Leon (Jean Reno) is a precise, calculating hit man--a consummate professional, with no family and no friends. However, he has casually befriended Mathilda (Natalie Portman, in an auspicious debut), a 12 year-old neighbor whose entire family, including her adored 4-year-old brother, is wiped out by some crooked DEA agents. The girl pleads with Leon to teach her how to be a "cleaner" and avenge her little brother's death. However, once she learns a few skills, Mathilda saunters into the DEA offices with the sole intention of killing the psychotic agent (Gary Oldman) who actually masterminded the executions. But her intended victim turns the tables on her, and Leon must rescue her. LEON was French director Luc Besson's first film shot in America.

Theatrical Release: September 30, 1994 (U.S.) Color by Technicolor. Shot in Technovision Anamorphic on location in New York City and Hoboken and West New York, New Jersey. In SDDS (Sony Dynamic Digital Sound. Clip used from the film "It's Always Fair Weather" (with Gene Kelly dancing on rollerskates) and the television show "Transformers." Additional cast: Willie One Blood, Don Creech, Keith A. Glascoe, Randolph Scott, Jernard Burkes, Matt De Matt (Stansfield's Men); Elizabeth Regan (Mathilda's Sister); Carl J. Matusovich (Mathilda's Brother); Frank Senger (Fatman); Luc Bernard (Mickey); and George Martin (Hotel Receptionist). On June 26, 1996, the 132 minute "director's cut" of the film was released theatrically in France. This version included 26 minutes of additional footage, including scenes of the 12-year-old Mathilda attempting (unsuccessfully) to seduce Leon. Rated BBFC 18 by the British Board of Film Classification. Copyright 1994 Gaumont and Les Films du Dauphin.

4 stars Much Better than the TV ratings give it
Ok, if you've seen a movie already and you watch it again over several times on TV, then it gets my nod for a recommend. There is no reason to get silly over 13 year old Mateldia's little school girl crush of 40 year old Leon, nothing ever happens and for you that just don't get Leon and his Plant, it's just showing you the guy cares about keeping something alive, when surrounded by death and how much personal belongings can a Hitman actually carry around always on the move? In the scene when the doorbell rings, Leon must decide instantly, should I let this little girl in to save her life or don't get involved. I think the movie deserves a far better rating than the very low 2 star rating TV G gave it. They also gave the shining 2 stars (need I saw more) This is much better than your typical B movie, I'm a movie buff and like how it was shot, the music used and the acting. If you want to compare movies, then compare this with other Hitman type movies, only the Mechanic starring Charles Bronson comes to mind as being on the same level and worth seeing. The movie hits the mark but just misses perfection.

4 stars A must-have movie!
When Gary Oldman shouted the word "EVERYONE", it shot this movie into 5 star status...and it was already at 4.99 up to that point. And quit dissing the French if they can deliver actors like Jean Reno. He smartly played the role of a cold and heartless person who turned out to have a heart after all. My only complaint was how creepy it was watching a too young Natalie Portman play such an overtly sexual character. But otherwise I had to praise her too for being so powerful a performer at such a young age. Add to your collection!

David Mamet wrote this screenplay under the name Richard Weisz, as a gun for hire, much like the masterless samurai of the film's title, who roamed Japan in the 19th Century, loyal only to themselves. A group of men with highly developed skills are called to a meeting in a deserted warehouse in Paris. Sam (Robert De Niro), an American, may be ex-CIA. Vincent ...

With THE MATRIX, the Wachowskis have established themselves as innovative filmmakers who push the boundaries of live-action films. Like the groundbreaking STAR WARS, THE MATRIX (also the first film of a trilogy) showcases a unique visual style, one the Wachowskis achieved through an array of techniques and digital effects, some never before seen in mainstream Hollywood films. Although computer morphing technology had been used before in films such as THE ABYSS and TERMINATOR 2, the Wachowskis were the first ...
