The Birthday Party's LIVE 1981-82 is a vicious and incendiary assault on the nature of traditional both rock music and its various offspring. Words like "intense" are consistently overused when describing rock bands, but the Birthday Party worked overtime to make sure that they fully deserved them.
Digitally remastered by Dave Macquarie (1999, Studios 301).
Recorded at three European concerts-- in London, in Bremen, and in Athens--this album displays a rock band caught in the act of simultaneous exorcism and self-destruction. Standouts include a high-speed swipe at "A Dead Song" that outstrips the studio version in nearly every respect; the tricked-out rockabilly of "Release the Bats," a song which probably did more for the then nascent Goth movement than anything since Bauhaus' "Bela Lugosi's Dead"; "Dead Joe," built on searing guitar feedback and accelerated drumming from Phil Calvert; and an eight-and-a-half minute cover of the Stooges "Funhouse," featuring each member of the band apparently attempting to perform head-on musical collisions with Tracy Pew's bass guitar line, otherwise the only thing keeping the song in line. LIVE 1981-82 is a worthy addition to the Birthday Party's influential legacy.

Alternative Press (11/99, p.88) - 4 out of 5 - "...a testament to the expatriate Australian quintet's frenzied and parched form of desert jazz and drunken lounge music....exemplifies the band's love of the sound of malfunction..." The Wire (7/99, p.52) - "...[In] the volume and presence of these recordings...familiar songs are bruised, blackened and distended to the point where they split open....the songs emerge raw, livid and schockingly tender..." Live 1981-82 CD music
$7.69 Originally released as two separate LPs: MUTINY/THE BAD SEED.
Originally released as two separate albums, this repackaging perfectly defines the transcendent ethos of Australia's premier crash and burn poets of noise. Fronted by a young, fierce Nick Cave, long before his days as a refined gothic balladeer, The Birthday Party plays savage, chaotic music ...
| | Birthday Party Junkyard CD (1982) Remastered
Live 1981-82 music CDs
$7.59 This is the Birthday Party's second official album (their first, Australian-only, release was put out under both the Birthday Party moniker and their old name Boys Next Door). The unbridled fury of JUNKYARD's predecessor PRAYERS ON FIRE is subdued here, but the guitars' sinister scrape and whine and Nick Cave's demon-possessed, beat-poet vocals create a deliciously unnerving din nevertheless.
"Big ...

Live 1981-82 album
$12.05 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, ...

Live 1981-82 songs
$17.09 BLACK ORPHEUS is a 2003 release by blues and R&B guitarist Keziah Jones.
Calling Keziah Jones idiosyncratic sorta belabors the obvious, so it should come as no surprise that the opener, "Afrosurrealism for the Ladies," rolls in with a prominent part for...yeah, you got it, bass clarinet. But the music on Jones' discs has shown a downward trend in cohesion, and the Nigerian-born songwriter/guitarist's first disc ...
