| | Steve Swallow Carla CD Steve Swallow Discography of CDs
The Carla of this 1987 album's title is Carla Bley. She and Steve Swallow have worked together regularly over the years, first in her assorted musical projects and then in a personal relationship as well. They have also recorded a couple of duo albums, 1988's DUETS and 1993's GO TOGETHER in 1993. The ensemble for CARLA's eight compositions by the bass players is the same as on Bley's concurrent SEXTET album. This was her regular working band of the time, augmented here with a trio of string players.
A warm sophistication pervades the proceedings, with Bley's organ swirling around the Swallow's electric bass, the piano of Larry Willis, and the guitar of Hiram Bullock. Swallow, who set aside the string bass to explore the possibilities of the electric bass guitar in the early '70s, has been a rich and inventive composer since the sixties. With the strings adding further color, CARLA is a fine starting point for those looking to explore his work.
Recorded at Grog Kill Studio, Willow, New York in the winter of 1986-87.
Personnel: Steve Swallow (bass, synthesizer); Ida Kavafian (violin); Ik-Hwan Bae (viola); Fred Sherry (cello); Larry Willis (piano); Carla Bley (organ, synthesizer); Hiram Bullock (guitar); Victor Lewis (drums); Don Alias (percussion).

Carla album
$14.29 Subtitled UNFINISHED MUSIC NO. 1, this was the first of a series of recordings that were released near the beginning of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's relationship. Ono, a member of the Fluxus art movement, was a respected artist and had been producing pieces in non-traditional media (sound, video, conceptual) throughout the '60s--in fact she met Lennon when he came to one of her gallery exhibitions. With the Beatles in often-fractious circumstances at that time, Lennon poured his energies into collaborations with her.
The two long pieces which comprise the bulk of this CD were originally a side each of a vinyl record (the bonus track, a lovely song called "Remember Love," was the B-side to their "Give Peace a Chance" single). They're both sound collages which incorporate found sounds, bits of other recordings, some keyboards and other instruments, as well as Lennon and Ono variously talking and vocalizing. This was the public's first glimpse of Yoko's particular style of singing which included whoops, warbles, and shrieks. The verbal exchanges between the couple are often quite charming and amusing.
At the time of its release, this duo album by John Lennon and Yoko ...
| | Gary Burton Ring CD (1974)
Carla CD music
$15.55 Emerging as a precocious teenager from the sticks of Indiana, Gary Burton took the worlds of both country music and jazz by storm in the early '60s, recording with Boots Randolph, Hank Garland and Stan Getz. Young Burton emerged as a stylistic alternative to vibes innovator Milt Jackson, employing his prodigious double mallet technique to create a rich harmonic palette and a freer style of phrasing that suggested the melodic breakthroughs of Bill Evans.
As a leader, Gary Burton has seldom received credit for his role in fomenting the electric jazz revolution of the 1960s, when improvisational and pop sources began to intermingle. Burton's TENNESSEE FIREBIRD, COUNTRY ROADS and THROB were provocative fusions of country and jazz, while his seminal DUSTER added free form, psychedelic rock and blues sources to the equation. Still, all people seem to remember from that period are Miles Davis and his offspring. Yet here is Burton in the summer of 1974, teaming up with producer Manfred Eicher to lead one of his most visionary bands, and the sound ...
| | Flora Purim That's What She Said CD (1977)
Carla music CDs
$9.89 Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (2001 Fantasy Studios).
Toward the close of her Milestone years, Flora Purim teamed up with producer/keyboardist George Duke -- and the imprint of Duke, then entering his funkified "Dukey Stick" period, is heavy enough to dominate the record. Very often, Duke uses his then rhythm section of bassist Byron Miller (alternating with Alphonso Johnson) and drummer Ndugu Chandler to give the grooves a definite '70s funk feel -- and percussionist Airto adapts his talents seamlessly to this way of life. Duke's electronic keyboard arsenal is all over the record, occasionally going gonzo on the Moog synthesizer, draping a then-still-fashionable ARP string synthesizer over the landscape, comping on the Rhodes electric piano or Yamaha electric grand. Joe Henderson turns up with a funk-bop tenor solo on the Brazilian/funk groove on "What Can I Say?" (what could he say?), part of a first-call L.A. studio horn section that includes ...
| | Funkadelic Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow CD (1970) Remastered
Carla songs
$12.29 Funkadelic's self-titled debut may have touched upon drug-induced acid rock, but on their 1970 follow-up, FREE YOUR MIND AND YOUR ASS WILL FOLLOW, the band blows the door off its hinges. Look no further than the album-opening ten-minute title track--perhaps the most spaced out composition witnessed by rock & roll since the Rolling Stones' late-'60s psychedelic-phase--for the proof. Funkadelic is still a step away from perfecting its funk-rock craft. This album is hindered by very treble-heavy production, a sonic approach very unlike the group's future bass-indulgent works.
FREE YOUR MIND AND YOUR ASS WILL FOLLOW is one of Funkadelic's shortest albums, at barely over a half-hour in length. But the one-dimensional production proves even more frustrating. There's plenty of sonic experimentation going on within each composition, but it's all but impossible to decipher. ...
| | Miles Davis Broadcast Sessions: 1958-1959 CD (2008)
Carla album
$11.49 Many musicians lived and were musically active during multiple jazz periods, and some of them actually made significant contributions during all of the periods during which they recorded. But few can claim, as Miles Davis could, to have actually helped design the architecture in every case. Bebop, cool, and fusion all have Davis' handprints deep in the cement of their foundations, and this disc documents some of his best work during the second of those periods. In the mid-'50s he started what would be a tumultuous musical relationship with John Coltrane, and what would eventually become one of the greatest combos in jazz history began to coalesce: alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones in addition to Davis and Coltrane. The tracks on this CD were selected from four live-in-the-studio recordings made by Davis' combo shortly after the sessions for the Milestones LP were completed, and it features burning renditions of such period favorites ...

Carla CD music
$10.15 This is Rory’s first studio album and was definitely a challenge to sing in many different keys. This is what gives this album its uniqueness and to combine musical genres. Rory is hoping that fans would discover a new voice and rhythm to intoxicate the soul. There is bluesy seductiveness, and pop/rock melodies that reflect the secret of the soul.Rory dedicated the third song on the album “ I will Love You Forever” to his uncle Ricknauth Jagarnauth who was a September 11 victim. This song is from the point of view of Rick to give comfort to all those that knew him especially his family. He was Rory’s mother third brother. His death was a devastated experience to all that knew him.On “You Belong To Me,” he shows his love for the Blues with a new style and tried to incorporate the romantic side of the Blues with lyrics to intoxicate the senses.
