Personnel: Gary Peacock (acoustic bass); Ralph Towner (classical & acoustic 12-string guitars). Recorded at Rainbow Studio, Oslo, Norway in May 1993. Personnel: Gary Peacock (double bass); Ralph Towner (guitar, electric 12-string guitar, 12-string guitar, classical guitar). Recording information: Rainbow Studio, Oslo, Norway (05/1993). Photographer: Jim Bengston. One of Gary Peacock's finest latter-day albums, ORACLE finds the revered jazz bassist paired with guitarist Ralph Towner for an excellent acoustic ECM outing. Although the percussion-less songs here are spare and often delicate, they are far from "easy listening," with both Peacock and Towner mixing thoughtful and melodic passages with occasional flurries of frenetic playing, as on the restless opener, "Gaya." This set of duets by bassist Gary Peacock and guitarist Ralph Towner, as one might expect from an ECM album, makes expert use of space and has its quiet moments. But there is a surprising amount of ferocious interplay between the two musicians. They may play at a consistently low volume, but the set of originals has a few rather passionate grooves and a little more energy than one would have predicted. ~ Scott Yanow
