Nearly all the songs in Wesla Whitfield's CD of songs by Rodgers and Hart (or Hart and Rodgers, as she prefers to emphasize the considerable gifts of the lyricist) have been recorded countless times by jazz singers, not even tabulating similar songbooks devoted to one of Broadway's most gifted songwriting partnerships. But Whitfield makes sure she includes every commonly omitted verse, utilizing her powerful alto to mesh with pianist (and husband) Mike Greensill's innovative arrangements to add her own touch to each of the songs. Her inflections in the bittersweet "Spring Is Here" add a new depth to an already emotional song, while Greensill's perky chart of "This Can't Be Love" showcases Whitfield's playfulness. The phenomenal bassist Michael Moore adds a lot to this session as well; his matchless arco bass introduces the medley of "My Romance," which segues into the lively but neglected "Johnny One Note." While the productive partnership of Hart and Rodgers (or Rodgers and Hart for hard-headed traditionalists) is unlikely to be matched in the history of songwriting, the partnership of Wesla Whitfield and Mike Greensill is an extremely successful musical marriage that is always a delight to hear. ~ Ken Dryden

One of the latest in the Original Jazz Classics' two-fer series has the greatest of all Jack McDuff's organ groups assembled for two different albums on this CD, both from 1966. This is a partial issue of a number of albums all issued by the same group. Guitarist George Benson, saxophonist Red Holloway, and Joe Dukes all had records issued under their names by Prestige. The first six tracks were issued under the original title Soulful Drums of Joe Dukes, and the last half under McDuff's name and the title Hot Barbeque. It is fitting that these two sessions be reissued together, with gorgeous remastered sound, because they are two of the funkiest, deep groove jazz organ records of all time. Trampled by Turtles started out as four guys in a living room playing acoustic instruments. Now there are five of them. That’s the bio you get when you go to the Trampled by Turtles website, but if you’re reading this, it’s fair to assume you need more information than that. When asked about the abbreviated one-sheet, guitarist Dave Simonett replied, “I had just gotten so sick of pretentious band bios telling everyone how special and original the musicians are. I don’t want people to think we talk about ourselves that way.” But, with this business the way it is, you gotta have a bio. So, here goes:People often find it hard to categorize the music of Trampled by Turtles. Is it bluegrass? Not quite. Is it folk? Not quite that either. TBT’s songs vary from angst-ridden barn-burners that border on punk-rock, to sweet, slow, country (and not-so-country) laments. When asked, the band doesn’t seem to care what you call them. Alt-bluegrass, non-traditional bluegrass, it’s best to just listen for yourself.Trampled by Turtles is Dave Simonett (guitar), Tim Saxhaug (bass), Dave Carroll (banjo), Erik Berry (mandolin), and Ryan Young (fiddle). They call Duluth, MN home, but have spent the last five years taking this music across the country, playing in venues ranging from raging basement parties to places like The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco and New York’s Bowery Ballroom.
