Prolific director John Carpenter takes on the vampire genre in his action-horror film VAMPIRES. Bitter, tough-as-nails vampire hunter Jack Crow (James Woods) leads a specialized team, funded by no less than the Vatican, that is dedicated to destroying the race of vampires that inhabit the earth. The team is successful, and becomes lazy in its success, eventually falling victim to an elaborate ambush set up by a powerful master vampire. Crow and two others of his team are the only survivors, and are determined to get revenge for the massacre. Carpenter takes the genre to new heights with powerful action scenes, nifty vampire-killing weapons and great special effects. James Woods is wonderfully over the top as the head vampire hunter who has no love for the Vatican and a mysterious past that is never far behind him. VAMPIRES is based on the book by John Steakley, adapted for the screen by Don Jakoby. The score is creepy and powerful, a typical characteristic for a Carpenter film.
Theatrical release: October 30, 1998.
VAMPIRES was filmed in Sante Fe, New Mexico.
The film is based on the novel VAMPIRE$ by John Steakley.

Vampires film
$8.55 In Tim Burton's stylish, creepy retelling of the classic Washington Irving story, SLEEPY HOLLOW, Ichabod Crane (Johnny Depp) is a squeamish, bookish 18th century New York City investigator sent to a small town in lower Westchester county to look into three mysterious decapitations. When the always rational Crane arrives at the little Dutch village, he finds that most of the townsfolk believe the culprit to be the Headless Horseman, the ghost of a monstrous Hessian soldier (Christopher Walken), who seems to be mysteriously tied in to one of the town's most prominent families. Burton's natural instincts for campy humor, combined with the hauntingly gorgeous technical work (Emmanuel Lubezki's cinematography and Danny Elfman's score included), collide to create a work of exhilarating entertainment and poetic storytelling. Miranda Richardson, Casper Van Dien and Christina Ricci help make up an ensemble cast that, combined with the historically accurate village sets and dreamlike magic of the haunted Western Woods--created on the largest sound stage in film history--makes SLEEPY HOLLOW a visually stunning, gripping, and, at times, chilling film.

| | Matrix DVD (1999)
Vampires DVD
$8.29 With THE MATRIX, the Wachowskis have established themselves as innovative filmmakers who push the boundaries of live-action films. Like the groundbreaking STAR WARS, THE MATRIX (also the first film of a trilogy) showcases a unique visual style, one the Wachowskis achieved through an array of techniques and digital effects, some never before seen in mainstream Hollywood films. Although computer morphing technology had been used before in films such as THE ABYSS and TERMINATOR 2, the Wachowskis were the first to use "bullet time," a time-bending digital effect that utilizes both computer-generated imagery and still photography.
The film itself is a complex story that aspires to mythology, focusing on a computer hacker named Neo (Keanu Reeves) who searches for the truth behind the mysterious force known as the Matrix. He finds his answer with a group of strangers led by the charismatic Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne). What they encounter in confronting that truth makes for a lightning-paced, eye-popping thrill ride of a movie. Packed with stunning fight scenes (choreographed by accomplished Hong Kong director Yuen Wo-Ping), astonishing visual effects, quotable lines, and a terrific supporting cast (led by Carrie-Anne Moss, in her first major Hollywood film), THE MATRIX is a bold triumph that raises the bar for all science fiction films.
This 136 minute feature film is a special edition DVD star ring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburn, and Carrie-Anne Moss.

| | Gonin - Double Pack DVDs (1995) Subtitled
Vampires video
$21.49 This double-pack contains two chapters in the epic GONIN saga.
GONIN: Set in an economically depressed part of Japan, five men, all down on their luck, decide to band together for one spectacular heist. But when things don't go quite as planned, they have to defend themselves against the local yakuza. The result is a hip, almost operatic action film with emphasis on male bonding and many similarities to the films of Sergio Leone and Sam Peckinpah.
GONIN 2: A sequel to GONIN, which means five men, GONIN 2 features not five men this time, but five women who, like the five men in the first film, attempt to rip off the local yakuza. The film begins as Masamichi Toyama, a man with a large gambling debt, is tracked down by his yakuza lenders and forced to endure a beating and the rape of his wife. Humiliated, Masamichi sets out for revenge with only a sword and ends up teaming with the Gonin, a group of five female thieves who would like nothing better than to loot the local yakuza base. Unfortunately, when they steal the ring Masamichi wanted for his wife, Masamichi turns against his erstwhile cohorts to get the ring back. A highly stylized and violent crime drama, GONIN 2 retains the visual sensibility of its successor and adds even more perverse humor to the mix, making the film a highly entertaining blend of genres.
