Anne, the younger of Elliot's unmarried offspring, is a comely, dutiful woman but a deeply melancholy soul. She's been heartbroken ever since Lady Russell, a trusted family friend, persuaded Anne to refuse the marriage proposal of naval officer Frederick Wentworth on account of his lack of fortune.
Finding himself on the brink of financial ruin, Sir Walter Elliot rents out Kellynch Hall while he and the girls vacation at Bath. An ironic twist of fate brings the now wealthy Captain Wentworth and his relatives to the Elliot estate as seasonal tenants. So, Anne's beloved Frederick Wentworth enters her world once more. But there's no certainty love will bloom again. A lavish BBC production of Jane Austen's 1818 love story of an English officer pursuing the woman he loves through youthful rejection, long estrangement, and eventual, glorious reconciliation. A Slow Beginning, But A Great Finish
I was fortunate to find this movie on VHS at a local video rental store. After watching the movie my wife thought that the beginning was painfully slow. I did not see it that way, but then maybe I was so impressed by the character Capt. Wentworth (Ciaran Hinds) a real man's man. I feel that Hinds fit the part so well. I have also heard some say that Amanda Root (playing the character Anne Elliot) was very weak and mousey. I feel that she was of a quiet nature, but not weak. I refer to the dialogue between Anne & Capt. Bennick or Anne & Capt. Harville. I thought there was a definate strength there. All in all I feel it is a really interesting love story. The production was excellent as I feel the warmth of the period was captured. I enjoy it so much that I purchased the DVD.

I have seen this movie at least 5-6 times and I just loved it. This is my 2nd favourite Jane Austen story (my first is P&P). It is the story full with pathos and realism. This is the story that captures my heart because it is not about a woman with 'perfect life'. It is about 'second chances' and destiny (if you believe in it). The question is: if Liz said 'no' to Mr. Darcy and what happens after ...
It is NOT the best ever made film based on Jane Austen's works. But I love the story and the leading actors are NOT in FULL HOLYWOOD GLAMOUR. They have done a good job with delivering the 'period' styles and sentiments.

This movie is true to Jane Austen's ageless novel about two young lovers parted by the others' interference. The story picks up years later and unfolds slowly so the viewer can appreciate how difficult it is for the lovers to overcome their pain and give each other another chance. The major and supporting characters are well performed by an excellent cast that hold the viewer through the full story.

--As one who loves all things British, I was frustrated at being unable to decipher much of the whispered or mumbled dialogue.
I felt there was a whole episode of PERSUASION 1 that I'd missed -- still not sure why Amanda Root appears to be so quietly bewildered throughout most of the film -- but love the period, homes, costumes, and story enough to watch it as many times as it takes to "get it".
