Nicholas And Alexandra Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Nicholas and Alexandra, a grand epic film As a lover of epic historical films, this was a welcome addition to my DVD collection. I saw "Nicholas and Alexndra" when it was first released, but I have never seen it since then. It portrays the dramatic fall of Tsarism in Russia and the most cataclysmic event of the twentieth century---the Russian Revolution. There are strong performances by Michael Jayston (Nicholas) and Janet Suzman (Alexandra). Nicholas is shown to be a weak, but well intentioned ruler whose only aim was to hand autocratic rule to his son Alexis intact. Despite warnings from competent ministers, he was unable to change and adapt to the socio-political changes occurring in Russia. His passionate desire was to be a good family man and both he and Alexandra were in constant tension over their son, Alexis, who suffered from the "royal disease," haemophelia. From this pinnacle of power the family falls to become victims of the Bolshevik Revolution, victims in the true sense---they are viciously assassinated, the children and servants included, by order of the Ural Soviet. Because of the empathy the film viewer develops for Nicholas and his family, one has to ask "Why was this extreme necessary?" The film faithfully reminds us that personal values and morality pale before the crushing power of political change. Submitted by Roger (Mount Vernon, OH) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
