| | MARRS Pump Up The Volume CD Single MARRS Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Though label affiliates pressed for more, the only release by M/A/R/R/S was this 1987 single, an early hip-hop/dance crossover hit that doesn't seem as surprising in hindsight but still hasn't lost its edge. Four mixes of the title track are included, plus a bonus AR Kane B-side, "Anitina." ~ John Bush

Pump Up The Volume
$5.85 Photographer: Russell Young. It's really a one-minute joke, but it's possible to be affectionate about this record. Beset by legal hassles over a James Brown sample, the Justified Ancients of Muu-Muu (the JAMMS) created this record, following it by morphing into their ongoing identity as the KLF. It's really nothing more than "Rock and Roll, Part Two" merged with the Doctor Who theme music and some samples of Daleks yelling "Exterminate!," but it's a hoot. Various versions exist, a couple of them featuring yells and howls from Gary Glitter. A comment on one of the 12" versions notes, "Probably the most nauseating record in the world." Nah, not really. ~ Steven McDonald
| | Inc Lipps Funkyworld: The Best Of Lipps, Inc. CD (1992)
Pump Up The Volume
$7.79 Lipps, Inc. includes: Cynthia Johnson (vocals); Steve Greenberg (various instruments). Includes liner notes by Martin Keller. All tracks have been digitally remastered from the original master tapes. Generally perceived as a one-hit wonder group, this compilation culls the strongest compositions from Lipps Inc.'s entire output of three releases. While one can instantly raise an eyebrow as to the validity of these songs being perceived as hits, there are some admittedly strong cuts that would appease even the stiffest of critics. Production foreshadowing both ...

Pump Up The Volume
$6.09 Live Recording
Tom Tom Club: Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, Steven Stanley, Benjamin Arbrister, Adrian Belew, Loric Weymouth, Laura Weymouth, Monte Brown, Tyrone Dowrie, James Rizzi, Kendall Stubbs, Lani Weymouth. Producers: Steven Stanley, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz. Following the release of the Talking Heads' fourth album, REMAIN IN LIGHT, the band's husband-and-wife rhythm section, drummer Chris Frantz and bassist Tina Weymouth, opted to record tracks in the Caribbean on the invitation of Islands Records founder Chris Blackwell, thus the Tom Tom Club was born. Joined by Talking Heads touring guitarist Adrian Belew, guitarist Monte Brown, percussionist Steven Stanley, and Weymouth's sisters, Laura and Lani, on background vocals, Frantz and Weymouth crafted a highly rhythmic, groove-laden album that incorporated world music (most obviously on the buoyant, African-tinged "L'Elephant") and hip-hop (the playful "Wordy Rappinghood," a kindred spirit to Blondie's "Rapture"). Of course, the 1981 album's most shining moment proved to be the hit single, "Genius of Love," a vibrant dance-floor classic that has been sampled ad infinitum. Issued the same year as David Byrne and Brian Eno's MY LIFE IN THE BUSH OF GHOSTS, TOM TOM CLUB was the fun and free-spirited counterpart to that experimental and cerebral outing, revealing that the Taking Heads could making fascinating music even when fragmented. "Who needs to think when your feet just go?" So sings Tina Weymouth on Tom Tom Club's debut album. And rightly so -- this was the sunny break in the islands that the rhythm section of Talking Heads wanted, and they got ...
| | Alphaville Singles Collection CD (1988)
Pump Up The Volume
$10.35 Alphaville: Marian Gold, Bernhard Lloyd, Ricky Echolette. Additional personnel: Phil Palmer, Jimmy Ripp (guitar); Phil Todd (saxophone); Guy Barker, Stuart Brooks (trumpet); Neil Sidwell (trombone); Wolgang Loos (keyboards, programming); Dave Lebold, Robin Smith (keyboards); Ken Taylor, Andy Brown (bass); Curt Cress, Roger Linn (drums); Frank Rigotti, Jimmy Maelen (percussion); Gulf Stream, The Rosie Singers, Judy Cheeks, Victoria Miles, Wednesday, Michael Barbiero (background vocals). Producers include: Colin Pearson, Wolfgang Loos, Peter Walsh, Andreas Budde, Steve Thompson. Engineers include: Wolfgang Loos, Stephen Chase, Steve Thompson. Recorded at Studio 54, Berlin, Germany in 1984; Weryton Studio, Munich, Germany; The Manor, Oxford, England; Media Sound Studios, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Sean Ross and Yvonne Olsen. Saying that the band could have been served better with this compilation is putting it mildly -- then again, considering that the group had only released two albums and four singles before this appeared, arguably not much more could be done. Whatever the rationale behind the release, Collection consists merely of those four singles -- "Forever Young" and "Big in Japan" from Forever Young, and "Red Rose" and "Dance With Me" from Afternoons in Utopia -- each included in two versions, one short and one long, some new and some old. As a sampling of Alphaville at its best, it's successful if obviously repetitive. Some of the revampings are actually quite fantastic -- the ...
| | Duran Duran Singles 81-85 CDs (2003) Box Set
Pump Up The Volume
$33.85 Duran Duran: Simon LeBon, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, Roger Taylor, Andy Taylor. Producers include: Colin Thurston, Ian Little, Duran Duran, Alex Sadkin, Nile Rogers. Compilation producers: Nigel Reeve, Jo Brooks. Here's something no Durannie can live without. A 13-disc box set containing replications of each of Duran Duran's most significant singles released between 1981 and 1985, The Singles 81-85 is a package that -- much like the band itself, as many of the haters would argue -- is most practical as something to look at. The very idea of swapping discs out of the player after every two of three songs seems like a cumbersome one, especially since most of the B-sides function as little more than curiosities. Still, there's plenty for the old fanatics to reminisce over, from the often superior "Night Version" remixes, to the endearingly silly acoustic version of "The Chauffeur," to scarce tracks like "Khanada," "Faster Than Light," and "Sekret October." Even if this serves no purpose to you whatsoever, it's at the very least fascinating to flip through the sleeves and watch ...
