Hollywood, California. The power struggle within Van Halen was often painted as David Lee Roth's ego running out of control -- a theory that was easy enough to believe given his outsized charisma -- but in retrospect, it seems evident that Eddie Van Halen wanted respect to go along with his gargantuan fame, and Roth wasn't willing to play. Bizarrely enough, Sammy Hagar -- the former Montrose lead singer who had carved out a successful solo career -- was ready to play, possibly because the Red Rocker was never afraid of being earnest, nor was he afraid of synthesizers, for that matter. There was always the lingering suspicion that, yes, Sammy truly couldn't drive 55, and that's why he wrote the song, and that kind of forthright rocking is evident on the strident anthems of 5150. From the moment the album opens with the crashing "Good Enough," it's clearly the work of the same ...

$11.99 Photographer: Pete Ashworth. Pure Disco contains 12" mixes and remixes of classic dance and disco songs from the late '70s, including "I Love the Nightlife," "I Will Survive," "Celebration," "That's the Way (I Like It)," "Funkytown," "YMCA," and "Dancing Queen." Though there are a few original versions of these singles on the disc, most of it is comprised of remixes, which are simply adequate, with the noticeable exception of "The Grease Megamix."
