Closed Captioned; Second Audio Track; Additional Footage; Bio/Filmographies; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; English Subtitles All Jody Sawyer (Amanda Schull) has ever wanted is to be a ballerina in the American Ballet Company. Her dream begins to come true when she's accepted to the company's Academy in New York City. Along with street-smart Eva (Zoë Saldana), veteran student Maureen (Susan May Pratt), sensitive Charlie (Sascha Radetsky), and flamboyant Erik (Shakiem Evans), Jody embarks on the stringent Academy training program with the hope of being one of the select few chosen for the Company. But Jody has her own style and has to contend with criticism that she doesn't have good feet and her body type is wrong. In the meantime, she finds herself involved with Cooper (Ethan Stiefel), a talented Harley-riding dancer and choreographer.
The masterful dance sequences in Nicholas Hytner's CENTER STAGE are enriched by the performances of real-life American Ballet Theatre star Stiefel, and those of Schull, who was an apprentice at the San Francisco Ballet when she was cast. Peter Gallagher stars as the head of the ballet company, Donna Murphy is featured as an instructor at the academy, and Debra Monk portrays an overbearing mother to Maureen (Susan May Pratt), the best ballerina in the class who is also harboring a dark secret. $7.59 (MP3 Available for Download) The soundtrack for this teen ballet flick has the flavor of a high school dance recital. Aside from the drama inherent in the lives of those who pursue the terpsichorean muse, the film is enlivened by a group of songs that are pretty danceworthy in and of themselves; included is a fine sampling of some popular contemporary pop and R&B artists. It's an animated collection of energetic modern music.
Two Jamiroquai gems, "Cosmic Girl" and "Canned Heat," are featured, swirling disco classics both. Offering a nod to rock and funk in one fell swoop, there's the Red Hot Chili Peppers' timeless take on Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground," while for all the Latin lovers out there, there's Elvis Crespo's carnal collaboration with Giselle D'Cole on "Come Baby Come." For those still living in the '80s, there's the King Of Pop in his "Bad" incarnation, and finally, for the kids, there are light R&B ballads such as Ruff Endz' "If I Was The One," catchy pop jingles the like of Mandy Moore's "I Wanna Be With You," and P.Y.T.'s "We're Dancing." CENTER STAGE covers all the pop bases with impressive efficacy.

$5.69 Rafael Infante (Chayanne), a Cuban native who never met his real father, immigrates to America. Taking up residence in Houston, he begins searching for his illegitimate father and takes up employment as a superintendent at the world renowned Excelsior Dance Studio run by John Burnett (Kris Kristofferson). While working as a lowly handyman, Rafael meets Ruby (Vanessa Williams), a striking dancer. Together they enter into the Las Vegas World Open Dance competition and embark in a heated romance.
DANCE WITH ME is a warm heartfelt film. It exhibits Randa Haines' knack for suspenseful, romantic storytelling (she worked as a director on HILL STREET BLUES in the early 1980s). Kris Kristofferson departs from his standard role of grit-iron tough guy to play the effeminate dance instructor. Chayanne is striking and dapper. He demonstrates that dancing is both a sexy art form and a mode of expression for confident and empowered men.

Center Stage DVD
$10.49 In the sharply funny LEGALLY BLONDE, Reese Witherspoon gives a glittering performance as Elle Woods, the natural blonde sorority queen who enrolls at Harvard Law School. When she first appears, Elle seems to be no more than the bright cousin of CLUELESS's Alicia Silverstone. Expecting her boyfriend Warner Huntington III (Matthew Davis) to propose, she is mortified when instead he says he needs somebody serious as his wife. When Elle discovers Warner's brother is engaged to a law student, she decides to go to Harvard. She studies for the LSATs, submits a video essay--in which she appears in a sequined bikini--and, miraculously, is accepted. At first, Elle is rebuked by Professor Stromwell (Holland Taylor) and is the target of snide comments from other students. But, gradually, it becomes clear that Elle is no fish out of water--she is smarter, more driven, and more likely to survive in the rarefied Harvard atmosphere than anyone else.
Witherspoon gets fine support from Selma Blair as Warner's new fiancée, Jennifer Coolidge as a beautician, Victor Garber as an unscrupulous professor, Ali Larter as a client from Elle's sorority, Holland Taylor, and Luke Wilson as a lawyer fascinated by Elle's unconventional approach. The smart, witty script is by Karen McCullah and Kirsten Smith. The first-time director is 28-year-old Australian Robert Luketic.

| | Janet Jackson Damita Jo CD (2004)
Center Stage video
$11.89 (MP3 Available for Download) Just as the furor over her notorious exposure at the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show died down in the spring of 2004, the iconic Janet Jackson unleashed DAMITA JO. While the soul-baring, bedroom-eyed record is unlikely to win over anyone scandalized by her Super Bowl antics, Jackson's fans--and fans of sensual, soulful pop in general--should enjoy the sultry outing, which continues the theme of sexual discovery that she began on 1993's JANET.
With over two decades of dominating the charts and a lifetime as musical royalty, Jackson knows her way around a tune, and DAMITA JO is swimming in pop hooks. There are a number of down-and-dirty tracks such as "Strawberry Bounce," "Warmth," and "Moist," which slink joyfully and lustily through the night. However, Jackson truly scores when she combines the distinctly carnal with more innocent pop notions, as she does with sublime beauty on the Dramatics-esque "I Want You" and with verve on the irresistible dance-rock of "Just a Little While."

| | Hitch DVD (2005)
Center Stage film
$11.59 In Andy Tennant's (SWEET HOME ALABAMA, ANNA AND THE KING) delightful romantic comedy HITCH, Will Smith stars as Alex Hitchens, an urban "date doctor" who helps the common man woo the woman of his dreams. Hitch will use any means necessary--dance lessons, back waxing--to instill romantic confidence in his clientele. Why? He was once a lonely wallflower himself, who learned about love and heartbreak the hard way. His latest project, Albert Brennaman (Kevin James), may be his most difficult. Brennaman, a junior accountant prone to clumsiness, has fallen head-over-heels for one of his clients, Allegra Cole (Amber Valleta), a well-known celebrity. To complicate things further, Hitch's dating dogma is shaken when he meets and falls for a beautiful gossip columnist, Sara Melas (Eva Mendes), whose sharp wit easily pierces his cool façade. Conflict arises when Melas uncovers Hitch's true profession and blames him for her best friend being dumped.
HITCH is set in affluent hot spots around New York City, making for some splendid visuals. Tennant gets charming performances from all of his leads, especially James, who makes an amazing transition from television's KING OF QUEENS and nearly steals the spotlight from Smith with his talent for physical comedy. Nevertheless, James and Smith have excellent onscreen chemistry. Kevin Bisch's first script is full of clever, contemporary dialogue, alternately pointing out the silliness and the poignancy of love and dating.
New York date doctor Alex Hitchens (Will Smith) tries to charm gossip columnist Sara Meals (Eva Mendes) at the same time he is coaching shy Albert (Kevin James) on how to win the love of beautiful heiress Allegra Cole (Amber Valletta).
