1999's A LONG TIME AGO continues Kenny Wheeler's explorations with larger ensembles. His core trio (John Taylor on piano and John Parricelli on guitar, with Wheeler on flugelhorn), is augmented here with an eight-piece brass section.
Wheeler's writing has always been the perfect fit for these regal arrangements, even on his bracing small combo works like GNU HIGH and DEER WAN. His compositional breadth is stunning, as he moves gracefully from the elegant balladry of the title suite to the classically themed "Going for Baroque." In this highly emotive set, the slow tempos Wheeler favors are rich with meditative layers.

HAUNTED, Poe's second release, is a concept album inspired by some recordings she found of her late father's speaking voice. Poe sampled those recordings and incorporated them into a narrative that's ostensibly about her feelings for and relationship with her father. The more you listen, though, the clearer it becomes that HAUNTED is an album about the big issues that affect all of humanity (life, death, family). The effect of the dead man's voice framed by Poe's eclectic arrangements (rock, hip-hop, electronica and more) is an eerie one, but there's enough thematic consistency and solid songwriting here to make the album a powerful statement rather than just an exercise in nostalgic melancholy.
She appeared in the mid 1990's, riding a wave of female singer/songwriters that invaded the pop scene in the wake of the dominance of grunge. Her music is described as 'folk-hop', generating comparisons to the sound of Portishead. This edition includes the single "Wild" and a bonus track, 'Hey Pretty (Drive By 2001 Mix).
