Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; English Subtitles This visually stunning action-adventure film, based on the best-selling novel by JAWS author Peter Benchley, stars Nick Nolte and Jaqueline Bissett as a couple on a romantic holiday in Bermuda. New Yorkers, David Sanders (Nolte) and Gail Berke (Bissett) are enjoying a much-needed vacation; while diving one day they discover the sunken wreck of a WWII freighter and unearth a gold coin as well as a mysterious glass ampule. Excited, they believe their discovery could be a long lost treasure, but they soon learn that their most valuable discovery is actually an ampule of morphine, one of thousands left behind on the medical supply ship. This discovery leads them into the hands of Henry Cloche (Louis Gossett Jr.), an extremely dangerous and powerful Haitian drug dealer who will stop at nothing to unearth the dangerous treasure. With the help of Romer Treece (Robert Shaw), an old treasure hunter, David and Gail soon realize that they have made a much more important discovery than the morphine and set out to keep their actual treasure a secret. Director Peter Yates's suspenseful film features death-defying dives and exquisite underwater photography. Posters of Bissett underwater in a T-shirt adorned many a dorm wall in the late 1970s. Van Cleef and Arpels designed the 18th-century treasure.
The theme from THE DEEP was sung by Donna Summer.

High Recommended THis action packed adventure was beautifully filmed under water. An excellent story line that would keep audiences in suspense till the end. The cast was great, especially Robert Shaw. Perhaps one disappointment was some materials had been cut from the original theatrical release( why? ). Other than that, this is an excellent movie not to be missed by anyone, especially diving enthusiasts. Submitted by a reviewer (phoenix, AZ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

BEST UNDERWATER TREASURE MOVIE Let's face it, everyone is excited by underwater treasure, and the "Deep" is the best movie on the subject with the beauty of Bermuda as a bonus. The acting is excellent, the story is interesting and the underwater action is superb. This movie exhibit's the beautiful paradise of Bermuda which has special nostalgic appeal to me from my honeymoon there. The battle with drug dealers on the surface and denizens of the deep kept the action taut and exciting. I really liked the research and detective work of the treasure hunters to trace the origins of the sunken ship. The only other underwater treasure movie that comes close is Howard Hughes' "Underwater" with Jane Russell in 1955 but the "Deep" is much better developed and executed. I strongly recommend this movie to those with an interest in treasure hunting. Take a dive in the "Deep". Submitted by a reviewer (Old Lyme, CT USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
