BEHIND THE BRIDGE is an enhanced CD containing both a full audio program and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Andy Narell (steel pans); Dario Eskenazi (piano); Kleber Jorge (guitar, cavaquinho); Steve Erquiaga (guitar); Paul Van Wageningen (drums); Paulinho Da Costa, Luis Conte (percussion). Recorded at Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Combining jazz and world music was nothing new in the 1990s; Jelly Roll Morton had done exactly that in the 1920s with what he termed "the Spanish tinge." Nonetheless, world music was something that still had great creative possibilities for jazzmen, and one innovator demonstrating such possibilities was Andy Narell. Having recorded two excellent projects with the adventurous Caribbean Jazz Project in the 1990s, the steel pan player linked jazz with the music of Trinidad, Cuba, and Brazil on the superb Behind the Bridge (his ninth album as a leader). Only one of the songs, the haunting "Sea of Stories," is a Narell original; the rest of the CD finds him interpreting songs by composers from Cuba (including Ernesto Lecuona's "Al Fin Te Vi" and Chucho Valdés' "Claudia") and Brazilian gems like Ivan Lins' "Madalena" and Pixinguinha's "Lamentos." Bridge is unorthodox in a number of ways. First, steel pans have seldom been used as a jazz instrument. And second, they have rarely been used to play Brazilian and Cuban songs. At a time when jazz was often accused of having lost its innovative spirit, Narell was still proving himself to be a very imaginative risk-taker. ~ Alex Henderson

Behind The Bridge
$11.35 Personnel: George Benson (vocals, electric guitar); Chyna, Nakiea (vocals); Joshua Thompson (acoustic guitar, keyboards, synthesizer, bass instrument, programming); Rex Rideout (keyboards, programming); Herman Jackson, Bobby Douglas (keyboards); Richard Bona (bass instrument, background vocals); Roberto Vally (bass instrument); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion). A few decades ago, when the release of a George Benson album was an event for either jazz guitar or R&B vocal enthusiasts, his projects indeed lived up to the album title he employs here. While the new collection probably won't be an essential part of the Benson enthusiast's library, it's fun to see him trying to stay in the post-millennial urban groove hip with some of the younger generation's top songwriter/producers like Joshua Thompson (who's produced for O-Town, Aretha Franklin, and Babyface) and Joe. Those who ...

| | Dianne Reeves Little Moonlight CD (2003)
Behind The Bridge
$12.45 Personnel: Dianne Reeves (vocals); Nicholas Payton (trumpet); Peter Martin (piano); Romero Lubambo (guitar); Reuben Rogers (bass); Greg Hutchinson (drums). Recorded in December 2002. A LITTLE MOONLIGHT won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Personnel: Dianne Reeves (vocals); Romero Lubambo (guitar); Nicholas Payton (trumpet); Peter Martin (piano); Gregory Hutchinson (drums). Recording information: Right Track Studios (12/04/2002-12/10/2002). Photographer: Clay McBride. Arrangers: Peter Martin ; Romero Lubambo; Billy Childs Trio. With the meteoric success of Norah Jones' debut in the early 2000s, the message was clear: there's a real hunger for straightforward tunes with minimal froufrou. Jones' producer, Arif Mardin, has assembled another likely hit with A Little Moonlight, a collection of appealing standards. Empathically supported by Dianne Reeves' working trio, every track showcases her exceptionally rich and lovely instrument. Although longterm fans may consider her a bit subdued, her soulfulness is very much in evidence, and her voice, as always, goes down like mulled wine. There are samples of her trademark whimsical scatting, especially on the charming opener, "Loads of ...
