Closed Captioned; English Subtitles Dutch director Paul Verhoeven (TOTAL RECALL, ROBOCOP) mixes big budget bug bashing with twisted satire of old Hollywood movies in this adaptation of Robert Heinlein's classic sci-fi novel. It's the future, Earth is at war, and the kids are all going off to fight giant killer bugs on the remote planet of Klendathu. Casper Van Diem, Denise Richards, Dina Meyer, and Patrick Muldoon play some of the blandly attractive young recruits who engage in soap-opera style love triangles as they toughen up and learn to fight (and die) like soldiers. Michael Ironside is their gung-ho, one-armed leader. The real stars though, are the superbly animated bugs. Packed to the rafters with jaw-dropping special effects and insane violence, the film managed to be a box office hit though it undoubtedly left some audiences confused at Verhoeven's slyly deadpan humor. By the time Neil Patrick Harris (TV's Doogie Howser) starts marching around in a Gestapo-style uniform, for example, it will be apparent this isn't STAR WARS. What it is however, is a rousing experience for mature viewers in the properly ironic frame of mind. Starship Troopers Quotes/Excerpts: "Would you like to know more?"--a slogan that appears frequently in newreel clips
"Violence has resolved more conflicts than anything else. The contrary opinion that violence doesn't solve anything is mearly wishful thinking at its worst!"--Rasczak (Michael Ironside) to his students
"Everyone fights, no one quits. If you don't do your job, I'll shoot you myself."--Rasczak to his troops
"You see a bug hole, you nuke it!"--Rasczak to his troops
"M.I. does the dying. Fleet just does the flying."--Rico (Casper Van Dien) referring to the downside of being in the mobile infantry Starship Troopers Reviews: "...The film's main events are its wild bugfights, with hordes of extraordinarily dynamic special-effects creatures....These bizarre marauders are really something to see..."
-- Janet Maslin, New York Times "...Entertaining, engaging, exciting....With game, energetic, winsome performances...and effects that live up to the hype..."
-- Christine James, Box Office "...Fascinating....Featuring astonishing effects and some of the most harrowing battle scenes in movie history..."
-- Andrew O'Hehir, Sight and Sound "...Director Paul Verhoeven is back in his subversively nimble ROBOCOP groove with the uproariously cheeky STARSHIP TROOPERS" -- 4 out of 4 stars
-- Mike Clark, USA Today "...A letter grade would do a disservice to a movie that sees relentless entertainment and brilliant pop-culture fraud as two sides of the same media coin....The Most Ironic Hollywood Blockbuster Ever Made. See it for yourself and decide..."
-- Ty Burr, Entertainment Weekly Starship Troopers Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) AWESOME SCI-FI ABSOLUTELY ONE OF THE BEST SCI-FI IF NOT THE BEST SCI-FI MOVIE OF THE 90'S. VAN DIEN AND THE REST OF THE CAST WERE EXCELLENT. I AGREE WITH ANOTHER REVIEWER HERE THAT THE MOVIE SHOULD HAVE HAD A LITTLE MORE NUDITY BUT HEY THIS MOVIE ROCKED ANYWAY. NOT TO BE MISSED. IF YOU ARE A FAN OF SCIENCE FICTION THIS MOVIE NEEDS AND HAS TO BE IN YOUR COLLECTION. ENJOY. Submitted by MICHAELCBAREFOOT (FOUR OAKS, N.C., U.S.A.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Bloody fun! Okay, I know...the science was AWFUL. So call it "fiction", not "science fiction". But consider that the movie was not trying to be scientifically accurate. It was trying to be a good action flick...and it succeeded royally! And if coed showers are in the future, sign me up! By the way, the book was AWESOME. The movie only maintained 2 or 3 major points from the book (asteroid attacks, service required for citizenship, etc). But the rest was creative license. The soldiers in the book wore battle armor with automated weapons attached at the shoulders. There were more species of aliens than just bugs. Still, the movie held it's own as an in your face (and VERY gory) action flick. A must-have for the the "guy" collection. Submitted by Wang Hung Lo (Pensacola, FL) Was This Review Helpful? $8.29 With THE MATRIX, the Wachowskis have established themselves as innovative filmmakers who push the boundaries of live-action films. Like the groundbreaking STAR WARS, THE MATRIX (also the first film of a trilogy) showcases a unique visual style, one the Wachowskis achieved through an array of techniques and digital effects, some never before seen in mainstream Hollywood films. Although computer morphing technology had been used before in films such as THE ABYSS and TERMINATOR 2, the Wachowskis were the first to use "bullet time," a time-bending digital effect that utilizes both computer-generated imagery and still photography.
The film itself is a complex story that aspires to mythology, focusing on a computer ...

Ben's unscrupulous former partner (Sean Bean) and his gang of thugs are also after the treasure for selfish, evil purposes.
