On AT THE DEER HEAD INN, pianist Keith Jarrett returns to the very club in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania that supported him during his formative years as a music student. Jarrett plays seven standards on this disc, and each tune highlights his inimitable stream-of-consciousness approach to improvisation. Although Jarrett's longtime cohort, drummer Jack DeJohnette, does not appear on this album, Paul Motian fills in wonderfully and forms a remarkable rhythm section with bassist Gary Peacock.
There are many fine moments on this record. For example, the languid, tear-stained ballad "You Don't Know What Love Is" takes on new light with this ensemble. Here, the listener is whisked away to another world and entranced by many musical transformations in the song's nearly 13-minute run, including a couple of groove variations and plenty of harmonic diversions. However, it's always great to hear Jarrett really burn in a straight-ahead fashion, and "You and the Night and the Music" is just the track to satisfy such cravings.
Recorded at The Deer Head Inn, Allentown, Pennsylvania on September 16, 1992. Includes liner notes by Keith Jarrett.
Personnel: Keith Jarrett (piano, keyboards); Gary Peacock (bass); Paul Motian (drums).

At The Deer Head Inn CD music
$21.55 Trio Beyond is the name of the group that played at Queen Elizabeth's Hall in London, 2004. Jack DeJohnette initiated a project to pay tribute to the late Tony Williams' Lifetime -- with the late Larry Young on organ and guitarist John McLaughlin, all three were Miles alumni -- a band that, along with the Miles Davis band, spearheaded the jazz-rock fusion era. DeJohnette replaced Williams in the Davis group, and John Scofield is also a Miles alumnus; Larry Goldings had been approached by Williams in 1997 to put together an organ trio with a similar concept to Lifetime; Williams passed away shortly thereafter. The results on this double-disc album, Saudades, are explosive, dynamic, and utterly compelling. The repertoire comes from Lifetime's songbook. Spectrum: The Anthology and the intense stunner of a set closer "Emergency" come from the band's debut album ...

$14.49 Recorded live at Festival De Jazz d' Antibes, Juan Les Pins, France on July 16, 2002. Includes liner notes by Keith Jarrett.
"Butch & Butch" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo.
According to Keith Jarrett's ultimately uplifting liner notes, this live recording is one that very nearly did not happen. Apparently, it does not typically rain much or often in July on France's Cote d'Azur. However, in 2002, the sun did not shine for several days running there and the (outdoor) Festival de Jazz ...

At The Deer Head Inn album
$15.95 Although Glenn Miller & His Orchestra get first billing on this two-CD set, 25 of the 35 selections are features for the Andrews Sisters. The music is taken from the earliest Glenn Miller Chesterfield Broadcasts, shows that had the always-cheerful Andrews Sisters as the regular guests. After March 1940, it was decided that Miller (whose band had become the most popular in the country) was too much of a big name to have to share his show with anyone. But ...

At The Deer Head Inn songs
$13.29 BOB CHEEVERS:Americana's Master StorytellerBy PHIL SWEETLANDCountry music & Radio stringer, The New York TimesBob says, "I don't know if these stories are true...but they happened to me".Upon listening to Bob Cheevers' story songs like "Me And Dan And The Spoonman" or "The Soul Of Savannah" on his delightful new CD Texas To Tennessee, I'm struck by the fact that this guy shares a similar last name with one of America's great modern short story writers, the late John Cheever.Few folks know the work of John Cheever (1912-82), the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of short stories in which he delineates, in clear, elegant, and frequently lyrical prose, the drama and sadness of life in comfortable suburban America. Bob Cheevers' characters are more rural than John Cheever's suburban ones and the singer-songwriter's haunting voice adds a dimension unavailable to the great short story writer. But the two are equally honest and captivating in their work.Polygram's John Tita once said, "Bob Cheevers is the New Mark Twain and the Great American Writer." The widely admired music journalist Bill Ellis of Tennessee's top newspaper, The Memphis Commercial Appeal, wrote of Cheevers, a Memphis native "Bob Cheevers has a Delta heart and an acerbic tongue, giving his music an honesty about the South rarely touched on by any other artist in the contemporary music scene."Cheevers left Memphis for LA in the mid-1960s after attending college. In Hollywood he scored a solo artist deal first with Dot Records, and then met up with Dan Dalton, a record producer who recruited Bob for a group called The Peppermint Trolley Company. Anyone of a certain age who remembers the ABC-TV sketch comedy program "Love, American Style," with the fireworks display opening, knows some of Bob's early work, because The Peppermint Trolley Company sang the program's upbeat theme. But while Dalton was pulling Bob to the commercial ...
