Too many artists go their entire careers without recording a live album; thankfully, Ivan Lins wasn't one of them. Recorded in September 1997, Live at MCG finds the Brazilian pop-jazz star performing at the Manchester Craftsmen Guild, a 350-seat venue in Pittsburgh. Lins, who was in his early 50s when this CD was recorded, is in excellent form on such caressing gems as "Noturna," "Comecar de Novo," "Aparecida" and "Anjo de Mim," and he has sensitive, sympathetic accompaniment in guitarist Jose Carlos Santos, bassist Dimerval Silva, keyboardist Marco Brito, drummer Teo Lima and percussionist Jaguaraci Machado. Most of Lins' vocals are in Portuguese, though he switches to English for a soulful reading of his signature song "Love Dance" -- a standard that has been recorded by everyone from Sarah Vaughan and George Benson, to Diane Shurre and Jack Jones. This is a CD that lovers of soft Rio de Janeiro-style pop-jazz shouldn't miss. ~ Alex HendersonCMJ (5/10/99, p.31) - "...This album was recorded live with the cream of the current Brazilian music scene. Some may find the sound slightly pop, but listen deeper to hear the Brazilian roots shining through like beams of sunshine." Ivan Lins Live At MCG Songs Live At MCG Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) A very nice CD. I love his music. It is so moving if you understand Portuguese. The arrangements are brilliant, as well.

"stunning, magical, my first full Ivan Lins experience ... I bought this CD on a visit to Brasil, and when I returned home to the UK, I couldn't stop playing it. What a stunning performance. Many of the songs were new to me, but it was clear from the live audience which numbers were all-time favourites. Ivan Lins' voice is indescribably moving at times, so pure with emotion and touching tenderness, then equally dramatic on the louder numbers. "Ango de mim" is just beautiful, the melody and lyrics of "Love Dance" give me goose-bumps. The all-star band gives excellent support, a live performance where I really felt I was there. Thank you, Ivan. Still waiting for him to come to UK. Submitted by Liz (Sheringham, Norfolk, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Live At MCG CD music
$14.65 Endless Is Love represents a return to form for Jon Lucien after two hit-or-miss efforts by Mercury to turn him into an R&B singer. Lucien's milieu is more jazz-influenced, and he's right at home in musical settings with Chuck Loeb and John Lee, as well as with a few of his own producers. His deep baritone works best when singing romantic songs, of which there are plenty here, and the arrangements combine R&B, jazz and world music. The disc is dedicated to his daughter Dalila, who perished in the TWA Flight 800 crash in 1996. Lucien deserves to be rediscovered by ...
| | Diana Darby Naked Time CDs (2000)
Live At MCG music CDs
$12.15 Diana Darby's debut came out of left field to handily outshine (at least aesthetically) much of the contemporaneous alt country crowd. Thanks to a keen production sense and sheer songcraft, she's able to wring both substance and resonance out of the postmodern-gothic Americana sounds at which so many lesser acts strive. Her voice is clear and unaffected, and unselfconsciously derivative of Appalachian high-lonesome singers.
Darby's songs combine simple folk-country structures with a touch of subtle pop-rock sensibility, and just the right amount of poetic lyricism, in a manner that would do Townes Van Zandt proud. The icing on the cake is the late-night desert landscape summoned up by the darkly evocative arrangements. Atmospheric guitar backdrops sprawl lazily beneath the songs, generating a sinister undercurrent that recalls vintage American Music Club. The darkness of mood is fairly unrelenting on NAKED TIME, but that's never stood in the way of great art before.
A pomegranate lies dissected on the cover, juice like blood and over a year in Hades worth of seeds spill forth. Listening to this record you have to assume that Diana succumbed just as Persephone did. How else could someone sing "whoever told you life was fair never spent much time sitting in the electric chair" with a laconic huskiness over a gentle pedal steel? Right from the start there is a darkness that even the jangling wind-chimes can't mask. Junebug broods like the oppressively hot Georgian day it portrays. There seems to be something sinister lurking in every corner, where even the Sweet Conversation is "wearing us down to the bone." This is a seriously shadowy album, I mean even 16 Horsepower are known to be lighter. It's like watching an accident, you want to turn away but are drawn in. I'm not trying to put you off, just warn you, I mean I like it, but those of a nervous disposition might want to tread carefully. The playing is first class, subtle and unobtrusive, fitting in with Diana's voice, which is mostly delivered in a slightly sinister hushed croon. This makes it all the more creepy, we're clearly not dealing with a bunch of hicks here. Tales of adult abuse and childhood trauma abound, from the gentle Black Dog - "daddy left you as a baby, no one thought it'd make you crazy" to the rock-out of She Won't Be Quiet - "daddy's little girl has finally come into her own," making you glad you didn't grow up in her home town. The final song gives a nod to what, surely, is a big influence, for Amelia brings laughing Lenny's Suzanne to mind, but even Mr. Cohen would baulk at a line like "the voice that guides your conscience ...
