Pat Metheny Group: Pat Metheny (synthesizer, guitar, Synclavier); Lyle Mays (piano, synthesizer, autoharp, organ, Synclavier); Steve Rodby (acoustic & electric basses); Dan Gottlieb (drums). Additional personnel: Nana Vasconcelos (percussion, vocals, berimbau). Engineers: Jan Erik Kongshaug, Gragg Lunsford. Recorded at Power Station, New York, New York in October 1981. If 1980's As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls was defined by Pat Metheny's charisma, its less accessible but certainly rewarding successor, Offramp, finds him leaning more toward the abstract. But as cerebral as Metheny gets on such atmospheric pieces as "Are You Going with Me?" and "Au Lait," his playing remains decidedly lyrical and melodic. Clearly influenced by Jim Hall, the thoughtful Metheny makes excellent use of space, choosing his notes wisely and reminding listeners that, while he has heavy-duty chops, he's not one to beat everybody over the head with them. Even when he picks up the tempo for the difficult and angular title song, he shuns empty musical acrobatics. Throughout the CD, Metheny enjoys a powerful rapport with keyboardist Lyle Mays, who also avoids exploiting his technique and opts for meaningful storytelling. ~ Alex Henderson Opening with some beautiful synclavier and Lyle Mays' exquisite soaring synths on 'Barcarole', this is an atmosphere album. It moves from delicacy to beauty and is arguably the most complete album of his incredible career. The delightful 'James' (a tribute to James Taylor, listen to the guitar inflections) is complemented by the awesome 'Au Lait'; and if that was not enough, this contains surely Metheny's finest moment, 'Are You Going With Me', a song that builds and builds over the most fabulous rhythm, and even after nearly nine minutes it leaves you begging for more. A stunning piece of music that is neither jazz nor rock. Includes liner notes by Gary Burton. Pat Metheny's debut studio album is a good one, a trio date that finds him already laying down the distinctively cottony, slightly withdrawn tone and asymmetrical phrasing that would serve him well through most of the swerves in direction ahead. His original material, all of it lovely, bears the bracing ...

$12.69 A pianist, arranger & producer, Barry Sames is a "musician's musician" who articulates familiar feelings with an extraordinary jazz artistry that speaks of life and love. Barry has explored the world of jazz-fusion, co-founding an original five-piece band INSYNK in the early 90s. The band recorded and performed in the Philadelphia and New York area up until 1996. In that same period, Barry brought his jazz music into the church, composing and arranging for jazz vespers concerts in both local and national U.S. church settings. A few years later, his ensemble was selected to perform for the national Lutheran Churchwide Assembly. ...

Photographers: Tim Kent; Lasse Hoile. Porcupine Tree's first album for K-Scope/Snapper starts out with a definite bang -- "Even Less," with some of the quartet's biggest, blasting rock epic music yet, yet also shot through with the gentler, acoustic side that makes Porcupine Tree so intimate and lovely. The net result easily calls Yes to mind, but Steven Wilson's not so high-pitched as Jon Anderson and Richard Barbieri completely avoids Rick Wakeman's extreme idiocies -- prog that knows when less is more. With that as a fine signal for the album as a whole, Stupid Dream takes it from there -- Wilson as a songwriter and singer both sounds recharged and more ambitious, while the group collectively pours it on. The loud passages feel truly sky-smashing, the calmer ones perfectly close, and the overall sense of build and drama -- "A Smart Kid" is a fine example -- spot-on.
