Purchase Altoicity CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Ted Brown Free Spirit CD (1989)
Altoicity album
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's ...

| | Frank Wess Quartet CD (1960)
Altoicity album
$8.49 Frank Wess has long been one of the most underrated flautists in jazz, but it's his primary instrument on this CD reissue of a Moodsville LP recorded in 1960. With fine accompaniment by piano master Tommy Flanagan, bassist Eddie Jones and drummer Bobby Donaldson, the leader's lyrical chops are evident in Alec Wilder's rarely performed ballad "It's So Peaceful in the Country." The light Latin setting of "Star Eyes" initially spotlights Flanagan's elegant piano, with the rhythm switching gears as Wess works his magic on flute. Flanagan alone introduces ...
| | Capt John Handy With Barry Martyn's Band CD (1968)
Altoicity CD music
$12.09 Capt. John Handy was one of the great discoveries of the 1960s New Orleans revival jazz movement, virtually the only alto saxophonist to play in that genre of music. Although often grouped with fairly primitive musicians, Handy was actually a technically solid, driving improviser whose style sometimes not only looked toward the swing era, but the jump jazz and rhythm & blues of the early 1950s. This CD was recorded at a concert during a European tour. Handy is the main soloist with British drummer Barry Martyn's sextet and, fortunately, dominates the music. His three roaring choruses on "Who's Sorry Now" (plus the closing ensemble that follows) are a definite highlight. Handy's wide vibrato is perfectly under control and adds to the passion of his playing. The three-piece rhythm section of the band was also fairly ...

Altoicity music CDs
$22.55 Rock music fans often forget (or never imagine), that there's more to the world of music than English-speaking/singing bands. That's where this enlightening collection comes in. This volume of the LOVE, PEACE & POETRY series concentrates on psychedelic-era (1966-1970) bands from Spanish-speaking nations, singing in Spanish and/or English.
The mind-melting ...

| | Alex Sipiagin Steppin' Zone CD (2001)
Altoicity album
$14.55 Trumpeter Alex Sipiagin, one of the mainstays of the Mingus Big Band, has some distinguished company on his Criss Cross debut: Chris Potter on tenor sax, David Kikoski on piano, Scott Colley on bass, and Jeff "Tain" Watts on drums. It's highly unlikely that an A-list quintet such as this would let listeners down and, sure enough, the disc swings like crazy from beginning to end. The program is bookended by two takes of Colley's "Catalyst," which the bassist also recorded for his Portable ...
