Originally released as two seperate LPs. Personnel: Pat Metheny (guitar); Dewey Redman, Michael Brecker (tenor saxophone); Charlie Haden (acoustic bass); Jack DeJohnette (drums). Recorded at Talent Studios, Oslo, Norway from May 26-29, 1980. Personnel: Pat Metheny (guitar, acoustic guitar); Michael Brecker (saxophone, tenor saxophone); Dewey Redman (tenor saxophone); Jack DeJohnette (drums, snare drum, cymbals). Recording information: Talent Studio, Oslo, Norway (05/26/1980-05/29/1980); Talent Studios, Oslo, Norway (05/26/1980-05/29/1980). Photographers: Rainer Drechsler; Dag Alveng. Unknown Contributor Role: Rainer Drechsler. Pat Metheny's credibility with the jazz community went way up with the release of this package, a superb two-CD collaboration with a quartet of outstanding jazz musicians that dared to be uncompromising at a time when most artists would have merely continued pursuing their electric commercial successes. From the disbanded Keith Jarrett American quartet came bassist Charlie Haden and tenor Dewey Redman -- who alternates with and occasionally plays alongside tenor Michael Brecker -- and Jack DeJohnette provides more combustible drumming than Metheny had ever experienced on record before. Yet Metheny's off-kilter wandering on solo electric guitar is a comfortable fit for the post-bop rhythmic crosscurrents of this music. Indeed, Haden and Metheny are in total sympathy, perhaps celebrating their mutual Missouri roots, and Metheny's difficult "Pretty Scattered" -- which he mockingly described as "Guitar Revenge!" -- nearly manages to stump even Redman and Brecker. The first of the "Two Folk Songs" is a great example of the Metheny folk-jazz fusion, with furious strummed guitar underpinning Brecker's melodic line and excursions on the outside and DeJohnette's spectacular drums. Another remarkable track is "Open," a group improvisation that finds DeJohnette shaping the track's direction with a pushing solo and Metheny and the saxes emerging at the end. The two original LPs were organized so that the more distinctive Metheny fusions were on sides one and four and the overt jazz tracks occupied sides two and three. ~ Richard S. Ginell 80/81 Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Very Fine Album This early Pat double CD is not the group sound many have come to associate with Pat Metheny, rather it is one of those ECM gems that embraces both traditional jazz and that eclecticism that ECM is well-known for. The presence of Dewey Redman and Mike Brecker on sax removes the recording from the various trio formats Pat has shone in, and the blend of acoustic and electric guitar playing makes for a very rich experience indeed. A defining moment While the overall tone and mood of this set is positive(hard to find fault) there is one cut that is light years above and beyond, one so wonderful in it's joy that it needs to be heard just because it exists.
"Everyday I Thank You" is just one of those life defining tunes that will resonates in your soul. Buy it for that alone. Submitted by Dhale (Western Ma.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
MUST HAVE! This recording is in my top ten of "must have" music. It is sublime on all levels. From the beautiful, emotive guitar-work of Pat Metheny, to the essential bass of Charlie Hayden and tenor sax of Dewey Redman and Michael Brecker. And perhaps the highlight of the recording is the intricate yet effortless drumming of Jack DeJohnette. It stands out throughout the recordings, even prompting one of the artists to exclaim at the tail-end of the recording session of one of their songs, "Whooooieee, man, Jack DeJohnette!" You will treasure this albumn forever! Submitted by JG (Anytown, UT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$14.49 Personnel: Pat Metheny (electric & 12-string guitars); Jaco Pastorius (bass); Bob Moses (drums). Recorded at Tonstudio Bauer, Ludwigsburg, Germany in December 1975. Includes liner notes by Gary Burton. Pat Metheny's debut studio album is a good one, a trio date that finds him already laying down the distinctively cottony, slightly withdrawn tone and asymmetrical phrasing that would serve him well through most of the swerves in direction ahead. His original material, all of it lovely, bears the bracing air of his Midwestern upbringing, with titles like "Missouri Uncompromised," "Midwestern Nights ...

Audio Mixers: Jeff Juliano ; John Alagia; Josh Kelley; Mark Jackson. Recording information: Oxford, MS; Soundfile Studios; The Crab Trap, Easton, MD; The Jungle Room, Burbank, CA. Josh Kelley won't be able to outrun the John Mayer comparisons. For the Ride Home, the young Mississippian's easygoing Hollywood debut, was helmed by John Alagia, the guy behind Mayer's Room for Squares and the Dave Matthews Band's Crash, among others. Kelley sports a similar flair for phrasing and first-person confession, too, especially on "Angeles" and "Travelin'." Ride Home also tends slightly toward the bland -- "I Saw You" is like a highway exit with 14 enticing yet utterly homogenous fast-food offerings. Thankfully, dollops of Kelley's homespun charm keep things interesting. Opener and lead single "Amazing" is an upbeat, dizzy number warmed by Kelley's husky expressive vocals and an organ solo. The song's similarity to Jason Mraz' "Remedy (I Won't Worry)" isn't surprising -- Alagia produced that one, too. But that's all right. For the Ride Home ends up succeeding for some of the same reasons Mraz and Mayer did -- like them, Kelley has a disheveled friendliness that's hard to resist. He's a top-shelf, road-trip conversationalist, looks great ...
