Pat Metheny Group: Pat Metheny (6- & 12-string guitars); Lyle Mays (autoharp, piano, synthesizer); Mark Egan (bass); Dan Gottlieb (drums). Recorded at Talent Studio, Oslo, Norway in January 1978. Personnel: Pat Metheny (guitar, electric 12-string guitar, 12-string guitar); Lyle Mays (autoharp, piano, keyboards, synthesizer, Oberheim synthesizer); Mark Egan (electric bass); Dan Gottlieb (drums, snare drum); Danny Gottlieb (drums). Recording information: Talent Studio, Oslo, Norway (01/1978). Photographer: Roberto Masotti. The first recording by the Pat Metheny Group features the innovative guitarist along with keyboardist Lyle Mays, bassist Mark Egan, and drummer Dan Gottlieb. The music is quite distinctive, floating rather than swinging, electric but not rockish, and full of folkish melodies. The best known of these six Metheny-Mays originals are "Phase Dance" and "Jaco." This music grows in interest with each listen. ~ Scott Yanow Guitarist Pat Metheny's atmospheric, "smooth" (when that word didn't carry ugly connotations) jazz was just about ready to set the world afire when this Pat Metheny Group effort hit the racks. Metheny's was one of the tighter outfits in modern jazz when this eponymous album was released in 1978 on ECM, the label that really mattered for them in the '70s. The Group's idiosyncratic blending of folk, blues stylings, improv spaciness, and supple rock underpinnings were unlike anything then happening in jazz. The opener, "San Lorenzo," establishes the mood. Ten-plus minutes of shimmering cymbals pierce a veil of stark bass, luminescent synthesizer motifs, and, of course, Metheny's resolutely gorgeous six- and 12-string picking. The music refracts differing hues in a prismatic puzzle. Sparse and beautiful. Pat Metheny Group Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Great CD This is Pat M third cd and itīs from 1978 and a milestone in itīs own time.
Almost 30 years later the cd is just as good. High quality guitar jazz all instrumental.I canīt think of anything better if you like Pat M. Submitted by claesrunbalk (Gothenburgh Sweden) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful.
The Pat Metheny Group this cd is,in my view, one of the most brilliant collection of songs in all of jazz. I feel this is Metheny's most lasting and enjoyable pieces of work. I bought this as a vinyl in 1970's when it came out and was completely blown away by the freshest sounds I had heard in years. It still is... Jazz Ambrosia! One of my all time favorites recordings regardless of genre. Intensely involving from start to finish. The finest work by pianist Lyle Mays I know of. Submitted by a reviewer (Beavercreek, OH) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Got it all It wasn't enough that Mr. Metheny comes out with Bright Size Life and Watercolors, painting a picture of guitar-driven Jazz which was unlike just about anything else, and creating a musical interplay with Jaco Pastorius which has barely been matched since, AND establishing a partnership with Lyle Mays which still continues to produce musical velvet - what would you do next? He follows these two albums up with this masterpiece, which I feel hits it's stride on every single tune - not the easiest thing to do considering how varied in style the selections are. But that has always been one of Metheny's strengths for sure.
There are few recorded moments in music I enjoy more than the climax of "Phase Dance" modulating it's way through a series of hypnotically rhythmic progressions, and teasing you by holding back just when you feel the music will explode (or maybe that's just me & my excitement), or the addicting happyfunk guitar riff which kicks off "Jaco." It's just a wonderfully honest and superbly crafted album which sounds inspired - and that really is what all albums should be. Thanks Pat! Might be the best jazz album ever Thirty years after its release, this still sounds fresh, alive, crisp and will give you chills. These four superb musicians are "in the pocket." Along with Blood, Sweat & Tears second album (God Bless the Child) and George Benson's "Breezin" album, you can't find better music and better drumming. Listen and learn !! Enjoy. Pat Metheny Group
$13.59 Pat Metheny Group: Pat Metheny (synthesizer, guitar, Synclavier); Lyle Mays (piano, synthesizer, autoharp, organ, Synclavier); Steve Rodby (acoustic & electric basses); Dan Gottlieb (drums). Additional personnel: Nana Vasconcelos (percussion, vocals, berimbau). Engineers: Jan Erik Kongshaug, Gragg Lunsford. Recorded at Power Station, New York, New York in October 1981. If 1980's As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls was defined by Pat Metheny's charisma, its less accessible but certainly rewarding successor, Offramp, finds him leaning more toward the abstract. But as cerebral as Metheny gets on such atmospheric pieces as "Are You Going with Me?" and "Au Lait," his playing remains decidedly lyrical and melodic. Clearly influenced by Jim Hall, the thoughtful Metheny makes excellent use of space, choosing his ...

