In between are pop standards like "Winter Wonderland" and Mel Torme's "Christmas Song" as well as some less familiar fare such as the delicate calypso "Mary's Boy Child" and the Welsh "Draw Tua Bethlehem". Five Premieres: Chamber Works With Guitars
$21.55 Blending the musical concept of the traditional violin-family string quartet with the sound of a plucked string ensemble comprising mandolin-family instruments, the Emerald City Mandolin Quartet brings it's unique "tremolo" style of musical interpretation to the classical string quartet literature. The Seattle-area based quartet is pleased to announce the release of their debut recording entitled 'Night Music'. The bulk of this recording is devoted to two major works - the ever popular Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (K. 525) by W.A. Mozart and Luigi Boccherini's Third Quintet for Guitar and Strings in E minor (G. 451). The CD is rounded out by two shorter pieces which act as bookends to the two larger works. These two pieces, Le Tic Toc Choc by François Couperin and Tempo di Ballo by Domenico Scarlatti, were both arranged for mandolin quartet by the late Sol Goichberg, an ardent promoter of the tremolo style of mandolin technique. Our playing style is based on the expressive tremolo technique of New York mandolin virtuoso Sol Goichberg, who strove to establish the mandolin as a legitimate classical instrument in America. Sol passed on this technique to, among others, student and friend, Albert Jacobson and they performed together through the 1960's. Upon relocating to Seattle, Albert formed his own ensemble, and Alan Jacobson, our first mandolinist, grew up listening to the playing of his father's ensemble as well as the recordings of Sol and Albert's New York group and at age 14, Alan became mandocellist in his father's ensemble.
