Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; English Subtitles; Director's Comments A powerful biography of '50s Texas rockabilly phenomenon Buddy Holly who took his band the Crickets to the top of the charts before a tragic airplane accident ended his life. Portrays Holly as regular, hardworking type who struggles with peers and the music industry before he makes it big with the huge hit "That'll Be The Day." Also details the final events leading up to the plane crash, en route to Minnesota in a snow storm on February 3, 1959, which also claimed the lives of Richie Valens and the Big Bopper. Co-produced by Innovasions-ECA.

Buddy Holly Story Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) needs 10 star for the best its the best movie i had ever seen Submitted by jcbhyde (Westmoreland Tn.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Buddy Holly Lives- This is a phenomenal movie that is almost 'spontaneous combustion' from start to finish. Its really two movies in one, with the special feature of having Gary Busey and the director Steve Rash doing commentary about the making of the movie, and recounting real facts from Buddy's life, as an extra feature. You never realize that this movie was shot over a few weeks with a budget that was a little over one-million dollars. With a fantastic supporting cast including Don Stroud and Charles Martin Smith, {and Jerry Zaremba as Eddie Cochrane} Gary Busey gives an Academy Award nominated performance, and he should have won. The music has a life and vitality that is nothing short of breathtaking. The music was shot live during the filming, and often the rehearsal of a song was so good it was used with no followup take. This spontaniety was what puts this movie in a class by itself. While some will say that some of the facts in real life were different, as was Gary's rendition of the music, that should be overlooked. Buddy Holly was not a cardboard cutout, but a real person, and this movie brought him alive, and introduced generations to Holly's music and gives him his rightful place as one of the true innovators of Rock and Roll.
As the words go in one of his songs, "the stars appear and the shadows are falling", its very easy to believe that Buddy is up there among the stars, and smiling down on us.

BUDDY HOLLY STORY BEST MUSICAl i have seen,+great film Submitted by bellyelvis (AMBLE, NORTHUMBERLAND, ENGLAND) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Welcolm to the world of Buddy Holly The Buddy Holly Story starring Gary Busey should not be taken as a historical document. Nor do I believe it ever set out to be. What has been created is a film which gives the feel and atmosphere of Buddy Holly, his music and the USA of the day. To have been completely factual would have most probably killed the film with legal challenges and suppression. The Crickets leaving Buddy to side with Norman Petty in the split leading to the final tour and the bitter disappointment this must have caused Buddy, the actual split itself with Petty and the resultant financial complications, these happenings are really not the sort of thing to air in a movie to celebrate the life and music of one of the founders of Rock.
Instead Gary Busey has strapped on a Fender and in effect becomes Buddy Holly. The rhythm and beat, the frantic excitement, the sheer enjoyment of the music, it is all there. We actually get to experience a timeslice of a period some of us recall fondly and others would like to share. A wonderful reminder of good music for us oldies or a enjoyable introduction to a legend for others, a Rock'n'Roll legend quoted by The Beatles and a number of other major musical identities as a major influence in their music.

$7.45 In Karel Reisz's SWEET DREAMS, Jessica Lange stars as Patsy Cline, the ill-fated country singer whose trembling, emotion packed renditions of "Crazy," "Sweet Dreams," and "I Fall to Pieces," made her one the most enduring voices in all of American popular music. Starting out by performing more standard country songs in little dives and honky-tonks in Virginia, Patsy rose to national prominence after her manager Ted Healy matched her voice to her now famous bittersweet love songs. Unfortunately, her own love life often mirrored the sadness in her songs. We see her choose to "stand by her man," as Loretta Lynn sang in COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER. That film, similar to SWEET DREAMS ...