| | Pat Metheny Bright Size Life CD (1975)
Pat Metheny Group
$14.49 Personnel: Pat Metheny (electric & 12-string guitars); Jaco Pastorius (bass); Bob Moses (drums). Recorded at Tonstudio Bauer, Ludwigsburg, Germany in December 1975. Includes liner notes by Gary Burton. Pat Metheny's debut studio album is a good one, a trio date that finds him already laying down the distinctively cottony, slightly withdrawn tone and asymmetrical phrasing that would serve him well through most of the swerves in direction ahead. His original material, all of it lovely, bears the bracing air of his Midwestern upbringing, with titles like "Missouri Uncompromised," "Midwestern Nights Dream," and "Omaha Celebration." There is also a sole harbinger of radical matters way down the road with the inclusion of a loose-jointed treatment of Ornette Coleman's "Round Trip/Broadway Blues," proving that Song X did not come from totally out of the blue. Besides the debut of Metheny, this CD also features one of the earliest recordings of Jaco Pastorius, a fully formed, well-matched contrapuntal force on electric bass, though content to leave the spotlight mostly to Metheny. Bob Moses, who ...
| | Pat Metheny Watercolors CD (1977)
Pat Metheny Group
$14.59 Personnel: Pat Metheny (guitar, 12-string guitar, 15-string harpguitar); Lyle Mays (piano); Eberhard Weber (bass); Dan Gottlieb (drums). Recorded at Talent Studios, Oslo, Norway in February 1977. Pat Metheny emerges on his second album, Watercolors, as an ECM impressionist, generally conforming to the label's overall sound while still asserting his own personality. As the title suggests, there are several mood pieces here that are suspended in the air without rhythmic underpinning, a harbinger for the new age invasion still in the future. Metheny's softly focused, asymmetrical guitar style, with echoes of apparent influences as disparate as Jim Hall, George Benson, Jerry Garcia, and various country guitarists, is quite distinctive even at this early juncture. Metheny's long-running partnership with keyboardist Lyle Mays also begins here, with Mays mostly on acoustic piano but also providing a few mild synthesizer washes. Danny Gottlieb is on drums, and ECM regular Eberhard Weber handles the bass. ...
| | Louis Armstrong Mack The Knife CDs (1990) (Import) Box Set; Netherlands
Pat Metheny Group
$22.35 Personnel: Louis Armstrong (vocals, trumpet); Trummy Young (vocals, trombone); Edmund Hall (clarinet); Billy Kyle (piano); Squire Gersh (bass); Barrett Deems (drums). Recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, Rhode Island on July 4, 1957. Includes liner notes by Stanley Dance. Digitally remastered by George Horn (Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). The triple CD collection MACK THE KNIFE brings together 40 classic tracks from legendary jazzman Louis Armstrong. This collection is a mixed bag of live recordings, made towards the end of the trumpeter Louis Armstrong's long and illustrious career, including his popular versions of "Hello Dolly" and "Mack the Knife," as well as Dixieland staples such as "St. Louis Blues" and "New Orleans Stomp." This Laserlight compilation features a slim list of some of trumpeter/vocalist Louis Armstrong's most well-known recordings. Included are such classics as "Hello Dolly," "A Kiss to Build a Dream On," and "Just a Gigolo." While the budget price is always welcome, this really isn't the place to start with Armstrong and even casual listeners would do well to seek out a more broadly definitive release. ~ Matt Collar Before his appearance at the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival, Louis Armstrong learned that the promoters planned to shunt aside his regular band in favor of a group of his historical associates. Never a pushover and always protective of his sidemen, Armstrong threw a major temper tantrum that resulted in his regular show going ...
