The title might seem arrogant, but Eric Alexander doesn't presume to be anything more than he is--a very talented tenor player at the top of his game. The saxophonist here expertly demonstrates his abilities, along with those of his former boss, organist Charles Earland, and his longtime associates Jim Rotondi, Joe Farnsworth, and Peter Bernstein. Alexander continues to prove both muscular and agile, sporting a robust, tastefully lyrical tone, while also occasionally summoning passages of explosive energy.
The session holds many refreshing surprises, most notable being the lack of hackneyed standards, save for a very relaxed read of the classic "God Bless The Child." In addition, two rearranged contemporary pop tunes appear in the form of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together," featuring an indomitable mid-tempo snap, and Chaka Khan's hit "Through the Fire," which here becomes a funky little bossa nova. In addition, Alexander's "Burner's Waltz" and the fiery "Explosion" offer ample opportunity for the quintet to stretch out. Other impressive tracks include a tasteful swing through Fletcher Henderson's "Soft Winds" and Bernstein's soulful funk groove "Carrot Cake."
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on May 8, 1997. Includes liner notes by Larry Hollis.

| | David Hazeltine Classic Trio Meets Eric Alexander CD (2002)
Alexander The Great
$13.79 Pianist David Hazeltine and tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander create sparks when working together, and the presence of bassist Peter Washington and drummer Louis Hayes makes their chemistry even better on this 2001 studio session. Hazeltine's hard bop opener, "On the Boulevard," has the kind of attractive groove one would expect in a classic Blue Note date from the early '60s. The leader also wrote the catchy "Jessica's Night"; the saxophonist ...
| | Eric Alexander Summit Meeting CD (2002)
Alexander The Great
$12.49 This strong set documents the continuing and developing ties between Alexander and Harold Mabern; as the saxophonist unleashes his full-bodied, Coltrane-like tone on a set of originals and unlikely standards, Mabern's restless support unifies and galvanizes the rhythm section. At times, the pianist is a little too busy; there are passages in, for example, "There but for the Grace of..." where he might have laid out for a while, especially to give air to the segue between solos by Alexander and guest trumpeter Nicholas Payton. And repetitious left-hand comps ...

| | Bobby Shew Trumpet Summit CD (1995)
Alexander The Great
$13.35 Recorded live at the International Brassfest, Indiana University, Indiana on June 2, 1995.
TRUMPET SUMMIT includes biographic liner notes for each of the title performers.
A trumpeter's delight, this recording features three leading modern mainstream trumpet players in an old fashioned jam. Vincent DiMartino, Allen Vizutti, and Bobby Shew may be a bit slick for some tastes, but there is no denying their technical virtuosity. What makes this stand out from the crowd is the visceral excitement that erupts as these three run through such gems as "It's Only a Paper Moon," and "All the Things You Are." The latter is brought to modern life by the wonderfully ...
