| | Oval Dok CD Oval Discography of CDs
Oval was originally a trio concern, but the fourth Oval album finds the project solely in the hands of founder Markus Popp. DOK also sees Popp abandoning his trademark fascination with damaged CDs and instead focusing his unique digital reconstructive processes on a more limiting sound source. For DOK, a collaborative effort with Tokyo-based sound collector (and occasional labelmate) Christophe Charles, Popp procured samples from Charles' extensive archives of bell recordings. Popp fed these sounds, along with his own environmental recordings and minimal bass tones, through Oval's central software-run engine. The result is a work that is noticeably different from earlier Oval albums in feel yet every bit as extraordinary.
On "Polygon Medpack," Popp draws a scrim of naturalistic calm-- windswept and strewn with the digitized twitter of imaginary birds--from and around Charles' tolling bells. The rippling chromatic moire of "Reversioning" or "Vitra Desk" counterbalances the gently ruffled ambience of "Dekon/Rekon Anything" and "Momentan VR." Compared with the immediate musical charms of SYSTEMISCH and 94DISKONT, DOK's thinner melodic currents and denser atmospheres might seem a little unsatisfying. But this is some of Popp's most remarkable handiwork--a tapestry of tiny sounds and gorgeous details that rewards attentive listening.

Dok album
$11.29 DIG YOUR OWN HOLE was nominated for 1998 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album and Best Alternative Music Performance. "Block Rockin' Beats" won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
Chemical Brothers Ed Simons and Tom Rowlands waste no time on their nuclear-weapon of a second album proving they are masters of the techno groove. DIG YOUR OWN HOLE opens with a sampled shout-out by old-school gangsta Schoolly D, a syncopated bass line, and a drum loop that gives credence to the song's title, "Block Rockin' Beats." This smorgasbord of sounds--a hallucinatory interweaving of hip-hop, techno, trance and the Chemicals' trademark synthesized guitar loop--builds up and cold-rocks the first five minutes of the record like a tsunami crashing ashore. Unlike most productions in the electronic/dance-music universe, the music on DIG YOUR OWN HOLE also has the weight of great rock and roll. That makes DIG YOUR OWN HOLE the personification of modern pop music at its chaotic best, and a funky agent of change.
DIG YOUR OWN HOLE is built on a repetition of beats, samples and skewered sounds, but that doesn't mean it's a repetitive album. Between bass-heavy house tunes like "It Doesn't Matter" and "Elektro Bank," the Chemicals show where their pop-oriented interests lie--in tradition. Whether butting heads ...

$9.95 Compassion is a totally unique album by Coyote Oldman. Michael Graham Allen and Barry Stramp have always maintained that their soundscapes were holistically influenced by all native cultures rather than just by Native American culture. This disc, while certainly influenced by Native American heritage, features overt references to other cultures. It also has unique sounds. Allen developed experimental bass flutes and double flutes for this project. He also performs on a pre-Columbian clay flute that is over 100 years old. Hui Cheng of the Mainland China National Opera is a guest vocalist. Her wordless chants are ...
| | Fernanda Porto CD (2004)
Dok album
$20.39 Debut CD from Brazilian singer/songwriter. A great part of the song structures were recorded live by Porto, guitarist Ulisses Rocha and percussionist Marcio Forte, with some overdubs done later. Also featured on the album are bassist Doug Wimbish and drummer Will Calhoun of Living Colour.
Mixing drum'n'bass with bossa nova and MPB, Fernanda Porto presents a very consistent and impressive work on her debut album. Thirteen of the 14 tracks are original compositions by Porto herself, with the only exception being the bossa nova classic "Só Tinha que Ser Com Você" by Tom Jobim. The bossa nova influence is apparent on most of the record, including the opening track "De Costas pro Mundo." There is also a general tone and air ...

$17.09 On "Yonder the Big Blue Holler" Todd Mack brings to the table 10 new ditties packed with grit and twang. His fifth release since his 1989 self-titled debut, "Yonder the Big Blue Holler" is his most cohesive effort to date and features the talents of some 25 musical guests. There are 8 originals on the disc showcasing Mack's strong writing skills, as well as a cover of the little-known traditional number, "Five Nights Drunk", and the obscure Traveling Wilburys song, "Poor House". As co-owner of the Off the Beat-n-Track recording studio in western Massachusetts, Mack has honed his production skills to a fine art form, and nowhere is this more evident than on his new record. He has traveled ...
