Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Soundtrack French; English Subtitles Romantic melodrama set during French colonial rule in Vietnam from 1930-1954. French national Eliane thinks of Vietnam as home: she owns a rubber plantation there, and has adopted Camille, the Vietnamese child of Eliane's deceased friends. But mother and daughter are soon at odds over both romance and politics: Camille has fallen for French naval officer Jean-Baptiste, who was once Eliane's lover, and has also become a revolutionary determined to destroy the French-run government. Tensions deepen when authorities sentence Camille to a French labor camp, and Eliane takes charge of Jean-Baptiste and Camille's baby.
As time passes, it becomes clear that France's reign in Vietnam will soon end -- leaving mother, daughter and grandchild on different sides of the ideological issue... A passionate story of a French mother and her adopted daughter who fall in love with the same soldier during the communist revolution in colonial Vietnam. Academy Award Nominations: Best Actress--Catherine Deneuve. Academy Awards: Best Foreign Film. The Columbia TriStar special edition video #80813 is part of a limited edition Academy Awards sell through package that comes with a free copy of "Oscar's Greatest Moments," a classic collection of some of the most memorable moments from Oscar telecasts.

The film begins in 1930 during the years of French colonial rule in what was referred to as Indochina. Many French people, like Catherine Deneuve's character, lived in Indochina their entire life, had never even been to France, and considered their adopted land their home. But the French set up a ruling class system that exploited many of the Vietnamese, in some cases even enslaving them, similar to the British rule in India.
As Marxist ideals started taking hold, especially among intellectuals, the Vietnamese were able to form a solid resistance to French rule. They finally gained their independence in 1954, and Indochina was divided into the countries now known as Vietnam, Cambodia (Kampuchea), and Laos.
Independence caused a civil war between those wanting to see a Marxist government and those (mostly wealthy landowners) favoring a right-wing dictatorship -- which left the opening for America's later exploits in the country during the Vietnam War.
Shot in Vietnam, Malaysia and Switzerland, in Eclair color, Kodak Eastmancolor film, Panavision equipment.
Catherine Deneuve, the film's star, was the model for the statue of Marianne, the French republic's official symbol.
Dialogue French and Vietnamese; English subtitles.
Rated BBFC 12 by the British Board of Film Classification.

Good flick What is a movie? I is a form of media to entertain us for as long as the movie is playing. The history of Indochina or Vietnma..the war nothing matters from real life. When I watch a movie, I watch the movie not compare it to real life events. This is an entertaining movie, Catherine DeNeuve is beautiful as is her "daughter" and Vincent Perez is a fine actor. This is an excellent movie from an acting standpoint but it also is a beautifully filmed movie. The scenery is astounding and you can feel the malaria sinking into your blood. A good movie to watch overall! Submitted by David (NYC, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
awful worst movie ever, big waste of time, id rather have people throw bricks at my head then watch this movie again Submitted by marc (scarsdale new york) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
It is educational and very emotional Some of us never knew the history of what is now Vietnam, the depiction of that era is so well done by the actors and the emotional side of the movie is so realistic, specially how the French treated their colonies. I was a little girl in France when my father, a civil engineer borrowed 4 "Indochinois" from the French Military and protected them through his work usage of them. They were so grateful that they made the most beautiful toys made of paper for me and one gave me the picture of a lady who was their Imperatrice at one time. Each of these men had been in their own business in their country and they were so humiliated by the French who recruited them for Military service which was in fact jailing them for their labor.. Cruelty was an every day thing. Ariane Lesmez Submitted by a reviewer (Union City, CA 94587) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

$23.29 ULTRAVIOLET: Although the artwork in the opening credits would lead you to believe otherwise, writer/director Kurt Wimmer (EQUILIBRIUM) reportedly based ULTRAVIOLET not on a comic book but on John Cassavetes's 1980 film, GLORIA, in which a woman must protect a young boy who is carrying information sought by the Mafia. In ULTRAVIOLET's mid-21st century, a virus has turned part of the earth's population into "hemophages," vampire-like creatures with heightened speed and dexterity, and a fascist government is intent on stamping them out. Enter Violet (Milla Jovovich), a hemophage determined to fight for her people. Her battle takes an unexpected turn, however, when she finds herself protecting Six (Cameron Bright), a mysterious young child who was raised in a lab.
Tailor-made for young action fans raised on anime and videogames who want nothing more than to see a beautiful heroine leave a path of destruction behind her, ULTRAVIOLET cross-pollinates plot threads from popular franchises like THE MATRIX and UNDERWORLD. Creating a brightly hued, soft-focus environment constructed entirely with CGI and a green screen, ULTRAVIOLET's look is much like SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW (2004). Cementing the reputation she established with similar athletic, minimally clothed roles in THE FIFTH ELEMENT and the RESIDENT EVIL films, Jovovich will go down in the books as a sci-fi femme fatale for the ages. Her Ultraviolet--who inexplicably changes her hair color and outfits seemingly at will--is a lethal melding of Morticia Adams at a rave and KILL BILL's Bride. Pulling off moves that clearly demonstrate the training she underwent for the role, and usually with a bare midriff, she gives her fans plenty to enjoy. Wimmer wisely leaves the door open for further adventures in the saga.
RESIDENT EVIL: The Umbrella Corporation's Vault, a secret facility located deep below Raccoon City, is sabotaged and a deadly virus is stolen. In the mansion that conceals another entrance to the Vault, Alice (Milla Jovovich) lies on the shower floor, naked except for the shower curtain. She can't remember anything but, as she dresses, she recalls memory fragments. Then masked ...
