Theatrical trail er, interactive menus, scene selection. Dolby stereo. A troubled, hypochondriacal 11-year-old girl deals with some of life's more adult realities, as her dad--a widowed mortician--begins dating his funeral cosmetologist, and her friendship with a neighbor boy evolves into a pre-teen romance. But her emotional journey follows a difficult, rocky path. Vada Sultenfuss (Anna Chlumsky) is an eleven year old girl in a small Pennsylvania town in the early 1970s, at the beginning of life even as she lives with the constant reminder of death; her father (Dan Ackroyd) is a mortician who runs his business out of the family home, and her mother died during childbirth complications. The father and daughter also live with Vada's grandmother, who suffers from Alzheimers and whose only vocalizations are belted-out showtunes from her youth. This life story, paired with Ada's precocious and imaginative mind, makes for some highly entertaining and eminently human eccentricities; a hypochondriac, Vada is a regular patron of her family doctor, constantly convinced that she is suffering from some obscure and fatal illness. Her best friend is Thomas J. (Mackaulay Culkin), a wide-eyed naif to whom she tells all her thoughts, fears, and dreams. These include her romantic interest in her English teacher (Griffin Dunne), and her reservations regarding Shelly (Jamie Lee Curtis), her father's newly-employed makeup artist and love interest. Vada's world is eventually turned upside down when tragedy strikes, and she is forced to do some growing up along the way.
Director Howard Zieff has delivered a timeless coming-of-age that endures due to the strength of its characters and the quirky humanity of the story. Anna Chlumsky exhibits a vast emotional range and delivers a stunning performance, while Culkin seems natural in his role of observer that is worlds away from his character in HOME ALONE. The film treats the loss of innocence and the pain Vada goes through with respect and depth, and ultimately creates a moving portrait of a family's growth together as they learn to recognize and accept the pain and beauty of life. Film was originally rated PG-13 by the MPAA, but won a PG on appeal. My Girl Reviews: "...[Culkin is] cute and sympathetic..." -- Rating: B

| | Ozzy Osbourne Ozzmosis CD (1995) Remastered
My Girl video
$7.59 Let us all be thankful that Ozzy's retirement didn't stick. It supposedly lasted for three days, after which he got bored and started working on this project. Heavy, riff-intensive tunes, progressive song structures and a little psychedelia give OZZMOSIS a definite Sabbath flavor. Ozzy must have been in touch with whatever inspired early classics like PARANOID and MASTERS OF REALITY. Witness the extremely chunky "Thunder Underground," which can stand up next to "Sweet Leaf" and "Symptom Of The Universe" as an archetype of hard rock. The trippy guitar in "Ghost Behind My Eyes" and "Denial" are not some young Ozzy-wannabe going for a retro sound--this man was there, "Planet Caravan"ing.
Still, this heavy metal daddy in touch with his roots is also hip to the genre's latest sound. OZZMOSIS has a live, up-front feeling, thanks to producer Michael Beinhorn (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden). Zakk Wylde's huge, raw guitar also plays a major role. He provides scorching solos, lush textures and juicy fills with a muscular tone and minimal effects--the perfect complements to Osbourne's songwriting.
But more important than the raging guitars and the big sound is attitude. Ozzy's spunk has indeed rejected retirement. His songs still spew biting commentary at whoever will listen. "Your bulls**t culture licking can't stop the deathwatch ticking/You're only mortal after all," he warns on "Thunder Underground." Ozzy himself may not be immortal, but OZZMOSIS sounds ...
| | Ozzy Osbourne The Ozzman Cometh CD (2002)
My Girl film
$9.69 THE OZZMAN COMETH is a single CD collection of hits, previously unavailable recordings and one new track. Previously included a limited edition second disc containing 2 of the 4 previously unavailable recordings as well as an interview with Ozzy Osbourne.
As if we needed another reason to believe that Ozzy Osbourne is God, along comes THE OZZMAN COMETH, a double CD retrospective of one of the most enduring and influential figures in heavy metal. Consisting mostly of his post-Black Sabbath solo work as well as a live version of "Paranoid," this collection's biggest asset is the so-called "basement tapes," never-before-heard rehearsal tapes of four classic Sabbath songs. Dating back to 1970, "Black Sabbath" and "War Pigs" are the songs that transformed a petty thief from Birmingham, England into the godfather of heavy metal.
But if Sabbath cemented his place in the rock 'n' roll canon, his solo work raised him to legendary status. Working with former Quiet Riot guitarist Randy Rhoads, Osbourne set the tone for the 80's metal revival with songs like "Crazy Train" and "Mr. Crowley." Capping off the collection is a seventeen minute interview with Ozzy from 1988, where he speaks frankly about the ups and downs in his career (parents be forewarned: this is not for the faint of heart). Ozzy has made it through all the pitfalls of a life in rock and roll and has come out on the other side ...
