Honestly, it's tempting to imagine (shades of the urban legend about German avant-garde freaks Amon Düül) that when Houston Person signed to High Note Records in the mid-'90s, he recorded one marathon session and all of his albums since then have simply been culled from those master tapes. Certainly they've had the same sound, along with most of the same personnel. Practically the only way to tell the difference between the albums is by the song selection choices. This one splits the difference between jazz standards and pop hits, with Duke Ellington's immortal "Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me" (given a wonderful, sprightly reading that owes a subtle debt to Rahsaan Roland Kirk's sublime take on the underrated A Meeting of the Times) leading one pack and Bread's treacly "If" (surprisingly good, with some lovely, restrained guitar work by Russell Malone the only backing for Person's meditative solo) the other. As always with Person, the standards win. This isn't a bad place to start for those wondering which album from this era to get. ~ Stewart Mason

Soft Lights album
$14.29 High Note Records, founded by the former owners of Muse Records, has retained some of the defunct label's more talented performers, one of them being Houston Person. Appearing as a leader, sideman, or guest on well over 100 recordings, Person uses his knowledge and experience to revisit nine very familiar standards with his big, full-bodied, soulful tenor saxophone. Although Person is the headliner on this set, pianist Richard Wyands gets a considerable amount of solo time. Wyands is right at home with Person, having been associated with a tenor saxman from the same school, if not the same class, as Person -- Gene Ammons. Wyands is awarded an especially long solo on "Mean to Me." Person's arrangements can be imaginative. The title tune, "My Romance," opens with Person's deep saxophone with just Kenny Washington's brushes behind him, seguing into a Ray Drummond bass solo. Everything on the album is understated, with most of the tunes delivered in a slow, deliberate tempo. There's an occasional nod to medium tempo, as on "Love Is Here to Stay." Given the very intimate nature of the session, ...
| | Houston Person In A Sentimental Mood CDs (2000)
Soft Lights CD music
$13.45 Houston Person is an excellent, underrated tenor saxophonist with a full, rich tone and a knack for well-constructed, tasteful, but never boring solos. That said, he's occasionally guilty of giving the people what they want, releasing smooth and conservative albums that are perfectly enjoyable to listen to, but somewhat beneath what he's capable of. 2000's In a Sentimental Mood is exactly that; this collection of standards features some excellent performances of classic ballads, but it's all so polite that it's hard to see the set as anything more than better-than-average background music. Foregoing his usual organ accompaniment, Person teams up with pianist Stan Hope, standup bassist George Kaye, and drummer Chip White for a classic piano trio-plus-sax lineup, and ...

| | Houston Person Blue Velvet CD (2001)
Soft Lights album
$14.29 Nearly indistinguishable from most of Houston Person's other albums for the High Note label in the late '90s and early 2000s, 2001's Blue Velvet has the same smoothly professional but slightly anonymous backing combo led by Richard Wyands' piano, a song selection taken mostly from the same set of classic songwriters, even a similar art design and the same engineer and studio. It's impossible to fault any of Houston Person's albums from this period, as the tenor saxophonist remains a sublimely gifted soloist with a gorgeous, well-rounded tone and a smartly melodic soloing sense, and the material, from the pens of Sammy Cahn, Billy Eckstine, and Oscar Levant, with the standard made popular by Bobby Vinton and David Lynch as the title ...
| | Rich Corpolongo Smiles CD (1998)
Soft Lights CD music
$14.69 This 1998 release is a satisfying session of freebop, post-bop, and avant-garde sounds from Chicago-based Rich Corpolongo, educator, author, arranger, composer, and master reed player. Corpolongo, who has worked with Eddie Harris, Herbie Hancock, Gary Burton, and Oliver Nelson, is an incisive, precise, and articulate player, with a cohesive and imaginative flow to his improvisations. Heard here on alto and soprano saxes, clarinet, and piccolo, Corpolongo has a knack for making his often quite advanced pieces accessible. The CD offers lyrical, impressionistic works, ...
