HOT contains both a full audio album and a CD-ROM program on one disc. The album is playable on any standard CD player; the computer program is playable on multimedia-equipped Macintosh and Windows systems.
As the title of their second record implies, the Squirrel Nut Zippers practice a modern variant of the "hot" jazz sound of the 1920s and '30s. While the Zippers have a well-developed sense of humor (as evidenced on tracks like "Bad Businessman") and a lighthearted feel, they never cross over into camp, thus avoiding the self-conscious dead end that has been the downfall of so many '90s "loungecore" bands.
The other important fact separating the Squirrel Nut Zippers from the faux-jazz pack is that they can really play their instruments. Vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Tom Maxwell handles guitar, baritone sax and clarinet with equal aplomb, and his bandmates' contributions on banjo, piano, ukulele and various other instruments betrays a musicianship that transcends any purist fears about inauthenticity. The vocal duties on HOT are shared by Maxwell, Jim Mathus and Katharine Whalen, all of whom lend a distinctive personality to the proceedings.
Recorded at Kingsway Studios, New Orleans, Louisiana and Mitch's, Brickhenge, North Carolina in October and November 1995.

This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.Musician (8/96, p.88) - "...a sextet of multi-instrumentalists who reach back to the hot jazz of the '30s and '40s for heated inspiration....The band's greatest triumph is that in digging into the past they've created music with wickedly fresh energy....HOT dishes out an almost frightening amount of fun..." CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Can't Let Go" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Williams's fans waited a long six years for this album, as Lucinda went through music business hassles and a revolving door of producers. The reward for their patience is an album full of rootsy, heartfelt observations that alternately rock and mourn. CAR WHEELS is full of songs about loss and longing, like "Metal Firecracker," "Drunken Angel" and "I Lost It," but even when she's bemoaning her own lack of happiness on the bluesy "Joy," she lets loose with so much ...

In his continuing evolution from pompadoured rockabilly revivalist to zoot-suited hipster, Brian Setzer keeps the faith with THE DIRTY BOOGIE, a collection that swings from stem to bow. Backed by hot horns and a bopping rhythm section, Setzer mixes well-arranged originals with well-known covers that show an aficionado's appreciation of jump blues, swing and doo-wop. Tunes by the Skyliners ("Since I Don't Have You"), Santo & Johnny ("Sleepwalk"), Bobby Darin ("As Long As I'm Singin'") and Bullmoose Jackson ("Nosey Joe") ...

| | Squirrel Nut Zippers Inevitable CD (1995)
Hot album
$7.69 In a mid-'90s indie scene that seemed stuck in an increasingly by-the-numbers rut, the debut by this septet from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, led by guitarist/singer Jim Mathus (who had previously been in the considerably more indiepop-oriented Metal Flake Mother), was both a complete shock and a hot topic of debate. Whether listeners loved the Squirrel Nut Zippers' indescribable mix of '20s hot jazz, vaudeville ...
| | Squirrel Nut Zippers Perennial Favorites CD (1998)
Hot CD music
$7.69 To mainstream audiences, Squirrel Nut Zippers' out-of-left-field rise in popularity (on the strength of "Hell," their 1997 alterna-pop hit) marked the beginning of the new swing movement's commercial breakthrough. Yet as PERRENIAL FAVORITES proves, the Zippers' diversity of styles evokes more than mere zoot suits and jump-blues shouters. Imagine, instead, a stew made of hot jazz, western swing and ethnic folk musics like klezmer, polka and tango--as well as brass-driven boogie--which seamlessly reflects the cross-cultural melting pot that early 20th century America aspired ...
| | Lyle Mays Street Dreams CD (1988) Reissue
Hot music CDs
$6.09 Lyle Mays' second solo album ventures even further afield than his acclaimed first record, into areas not associated with Mays nor his employer Pat Metheny. This time, the personnel list is far more varied, with several guest luminaries from the world of jazz-rock, as well as a big band and full chamber orchestra on some selections. Again, the main thrust of the album is bound up in a lengthy suite with new age atmospheric elements, juxtaposing fleet Brazilian grooves with a chamber orchestra, voluble Mays piano solos, and electronic interpolations by Mays and Frisell reminiscent of early classical electronic music. The solo "Chorinho" is a running classical exercise on electric keyboards, almost a contemporary Bachianas Brasileiras (to borrow Villa-Lobos' term) and a considerable feat of ...
