DVD. Feature film. 1st live concert @ Albert Hall. W/ Geor ge Wendt, Richard E. Grant, Roger Moore, & Meat Loaf. Cameo s by Elton John, Elvis Costello, more. Rated PG. CC. 93 min . Big-screen shenanigans from the Spice Girls, who cavort harmlessly in backstage vignettes whilst changing costumes, mugging in the kitschy environs of their Union Jack tour bus (piloted by no less significant a personage than Meat Loaf), and evading a bothersome paparazzo. Trashy, guilty fun, littered with celebrity cameos. Spice World Reviews: "...Straighforwardly funny and bouncily colourful..."
-- Mark Sinker, Sight and Sound "...SPICE WORLD is pleasant....The whole group radiates energy, color and good cheer. They make the most of their raging celebrity here..."-- Janet Maslin, New York Times "...The kind of show every ten-year-old girl has been saving her milk money to see..."

Seems like only yesterday... It is odd how time seems to behave. It seems so long ago that 'Spice World' was released into the theatres, yet it seems only like yesterday. A strange conflict in the perception of time in one's mind. That being said, there is nothing "spectacular" about this film in terms of special film effects, plot, storyline, or slapstick humour. To most who watch 'Spice World', it is a completely ridiculous and ludicrous waste of film and time. I see it as something much more. The fact that this movie has such a complete disregard for a plot and storytelling is what I find to be so appealing about it. No big name actors, just five girls in a pop group that was sure to fade from the memories of the majority of the public in a matter of years, or maybe, months or weeks.
If you find yourself asking in the middle of the flick "Why?", this is not your movie. Suffice to say, you will either "get" this movie or you will not. I would venture to guess that you would have to be born not much before 1984 to be one of those "in the know" regarding 'Spice World'. It's something you'd have to be a part of to have even the slightest comprehension of what I'm writing about. I am unsure as to whether future generations will be able to enjoy and appreciate this film as much as I do, but I do hope so. There is something so completely magnificent about it that is also so completely unexplainable to one with words about 'Spice World'. The music, the odd brand of dry humour, camera angles, character interaction. As fake as one might believe the Spice Girls to have been, there is something so utterly stark and real behind all the oddness and glitter of this movie. $7.85 There's a long tradition in England of kiddie-pop bands who harmonize well, look good, sell syrup by the millions in the U.K. and can't get arrested in the U.S. The Spice Girls smash that mold by adding a point of view. Having more pop hooks than your average bait & tackle shop doesn't hurt either. The five Spice Girls met when they answered a would-be svengali's ad looking for young women who could sing and dance. He got more than he bargained for. They also had spunk, and one of their first acts was to fire him and take control of their own career.
The group co-wrote every song on SPICE, and it's an audacious debut on the order of Madonna's first LP. The girls' songs, like Madonna's, are simultaneously about wanting sex and wanting empowerment; their mantra is "girl power." These are new kids on the block who've actually been around the block a few times. Calling their debut single "Wannabe" is merely the most obvious nod to the queen of pop; they pay further homage in the brazen way they grab for any pop style within reach. Hip-hop, dancehall reggae, dance-club beats and soft balladry and all thrown into this spicy pop stew with utter abandon. Vocal lines are wantonly tossed back and forth among the five like unsuspecting suitors. If they can figure out a way to keep it up, watch out.

Spice World review
$8.85 Did they actually write the songs, each of which is credited to the Spice Girls plus a couple of songwriting pros? Do Posh and Ginger actually sing on them? Do you really care? In perfect bubblegum form, the Spice Girls capitalize on their moment by releasing their second album in nine months, aping their idols (Madonna, Boy George, the Supremes) even better than they did on the first one, and separating the filler you were expecting anyway with a couple of monster singles you never could have predicted.
The bubbly Motown dance tune "Stop" is either the Supremes filtered through the Archies or Culture Club filtered through St. Etienne--either way, a great lost pop melody hit upside the head by a dollop of new-wave kitsch. "Spice Up Your Life" is the requisite follow-up to "Wannabe," except that it doesn't sound that much like it, and its slinky, Latin-ized beat and fast sing-song rapping are nearly irresistible. Will they be around in another nine months? Do you really need an ...

Spice World movie DVD
$10.45 Digitally remastered by Tom Ruff (Universal Music Studios East, Edison, New Jersey).
This release was formerly titled: FEELIN' ALLRIGHT: THE VERY BEST OF TRAFFIC.
This well thought-out anthology includes just about every notable Traffic track from their peak years of 1968 to 1971. What immediately impresses here is the range of the band and the variety of their influences. They veer from psychedelic pop (love that cheesy sitar on their debut hit, "Paper Sun"), to jazz-inflected R&B on the instrumental "Glad," via Celtic folk in the lovely, pastoral "John Barleycorn Must Die," and the psychedelic rock of San Francisco-style jams on "Mr. Fantasy."
The whole enterprise is held together by the glue of Jim Capaldi's vastly underrated drumming and by Stevie Winwood's justifiably celebrated keyboards and Ray Charles-inflected vocals. You can almost smell the incense and controlled substances that were present at the creation of most of this material, but, in a way, this only adds to the music's laid-back charm. Essential.
Recorded at Olympic Studios, London, England between April ...
